In the January issue of GQ, the Duck Dynasty star also comments on growing up in a pre-civil-rights-era Louisiana. "I never, with my eyes, saw the mistreatment of any black person," Robertson claims. "Not once. Where we lived was all farmers. The blacks worked for the farmers. I hoed cotten with them. I'm with the blacks, because we're white trash." He adds, "They're singing and happy. I never heard one of them, one black person, say, 'I tell you what: These doggone white people'—not a word!... Pre-entitlement, pre-welfare, you say: Were they happy? They were godly; they were happy; no one was singing the blues."
I'm not offended at all by that comment.

And the morning news just did what everyone here just said. Picking the parts they wanted to air.

He did not insult or even talk about his boss ergo comparison is invalid.

While I do agree that that was a stretch, and I don't think that Phil is racist, I doubt many black people in that time would've explain their troubles to many white people.
I don't think he's racist either. On the contrary, from what I know about him he's a very caring person. I just found his comment on blacks pre-civil rights came across very poorly. Perhaps he worded it wrong, but he seemed to want to extrapolate his experience to the entire situation, and his perception that they were happy came across as lacking empathy. Sure, he worked next to them doing the same thing, but at the end of the day when they clocked out, he was white and by that virtue alone had many more rights than they did and he may not have had any idea what they went through away from the fields.

The reason I liked Duck Dynasty is because it was funny and they didn't bring their own politics onto the show. That's all ruined now. I won't be watching these redneck fig haters play grab arse anymore.

Ok, but when did they bring their politics onto the show and when did a person's feelings on an issue like homosexuality become "politics?"
I'll hang up and listen.

Based on everything I've read on this thread, he was obviously insinuating that people should vote republican to keep gay marriage illegal.

It was in an interview, not in the show. If you watched the first few seasons naively believing a family that prays together daily and has full participation in their local and national ministry (I am second) didn't practice what they preach then you're the idiot..
Why is this surprising?

You shouldn't have been watching reality TV tobegin with if that's all it took to turn you off, tbh

First of all, it's reality TV. The show is entirely scripted and if you look at the credits, you'll see the show has writers.
Secondly, whether he said it to the boss of A&E is irrelevant. He is a representation of A&E. He has every right to say what he said and as an employer, they have every right to suspend him.

I never said they didn't have the right. I never said HE didn't have the right.
I'm saying I disagree with the move.

I mean, if it was a gay guy who said a guy's anus was more attractive than a vagina, would they have said "Oh we can't do nothing to him that'd make us bigots!"

I'll say the same thing in this thread that I did in the other thread...
That show is one of the stupidest shows that I've ever seen.
That being said, who cares what he believes in. If you don't like the fact that he's a Jesus freak, don't watch the show. It's that simple.
