What was the experience like. Someone I know passed my name to one and I don't know what to expect.

They'll call you in to fill out a bunch of paperwork, have a brief interview confirming your work history, what you're looking for, what you're not interested in, etc. Then they'll call you when they have a position that they think matches your skills and experience. If it interests you, they set up the interview.
I've worked with a couple in the past. One was really good and worked hard at placing me somewhere. The other was worthless and a waste of my time.

Many times. Some good some not so good. Depends on your line of work but those that are industry focused have been better to work with IMO. Also keep in mind they are basically sales people. They need to have a referral hired to get paid in most instances. Also when talking salary I never tell them what I make but what I'd have to take to leave.

Every job change I've had.
Don't believe third party recruiters are working solely on your behalf. If you know this, it can be a good experience.
Last recruiter I used doubled my pay.

Had some experience with IT recruiters a few years ago.
I work in a technology niche, and the local recruiters didn't know how to handle that. They were trying to put me into anything that came along to make money for themselves.
My info got into the hands of at least one outfit run by Indians (red dot, non-casino owning variety) and that turned into a circus. They share info among Indian-owned recruiting firms nationwide, and there are a ton of them. I was getting calls from people I didn't know or understand multiple times a day.

I've had head hunters come after me but I've never used a recruiter to fill a position.

As many have said - it can be good and it can be bad. Some recruiters will take time and really figure out what you want to do. Some will try and pigeon hole you in to something that will make them the quickest bonus.
