What in the hell happened to them?

From after WWII till Ronald Reagan election in 1980 they were everywhere you travelled. Peanut brittle was a must get when you got gas.

Reverends are not Catholics and only Catholics drink the good stuff. Protestants - at least where I have sampled the wares - seem to drink grape juice or no booze wine.

Stucky's had free standing store with lots of candy but they were famous for their peanut brittle that came in big flat sheets. Once back in the car you broke off pieces to keep the kids occupied. Came in a big Stucky's box that looked more like a candy box.

Ha Ha, very familiar with it and was about to post it to you!

Until about the 1980's you could get real good sausage there.

They also had the hook up to a certain winery but I was never a wine drinker.

Don't know about lately but is was good place to do a retreat.

Ha- cool you knew what I meant.

It was probably Wiedekehr's Wine or Post's- one of the two.

You forget I used to live in Arkansas and my great grandparents through the generation below mine were big fans of Hot Springs and Mountain Valley.

Yes I did forget that. I too love Hot Springs- one of my favorite getaways.

We sold the place there a few years ago as none of the younger generations have the same feelings for HS we did. Now they want to be in places like NYC and LA.

Yes, you would be correct about the wines. Are they both still in business? Nice families but who knows if kids want to take over family business any more.

Yes, both still in business. I'm distantly related to the Post's.

Which is the Subi connection. I think all the kids went there. Very pretty part of the state. My distant memory probably intersects with your older distant relatives. Same faith as the cousins? I remember the Retreat House on the side of the hill overlooking the fields below. I think the priest at the white church in HS was cousins to some of the monks.

Yes, same faith. And yes, it's beautiful there- love just a lazy Sunday drive up that way.

My grandparents sent my dad's brother there. My dad was the baby and he graduated (not from Subi) in '58 so maybe early 50's uncle was there. Funny stories about him hitchhiking home and beating his parents back from dropping him off because they'd stop along the way for dinner at some relatives in Atkins.

I could possibly be related to the priest/monks too- I had a few on my dad's side and a monk on my mom's and further on down the line a priest on that side too.

Lord, seems ages since I was in Atkins last. Had some friends over in Dardanelle and we use to set lines for catfish over in that lake. Good times and very good people.

If you are German / Irish / Italian and like to drink, odds are good for that era to find a monk similarly inclined and possibly related.

I liked the view from the Retreat House and really liked the Angel Walk if you know where that is. They broke off from the Abbey in Indiana but had very different interpretations of St Benedicts rules. The one in IN was not good about travelers interacting with the monks but the one in AR was very open and encouraging about it. Did you ever go to St Peters chair?

It blows my mind tho to see how big it is and think how much bigger it would have been without the fire in the 1920's. I saw some old drawings in their library.
