If you are eliminating asian manufacturers, then I have nothing to offer but domestic crap. Best of luck.

Hyundai and Kia are virtually the same company. Kia used to be absolute shite, but they are actually making pretty good cars now. Their reputation just hasn't caught up to their quality yet. I know the OP said no Japanese, but you really should check out the new Mazda6 and Mazda3. They're VERY nice cars. A well-equipped 6 will run 25K NEW and the 3 will be a few grand less. The gas mileage kicks arse.

Some people have suggested Kia but no one can tell me what the maintenance is like on them.

Bought my daughter a new KIA Rio in 2008 as car for her to take to college. Been a great car. No trouble whatsoever. She still drives it now even after graduating because she likes it and its paid for.

VW Passat the Wolfsburg Edition is only around 24k new and they are high quality long lasting cars

Fuuuucckk that. Worst car I ever ever owned was a Passat. Had an electrical problem almost no mechanic could figure out. Would be fine for months then mysteriously not start. I had all kinds of things replaced or serviced throughout the car.

Probably just my situation, but I found servicing those cars and maintenance on them sucked. Will never buy another one.

Have several family members with them and not one problem and 2 of them are well over 100k in mileage.

I've got a 2004 with 165K replacing this year, maintenance has been very reasonable, no major breakdowns or replacement parts, AC just keeps on chugging. 20 miles to gal.

Go look at a low mileage Toyota Camry. I'm not sure if camrys come with a 4 cyl or V6 option but get the V6 regardless.

You're right. In that case...

Seriously though, there is no comparison between the two. I thought the Ford Fusion was descent. It's a piece of shite.

You can get a late model used Kia Sorento in that price range, easily. You may not want an SUV, but we love this auto. In fact, after my wife got a 2011 I ended up buying one for myself two years later. I always drove sedans, but now love sitting up higher than what I'd been used to. I'll have trouble going back to that if I ever need to.
