Confucius explained that laws fall short of bettering society. People follow laws because, if they don't, they get punished. That does not make them better people.
On the other hand, Confucius taught, trying to be better people makes better people. If it's legally allowed to engage in activities that harm other people, good people choose to do no harm, or good people regret that they did harm before and vow to not do it again.
Something like that. Confucius recognized the existence of goodness. Good versus evil.
He would have loved to read Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis

I'm also pretty sure Confucius advocated not obsessing and dwelling on your mistakes.
