I’ve heard of them before but just never used one and wanted to know what they were for.
Other than protecting you what else can you use for?
So are there VPNs out there to make me think I’m in a different state? Like I want it to think I’m in NJ

Yes and no. All depends on where the VPN is. I'm sure there is one in NJ but theres tons of them all over the world. I am using Mexico City, Seoul and Zurich right now.
Also, it confuses the frick out of targeting ads

I use one for work. Certain jobs on the internet are limited to people from certain countries. So I just have my VPN route me through that country and viola.
So if I find a job (though gig might be more appropriate since these are you do something, get paid, and then never hear from these folks again) but its limited to people from Scotland as an example, I just change my location to Scotland. Usually its for surveys and the like.
Its a way to hustle for money for me. I suppose other folks use it for other reasons but to be honest when I am done with the work day I switch my VPN off and watch Netflix like the rest of us. If I didn't have my inner ear problem that makes holding a regular job impossible I'd never use a VPN.

Everything is blocked at work by my firm, don’t think they’d allow me to even get to a VPN.(how are investment banks with VPNs?)
I’d just want one for my phone so they can make it say I’m in NJ and I can use the Sportsbook app

I have one through AVG. It's nothing special but it's free and I get decent speed still when torrenting.
