Favorite John Carpenter movie?

I've been watching quite a few of Carpenter's movies recently, and Ive realized hes made quite a few good ones.
He didn't stick solely to one genre in doing it. He pretty much established the slasher film as a mainstay of the horror genre as opposed to just indi movies (Halloween), he made successful action movies (Escape from New York and LA), made arguably the greatest remake of all time (The Thing), and even branched out into some comedy (Memoirs of an invisible man).
I can honestly say Ive only ever seen one bad movie that he made, and it was The Ward (this was the last one he directed)
So if you have a favorite movie of his, what is it?
>inb4 Pio says who is Carpenter
Pio's favorite is The Ward guaranteed.
For me, its probably They Live. Watching a guy discover the deck is stacked against him and turning the table over after all the bs is somethin special. Theres political commentary in it, but it blends well with the story.

Tied between The Thing and Escape from New York.
Both great flicks.

Only a few horror movies have ever gotten to me. The Thing remake in 1982 is one of them. It’s far better than the original and that abomination from 2011.
I rank it at the top of my list of favorite horror movies along with Alien, Aliens and Predator.

Escape from NY is great. Russell is fantastic as Snake obviously, but the other actors, like Lee Van Cleef Donald Pleasance and Isaac Hayes really bring the film together.
Also had a great soundtrack LINK

I find it hard to believe you don't know who. But if you really don't, and you've never seen any of his movies, watch one. Seriously, most of the ones he's done are good. Even Assault on Precinct 13 aint bad and The Fog is a good little horror movie.
And if you've ever played Metal Gear Solid, Solid Snake is very much based off of Snake Plissken. Again I find it hard to believe you don't know this stuff "Pio".

Ive never seen all of the original (saw the very end as a kid on tv) but I have seen the prequel and Carpenter's is indeed significantly better.
If you have not heard, some studio has announced they are gonna do another remake. I don't see how the one from the 80s can be topped and it will likely blow up in their face.
A lot of little details in the movie. Like for instance who tampered with the blood for the serum test? If you listen carefully, when Windows comes into the room and finds Bennings getting assimilated, you can hear him drop a set of keys on the floor, possibly the ones to the blood. I really love it just for how many questions your left with and can answer by rewatching again and again. Is Childs a thing? Is his coat a different color or is it the lighting as well as snow and ash on it?

All of his movies with Kurt Russell are great but I'd have to give the nod to The Thing as John Carpenter's best movie of his career. I'd also say it was Kurt Russell's best performance in a movie and that covers a lot of ground.
One of his movies that doesn't get the love it deserves is Prince of Darkness. The concept is a bit goofy but by God Carpenter pulls it off with great cinematography and music.

As a kid I used to love Ghosts of Mars.
Now I'm googling it and seeing it got some pretty shitty ratings. Do people not appreciate Ice Cube as a leading man or something?

Interesting story behind Big Trouble in Little China, originally it was supposed to be 20th Century Fox's Indiana Jones. It was to be set in the old west and Jack Burton's horse was to be stolen, this was later changed to modern day and a semi.
The studio though, expecting Jack Burton to be Indiana Jones, were angry when he turned out to be more of goofy character. So they made Carpenter add the scene at the beginning where the tour guide says that Burton saved the people of China town.

Prince of Darkness is underrated. Religion meets quantum physics is a weird idea but yeah Carpenter pulled it off LINK .
Saw the movie a few months ago and was pleasantly surprised by it. He made it on a 3 million dollar budget to try and mitigate studio interference, pretty impressive what he pulled off with it.

Yeah I like the Thing.
Only other remake I can think of that comes close to its level of quality is the Body Snatchers remake in the 70s with Donald Southerland

Ive never seen Ghosts of Mars.
It may be fun and a bit over the top and people criticize it for that just as they criticize escape from LA for the same thing.
Rumor is it was supposed to be the third Escape movie originally, entitled Escape from Earth, don't know if that's true though.

You are, for whatever reason, evidently the only person I can now upvote. So I sent one your way sir.
If we had the place to do it we should set up a John Carpenter watch along. Or a Kurt Russell watch along for that matter.

Oddly enough you remain the only person I can upvote. Which is weird on many levels.
Yeah. I know. Hypothetically it would be great to get a crew together online and watch "Big Trouble in Little China" but frankly I feel satisfied when I can access my email these days.
