It baffles me how many idiots don't understand the basic logistics of a viral outbreak. You seriously think understaffed hospitals can handle everyone getting sick at the same time, regardless of severity?

If you want to do something other than engage in whataboutism, let me know. Comparisons to the flu are stupid. The simple fact is we don't know how this virus is going progress in the future. We also don't have a vaccine or a built-in immunity like with the flu.

Aw you poor baby. I hate to tell you this, but viruses don't give a shite about your politics. Something tells me you're more concerned about this impacting Trump's re-election than the potential major problems this could cause, or the people dying from it.

OK. I'm not going to mock you. I'm going to roll some things by you so you can consider them.
The reason the flu kills so many people each year is not because it is particularly virulent, the last really bad flu bug was in 1918... and it killed about 2% of the world's population. That is bad.
The flu kills so many people because it is already out there in the population. Its everywhere. The flu never goes away, it just mutates and comes back with a new strain.
The reason why we should be concerned about the coronavirus is that is particularly deadly and it is still spreading. Estimates are that about 126,000 people have it. The death total is 8,600 or so. That is a bit more than 3%.
You might not think so, but 3% is some scary shite. If you had a 3% chance of having your balls ripped off and eaten by a rabid bear you'd be all in favor of getting this rabid bear problem fixed.
It is a particular concern here because we don't have enough testing kits to test for it adequately. Places like Australia and South Korea have fairly low death rates from this because they churned out a ton of testing kits and tested everything that moved.
Italy, on the other hand, slashed funding for their hospitals in recent years and gutted their pandemic response capabilities. They are getting hammered right now. Considering that we slashed and burned CDC funding over the last few years and eliminated the NSC official who was supposed to over see pandemic response... this is a concern.
Am I saying panic? No. It will be a rough couple of months but we will get through this. That having been said you want to treat this like a serious problem so it won't turn into a serious problem.

This. As mentioned, the flu is endemic. We generally know how many people will get sick each year, and how to handle it. We have the beds for it. There is some basic immunity in the population.
Now, along comes a new pathogen. We know nothing about it. If it were to spread exponentially, we cannot handle the volume. Will stress the hell out of the healthcare system. Healthcare staff will have zero immunity and will also get sick further depleting the system.
As I heard on a podcast...I wonder if news came out that 35,000 people were going to be infected and die from Ebola how different their tune would be.
Someone pointed out that the mortality rate would be less than 1%. If true, it’s still magnitudes greater than the flu. Also, we have 2.8 beds for every 1 million people.
I pray all this goes away like the Orange man says, but I’m not counting on it.

Do you ?
The average death rate, calculated by dividing absolute number of infections by confirmed deaths, shows more people in Italy are dying of coronavirus than in the rest of the world. According to Italian health officials, the great majority of victims are elderly people. In fact, all those who died are above the age 60. And most of them had pre-existing health conditions, the official shave said.
Try not to panic !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well this is complete horseshite. I work in healthcare as a consultant. Wife works in an HCA hospital. They are all very nervous, particularly for their older patients.
2 of the infected in Nashville are physicians. That’s a problem.

Yes. 200 people dying a day. War time triage in effect. That’s very different than “the flu”.

Is it. Is it really different than the flu? 60,000 dead just in one tiny country called the United States during a 3 month period during the FLU season of 2017-2018.
Just because every single one of those deaths weren't announced on CNN, does it make them matter any less?
Just because every single, solitary flu infection/death wasn't tracked on multiple websites, papers, social media sites, etc... and announced to the nation as the coming apocalypse, does it make them any less important?
People that die from the flu are humans too.
