What a rough last 2 months, but today has been especially challenging

My FIL has diabetes & somehow hurt his foot

My wife told him to go to the doctor for damn near a year

Well, he finally went 2 months ago

At 1st, we thought he was gonna lose a few toes

Turned out to be his right leg up to the knee

Problem, he was a HEAVY drinker

So. We spent 2 weeks in the hospital dealing with DTs

Then they took the leg

He got out a out a week ago

He is wallowing in self pity (can't say I blame him)

My wife & her brother are taking turns spending the night with him, tonight is her night...

I can honestly say that I never wanted to or thought I would see my father in law's penis...

Anyway, he has some cash (thank God) so we have home health care sitters during the week ($2,000 or so a week)

We just did potty time & the wife is cleaning him up for bed

Me? I'm buying long term are insurance in the next few weeks

What have I learned? I have learned that somewhere out there is a 20 something year old that may be wiping my arse someday...

Yeah, I think I'm ready for long term care insurance...

My wife and I signed up for it several years ago. It's a hard choice. Do I really want to live like that or just find a way to end it. I guess I have signed up to see what happens at this point.

I know your pain. I watched both parents die ugly deaths. Cancer in one, Alzheimer’s in the other.

I have a bottle of barbiturates stashed. No way I go thru that bullshite. I’m not contributing to the greedy fricks in the misery business.

Be careful, not like the old days where it was lifetime and had cost of living increases. Some of the newer policies cut off after 1 to 5 years and many no longer have the cost of living increases.

That said, if you can get a good policy, it will be the best thing you ever bought.

You may want to look into long term care riders attached to life insurance.

LTC standalone products are being gutted or have unreal rising premiums to pay out the benefits.

When attached to whole life, long term care rider benefits create a natural hedge effect with the death benefit. As in, the riders are considerably cheap relative to standalone products + you get added life insurance

If you just get standalone LTC and die without using it, you paid a F ton of premium with no benefits. With a WL you get some $ back on top of protection in that situation

I need to look into this. My brother died in December and was in and out of hospitals for the last 5 years. Spent a lot of time helping him use the bathroom, so I know what you mean.

My wife and I have no kids. I do need to look into long term care insurance. We have no family to even possibly help us.

I would suggest you look into it buddy. Even if you did have family that could take care of you, do you really want to put your kids and their kids for that matter, through having to take care of you around the clock the last few years of your life?

While people are living longer and living better thanks to modern medicine the downside is that the final collapse of our health is a lot longer. What might have taken a few months can now take a few years.

Should be ineligible for Medicare and have to pay for everything out of pocket.

Poor people that smoke or don't eat a healthy (State approved of course) diet should be left to their own resources and left alone to die quickly (to ensure they don't drain valuable resources)

Nice attempt but illegal drug use probably chews up at least 1/3 of health spending. This includes abuse of legal drugs like booze and illegal drugs like dope.

I get it and I understand the sentiment

BUT, a guy like my FIL who worked his whole life and paid in to SS and medicare has every right to collect his benefits when he needs them. I would argue that he has MORE of a right to collect, despite his unhealthy and poor choices (IE heavy drinking) than someone who never paid in

the who;e health care issue is a hot mess, and I did not mean to open that can of worms ITT...

since it is opened though, do we want to get into having the government regulate behavior?

what should determine one's eligibility for benefits, or rather, should good lifestyle choices be more of a factor in determining who gets benis than fiscal contributions throughout a working career?

Taxpayers should receive the benefits they worked for, and were promised.

Govt needs to quit giving money to illegals, wasting tax dollars, and reform the tax and spending systems. It won't happen because all they do is spend money to gain votes.

I think the people really need to revolt. It's time to have congress go back to it's origin, volunteers who gave up their main work to serve, then go back to it a few years later. No pay, no benefits, nothing, just a desire to serve. No lobbyists, no special interest groups. Everyone equal.

The problem with that is that people healthy enough to live long lives cost the health care system much more on average than an obese diabetic or even a smoker. Dying young is the easiest way to extend a limited resource.

Obese people have health care costs 13.6% higher than smokers, who have the lowest total lifetime costs. Healthy people have lifetime healthcare costs almost 28% higher than smokers.

If we want to get the government involved in regulating behavior and reducing total healthcare costs, they should probably subsidize smoking.
