I imagine ppl who attend AA meetings would strongly disagree with you. It's not a subject to joke about.
As one of those people, I'd say the difference is that an AA clubhouse is the place to talk about sobriety and the challenges we face in maintaining it. Even there, the conversation should be centered around how we have managed to stay sober. Bragging is frowned upon, even in AA. No one likes a holier than thou prick.
It's part of my life, sure. But it's not who I am and I don't brag about it, per se. In fact, I generally don't talk about it unless in a meeting or unless someone else brings it up.
Hope that helps...

Some geezer ex-hippie musician brags about how many years they've been sober.
I think the OP is being dishonest in describing them as bragging.

Stevie Ray Vaughn's brother at last year's Rock n Roll hall of fame sounded like he was bragging to me.

How do you have enough time to become extremely bored with a 10 second mention of sobriety?

Exactly!!!! Personally hope the OP doesn't ever need "our" help but if he/she does I will be there like others were there for me. Yo OP 6 years but will pick up my 7 year in December so KMA2!

I actually think it's commendable when someone brings up how they've beaten their addiction, so, no.

I don't hang out with quitters

I have been sober for 8 months. I have also been on probation for 8 months.
I can assure everyone this is purely coincidental.

I'm sitting in an old timers meeting at an AA convention right now listening to people with 25+ years speak and I don't feel they are bragging in the least.

Come on over I'll buy ya one or two, just because I don't drink any longer doesn't mean I can't have fun.

No kidding, I have a couple friends/clients that I work with almost daily/hang out with on the weekends. After a year or so we were all out at dinner after work and one of them wanted to try a Port with a cigar. I told him which one was my favorite (yeah I was a wine & top shelf snob because you aren't a lush if it's expensive right?). He tried it, loved it and really, really wanted me to try it. I finally had to explained that I am in recovery and he was shocked. They never realized even though we had been out numerous times to include his bachelor party that I was a "quitter" and damn proud of it. Plus I save a shite ton of money now.

Eh. I had a friend I grew up with who apparently turned into an alcoholic after we graduated HS (shocked the shite out of me becuase she was one of sweet almost-but-not-quite nerdy girls you don't even expect to drink). Anyway... she's on my FB now and she celebrates x number of years sober. It's part of their healing process and helps them keep from backlsiding I guess.
But anyone who goes through AA or NA will talk about their sobriety -- it's part of making amends and such.

Don't know whether to be happy or sad for them. Makes me confused but I always feel as though they were waiting for the opportunity to tell me. Somebody says " Thanks, no coffee for me." Then they say " Yeah, it's been 6 months since I snorted cocaine." If you say WTF you are trapped so walk away saying " That's cool man."

Addiction is nothing but an excuse... People who say they are addicted are just weak-minded pathetic people.

You've apparently never known an addict. It's not an excuse at all. It's a legitimate disease.
