I will never understand "the dress," even though here it is, clear as can be....

Well on the yellow dress side, it is in the box, which darkens everything. Then on the blue dress side, it is within the box that lightens everything up. The shaded boxes are the difference maker.

That piece is big enough that if I focus on it I still see black and blue when it moves, just a subdued hue of them.

Watched the scishow video on this yesterday actually. While the effect here has more to do with the implied shadowing created by the rectangles and the way our brains interpret that, one theory of the original picture is that the difference comes from being night owls and early risers and how they interpret vague information like the picture in terms of shadows. As a night owl, I fit the profile because I saw black and blue.

It may be that no two people see color in exactly the same way. They obviously would have to be close since we all operate in much the same environment, but, as with all things mental, there can be great variations as well.

For example, red to one person might be blue to another if they could see how each other's brains are interpreting the sensory inputs through their eyes. Maybe there'll someday be a machine that can show how our brains interpret the world.
