And they have all been a different virus. I have heard that for years. CDC will figure this out just do what they recommend

Yeah, so what?
They are far more likely to get this and also far more likely to die from this.

I guess I could put it this way...the news has been non stop doom and gloom for at least 2 weeks, but its been building up for 2 months. Besides a small sample of loud mouths on the internet, I cannot find anywhere in the general population (at work, at Home Depot, and the grocery store) that anyone cares enough about this to be utterly inconvenienced by cancelling basketball games and concerts - besides a rush on hand soap and chlorox (which they were basically told to do).
I got the flu 2 years in a row. It sucked, felt like shite for a few weeks, but I was back on it. I do not see anything about this that is that concerning. It is new stuff, we don't have a vaccine yet, but it will come.

It is a concern? It's one of the most devastating viruses that goes around yearly? We put tons of money into it each year to develop a shot. Thousands die from it each year with a shot, imagine how many if we didn't have one.
Also a big point of cocnern in regards to COVID-19 is that it is hitting during flu season and attacks the same group of people according to the CDC
Oh so you can point me to threads like this over the flu the past few years?
quote:
So whatever number you throw out in terms of flu deaths, roughly 90% of those were in old people. Now we have a new disease that may be even more deadly in old people circulating, and we don't have a vaccine for it. If I was an older person i would be extremely scared right now, especially given that COVID-19 is apparently extremely contagious.
I understand that you are probably not at risk, and I am happy about that. But it is important that we actually take a step back to think about how this may effect those that are at risk. Being hit double by the flu and COVID-19 could be devastating for older people.
This only a topic because people are making a huge deal out of it. I don't even know why really, but here we are.
Also, getting hit "double" isn't how it works. You can get 2 at the same time, but the symptoms don't combine or get twice as bad or whatever. Your body reacts the same way(aka the symptoms) either way. If 1 virus caused something that other didn't, then you get an extra symptom, but not "double".

So if I act like a Chicken Little in public and make a big deal about it while ignoring those things far more likely to cause them problems, they can be saved?

That’s a problem.

People did not do this. That's where a lot of the new cases came from.

What is your weird thing with calling people chicken little? I had forgotten about that movie yet you seem obsessed with it.
If you follow the recommendation of experts, you can help reduce the spread and potentially save lives of those in your community.
No politicians are experts, I don't care what their party is or what committee they sit on.

No because we have done basically all we can to mitigate the flu. Despite this, thousands still die yearly, as you pointed out.

I didn't mean someone would get both, but that older people have twice as much of a chance of contracting an illness that could kill them. Two diseases spreading is obviously more deadly than 1.

If you act like a reasonable and caring citizen, we can hopefully mitigate the storm that is brewing.

Two viruses spreading significantly increases risk of infection and load on our healthcare system, which is the BIGGEST concern of this outbreak.

We aren’t doing much to stop the spread. How is that a good thing?

Oh man, didn't even know they made it into a movie. Seen a couple of cartoons years ago.
But I say Chicken Little because that's what this is. Making a big deal out of nothing.

You’re exactly right. I mean I went out and bought Lysol wipes for all the classrooms in my school And told teachers to let me know when they run out. But we aren’t shutting down because of the TV or media wants us to freak out.

Research is still being done on producing an improved flu vaccine that doesn't require guesswork, so we still obviously think flu is a huge problem.

By doing what? Claiming it's a huge big deal when it's not?

It is a huge deal in China, Iran, and Italy. Do you think Americans are magically immune?
