Here's the thing: Let's pretend for second that the verse in question is talking about worldly possessions. If the blessing of The Lord brings you wealth, then it's a sin not to share that wealth with the poor until all you have is shelter, clothing, and your daily bread.

I agree with you. I've found 2 verses that do't specifically mention money, and a number of them that specifically refer to the rich.

It's definitely a sin to be rich.

You're depending on a translator in this case.

"Rich" is an English word. What was the original Greek word used and what did it really mean in light of the scripture?

Do you use the bible solely for arguments or does it mean something to you?

I believe Mammon was the Aramaic word for money in this verse from Matthew:

quote:

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also… No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money.” (Matt 6:19-21, 24)

You're implying that a rich man automatically serves money. God may bless a man with money because of his fervent devotion (Job).

Psalm 112:1-5

Praise the Lord! Blessed is the man who fears the Lord, who greatly delights in his commandments! His offspring will be mighty in the land; the generation of the upright will be blessed. Wealth and riches are in his house, and his righteousness endures forever. Light dawns in the darkness for the upright; he is gracious, merciful, and righteous. It is well with the man who deals generously and lends; who conducts his affairs with justice.

1 Timothy 6:6-10

Now there is great gain in godliness with contentment, for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world. But if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content. But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.

He may very well do that. But if the man doesn't share his wealth then that's a sin.

If he shares all of his wealth then he's no longer rich. Therefore a rich man can't be a Christian.

Mark 12:41-44

And he sat down opposite the treasury and watched the people putting money into the offering box. Many rich people put in large sums. And a poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which make a penny. And he called his disciples to him and said to them, “Truly, I say to you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the offering box. For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on.”

this is the strongest one

quote:

James 5:1-6

Come now, you rich, weep and howl for the miseries that are coming upon you. Your riches have rotted and your garments are moth-eaten. Your gold and silver have corroded, and their corrosion will be evidence against you and will eat your flesh like fire. You have laid up treasure in the last days. Behold, the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you kept back by fraud, are crying out against you, and the cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord of hosts. You have lived on the earth in luxury and in self-indulgence. You have fattened your hearts in a day of slaughter.

Those are all pretty damning. It's why I laugh when I see a wealthy televangelist that drives a Mercedes and lives in a million dollar home.

Essentially Capitalism goes against Christianity.

Pretty hypocritical.

Extremely. Right wing Christians are so anti-socialist, even though Jesus said we should all be equal when it comes to wealth.
