Dr. Smith who won the Nobel Prize in chemistry. That’s pretty cool.

Congrats! The Nobel hard sciences... physics, chemistry, and medicine... are extremely boring and non-political.

Which means the people who won them actually won them. Literature and Peace are... well... more open to debate.

Consider that Obama and Teddy Roosevelt have won the Peace prize. Obama for being the first African American President. Which, you will note, did not bring a great deal of peace along with him.

Teddy won for... he helped to negotiate an end to the Russian/Japan war. But he just loved war and killing things. Him winning an award for peace is like Hugh Hefner winning an award for chastity.

Winning the Nobel for Chemistry means you actually are one of the greatest Chemists to ever live. Missouri should be proud.

Good on Mizzou’s Dr. Smith.

This achievement points up the view that life is but an extremely complicated chemical chain reaction that has been ongoing for 3.5+ billion years. To put this into perspective, chemical evolution is apparently distinguished from biological evolution.

I don’t know why that is. I can’t understand why so many people, including a lot of scientists, think of life as an almost magical occurrence. Maybe the study of chemical evolution and its many benefits to humans will help demystify the origins of life.
