5 ways Mars can kill you.
LINK

I think it would be uncomfortable to have your blood start boiling. I think we can pull it off but the trip to Mars is pretty damn risky.

The long-term goal of the U.S. space program is a human mission to Mars in the mid-2030s, NASA has said. The agency is currently developing more than three dozen technologies to ensure human health and support science goals for exploration beyond Earth orbit.

This is why we should go to Mars.

We have Bugs Bunny and country music to fix some of this

Yep and it will also be great to have everyone pull together for at least a minute. This is a milestone in the eye of the public.

Two reasons we need to get off the earth

#1 Spread genetic survival odds (so no ELE like the dinosaurs)
#2 Keep the desire to explore in the forefront of the human species

Keeping the exploration gene from disappearing

Imagine no Marco Polo
Imagine no westward expansion
Imagine no rocket to the moon

That's not going to happen on Mars. We can't live there long term.

Certainly not above ground but underground may be possible

In the long view, and the next level of evolution is city / state level engineering to planet level engineering where you get something like terraforming at the planetary level.

If the human population was forced to live underground on Mars, it's probably best to just let us die off.

What if the time underground was 100 years compared to the time frame of humans on the earth?

The tech and finance part of my brain says plan for the long term survival of the species above all else which is why I have such issue with the modern marketers profiteering on short term use. The pyramids are still standing to day when some of the housing stock built in the USA it targeted for 20 years. It is a bit insane.

In the span of 100 years I can easily see the human race jumping to the next level of species intelligence (planet scale) if we would go back to intelligent shows on the History channel instead of making it all about aliens in the past and future.

Viewed another way

Level A can built a single shelter but can't control the elements
Level B can built a community but control of the elements is viewed as god
Level C can build a city but still view god as controller of the elements
Level D can build a nation but can predict weather based on science
Level E can build in space around planet and understand weather better
Level F can build at the planetary level and has control of the weather
Level G can build at the solar system level and can build the weather

I don't think the time frame is important. If shite goes down on Earth, I think we need an option where people can live above ground without the need of a breathing apparatus, and with the prospect of starting a new permanent civilization on that planet. If we have to go to Mars for 100 years and just hope Earth is habitable 100 later, then the human race is essentially over.

Mars might have to be a temporary stop until we can figure out how to get to other solar systems within a reasonable amount of time. The colonization of Mars at least give us an option if some bad shite goes down here.

Do you think you could do that from Mars? I imagine you would have a very small population, and I imagine you probably wouldn't have the resources to feed yourself that long nor the resources to build something capable of reaching another solar system.

re: 5 ways Mars can kill you.
We can't colonize Mars. We can try going underground to escape radiation and we can manufacture our own oxygen but there's nothing we can do about the low gravity.

Since Mars has less mass than Earth, the surface gravity on Mars is less than the surface gravity on Earth. The surface gravity on Mars is only about 38% of the surface gravity on Earth, so if you weigh 200 pounds on Earth, you would weigh only 76 pounds on Mars.

Muscle atrophy would set in quickly and would bar any return to earth in the short term. In the long term, the physiological and psychological changes would be so extreme as to surely be fatal.

We can't know until we go, of course, so go we will. It will be an awesome adventure for humanity but I don't see any worthwhile gains leading to further manned missions into space. We just have to take too much of our environment with us for it to be cost effective.

I personally think advancing our mapping capabilities is more important than living on Mars. We can't even view G-type stars with any detail ATM. These next class of telescopes will be the next chapter in learning where we fit in the scheme of things. Mars, without terraforming, will never be more than a science project for us. All material for survival would need to be shipped there.

re: 5 ways Mars can kill you.
The reason Mars is important is because it's a tangible goal that can be achieved in the near future to keep the money flowing. No one is going to put money into funding for a goal they stand zero chance of seeing achieved in their lifetime.

A lot of people won't be alive 15-20 years from now when we attempt to get to Mars.

And as long as the government keeps funding NASA, they will have money. Very few people will consider not voting for someone because a candidate is pro-NASA. A trip to Mars is pretty worthless. Public opinion isn't that important in this case.

If you want a tangible goal, set a goal to get a clear picture of a planet in a neighboring galaxy or solar system.
