How do you guys explain miracles? A God?
I'm not here to influence anyone's beliefs, far from it. I just want to know how it's possible to ignore certain things. For one.....how would you explain the birth of babies? That in itself is a miracle.
Second, how do you explain people who go from crack addicts or alcoholics to people who changed? I can't believe there's not something greater than ourselves, to be able for someone to just stop drugs/alcohol? Lol they were addicted, which means they couldn't stop! How did they stop on their own?

Define a miracle?
Define a miracle?

I am agnostic.
Sometimes, SOMETHING, just gives you the Strength. It is beyond human explanation. But IT is there.
Agnosticism doesn't magically explain things. I grew up both Pentecostal and Babtist due to having two religiously different parents. Both rely on Devine FAITH and FORGIVENESS to push their religion, but only if you accept the fact that a man, called a preacher or priest, can guide you... because they are magically "chosen" to guide you in life.
I think that only you and "something else" can decide that, in the "course" of a life.
There is something higher and omnipotently in control.
But, in whose authority is it to say? It should come down to you and a higher power.
Very good post however!

I'm assuming that by "birth of babies" you don't mean the actual physical act of childbirth or even conception, but the actual start of a new life. Whatever it is that makes us alive and flips the switch to consciousness.
Yes, life and death are very mysterious things that we don't understand yet. Just because you don't understand something doesn't mean it's magic or divine though. People used to think gods controlled the weather and the changing of the seasons because they didn't understand how it worked. Now we know how they work.
If you actually meant to ask about the act of childbirth or how pregnancy works then I'd like to ask you my own question- Did you take HS biology?
Oh, wait...

It makes sense now, you probably didn't finish 7th grade.

You seem like a very naive person. You sound like the closest you've ever been to drugs is DARE class and Nancy Reagan's Just Say No campaign.
Again, just because you can't wrap your tiny handicapped brain around something doesn't make it magical.
Seriously dude, how the frick does anybody do anything? They decide they want to and they act on that decision. How do people overcome any tough situation?
The physical side of addiction is why it's so difficult for a regular user to stop. The science behind why your body becomes physically dependent on drugs is not hard to grasp.
Once somebody has gone through withdrawals and is clean and no longer is physically dependent then addiction becomes a mental thing. Studies in the past have shown that the brain of a Facebook addict behaves the same as that of a drug addict when craving and using their respective vices. Do you call it a miracle when people delete their social media? No, that's silly because you know that you just have to have the will power to suppress your urges.
Hopefully that demystifies addiction for you a bit. Addiction is strong and breaking it is a difficult thing, but its not a fricking miracle to get clean and recover.

quote:They don't. They stop with help from rehab, family, friends, and their own desire to get clean. If they need to believe that there's a higher power helping them, that's fine. The placebo effect is pretty well documented.
How did they stop on their own?

Wow bowl Jackson. You were pretty hard on him. Now say your sorry. Now that will be a miracle.

then, the stork flew over and dropped them down the chimney?
Now, with fewer chimneys I guess they just drop direct to the parents.

In fact we have an addiction thread right here on this forum. There isn't anything about it that is mystical, its a hard, long, slog towards quitting something.

I’m an atheist, and I explain miracles and god by admitting to myself that neither exist. The birth of babies is a medical procedure. Addicts conquer addiction by working hard to do so. Believe whatever helps you sleep at night tho.

I define a miracle as an event I believe to be a fact, but the none of the available explanations are congruent with reality. bullshite begetting fact.
Miracles are beautiful things; they challenge my understanding of the world and make me think. I would conjecture that most things initially viewed as miracles turn out to be the established paradigm underestimating a person or group. That's a natural origin story for legends, lore and positive stereotypes.
Unraveling the mystery of a miracle doesn't take away from their greatness: we should never celebrate ignorance. By understanding the truth of an incredible accomplishment, we can understand how to honor its arbiter.

Man, I'm with you, but you will be ridiculed for your beliefs on this board.
They are basically a bunch of good, fun-loving chaps; super intelligent. But they totally discount the supernatural, or even the possibility that anything could exist outside of space-time.
Despite their good-naturedness in almost everything else, they feel the absolute need to belittle and discount any beliefs regarding religion, and get particularity testy when you mention Jesus. Which I find strangely amusing.
I still lurk here, and will occasionally chime in, but I steer clear faith-based discussion.

We just recognize that the version of God that Christianity and other main stream religions present as their higher power is ridiculous and has been bastardized over the centuries to best fit how they want to control the idiots who believe in their religion.
