Why does the SEC Start Conference Play Immediately Instead of 5 Weeks Later?

Immediate big game ratings?
Mizzou won't be fortunate enough to have 4 non conference games in a row every year.
How do we adjust to future schedules like last year? I just don't see it happening well for us.

The SEC attempts to have on meaningful conference game each week. Get the conference a prime game on TV when everyone else is playing patsies.

I like it but we will have problems. The answer was already given, get better

This and I think it would be nice to have a patsy in between say a Georgia and Florida game in the future. Not quite a bye week, but the next best thing to break up the grind of the
SEC schedule. Personally would have liked to have seen our first bye week after either Ark State or Vandy.

The SEC network debuts next year. The SEC wants all SEC teams to have an attractive schedule which should include one a BCS non conference opponent.

Pretty much this. I wouldn't be surprised if ESPN had a say in it as well for TV reasons

I believe there is some rule like, you cant play more than 3 straight SEC Opponents without a bye or non-con game. This is why they chop it up. I mean we wait all year for CFB, I always hated being bored an extra month until relevant games started.

In theory, the dates of the 4 non conference games should not have any impact on whether or not Mizzou beats the teams they are supposed to beat. Obviously, injuries and Sheldon's issues as the season progressed caused problems last year. Nonetheless, the Tigers still went 3-1 in non conference play last year.
However, as Mizzou continues playing (and recruiting) in the SEC, I fully expect both improved recruits and improved depth, alleviating the problems that caused the late season loss to Syracuse last year.
Mizzou is in the SEC. SEC teams beat their non conference opponents. Thus far, Mizzou is 6-1 in non conference play as an SEC member (7-1 after next weekend). I'd say that's a good start.
2014 Non Conference Games
Week 1: vs. South Dakota State
Week 2: at Toledo
Week 3: vs. UCF
Week 4: vs. Indiana
2015 Non Conference Games
at Arkansas State
2016 Non Conference Games
TBA
2017 Non Conference Games
vs. Wyoming
vs. Purdue
2018 Non Conference Games
at Wyoming
at Memphis
at Purdue
(Note: 3 away games... Will the SEC be playing 9 conference games in 2018?)
2019 Non Conference Games
vs. Wyoming
vs. Memphis
Those certainly look like teams that an SEC team should beat.

2014's OOC schedule could be very tough.

I would not consider it "very tough."
South Dakota State is an FCS team. I do not consider playing an FCS opponent at home to be very tough competition for Mizzou (or any other SEC team). Nebraska just beat South Dakota State 59-20 at home.
The Toledo away game is, in my opinion, the toughest game, and that is only because it is an away game against a Toledo team that Mizzou didn't exactly run away from this year (It should be noted that GP could have run up the score in this game, but apparently chose not to considering his history at Toledo). Nonetheless, SEC teams should beat MAC teams. A Mizzou loss will be an upset and a disappointment. Will Toledo come into this game with a pumped up crowd and a team looking for revenge? Probably. Will Toledo have the talent to beat Mizzou? We'll see.
The home game against UCF will probably be Mizzou's most talented competition. UCF did leave Penn State with an upset win this year. However, Penn State is barely fielding a complete team at the moment due to the Sandusky penalties. I expect more than a few teams could "upset" Penn State this year. Any Mizzou fan will tell you that poor depth, whether caused by injuries or defections+scholarship penalties, can lead to disastrous results against inferior competition. Finally, Mizzou did beat UCF in an away game last year. Obviously, you can't extrapolate that result to a win at home for Mizzou in 2014, but that extrapolation sure is tempting.
UCF still has games against SCAR, Louisville, and Rutgers this year. Let's see how those games end before anointing UCF with too many accolades.
The Indiana home game should be a win considering last weekend's result.

To force the networks to pay the SEC big $$ for TV contracts.

As tough as the SEC is to play, getting a patsy in week 8 is almost like a bye week.
The problem is, like we found out last year, you start tough play early, and we got banged up.

Considering how UCF played against us last year, I'm more scared of that game than the other games.

That's the "SEC grind" that we heard so much about. In the big 12, we generally started conference play healthy. In the SEC, we can't depend on that being the case. Everyone has injuries, throughout the season, and we just didn't have the depth last season to absorb it. And, we had more injuries than most. I'm anxious to see how much better we can be this year.

For selfish reasons I wish we would have played 1 SEC game right now or at least next weekend, but it has been really good for the team it seems so I am okay with it.
Also, I bet we are gonna be playing a lot of road games in November for coming seasons, I feel like the SEC may have purposely given us home games earlier in the SEC schedule and road games later when it would be cold here. Maybe I am wrong and it was just a coincidence though.
