That there is the debatable point. Video is at least from before December, as evidenced by the haircut. If this video/situation was the reason for original suspension, it seems to me that it would be bad look to re-punish him after already reinstating him.
The play by Mizzou all along though has pretty clearly been to try to avoid this coming out and just keep it vaguely that he was "suspended for violation of team rules." As long as Mizzou could somewhat avoid the world at large knowing what the violation was, it could try to keep him around and fix it internally.
My guess is that Mauk and the coaching staff and AD have understood all along that if Maty's coke use become public, Mizzou would have to publicly be all "oh my gosh we had no idea" and give him the boot coinciding with a strong public service announcement that "drugs are bad, mmmkay." Which is where we are now.
From a PR standpoint, a recruiting standpoint, and a team harmony standpoint moving forward, I don't think Mizzou can afford to let the national public perception be that a kid caught doing coke is allowed to stay with the program. Regardless of when the video was taken I think Mizzou has to act surprised as if its never seen it before and take action.
Remember how Michael Dixon situation went down. It wasn't what he was actually alleged to have done in 2010 that pushed him out - it was the story of what may have happened in 2010 finally getting picked up by the media in 2012 along with his more recent accusation. Whatever one thinks of it, that's probably just the way this goes in terms of college sports PR...there's what has happened, what might have happened, and what the media runs with as having might have happened, and the latter is the one that an athletic department and university will always knee jerk to and take action on.

Odom's first mistake as HC, reinstating Mauk. Many fans stated that then, and I seconded. Hindsight is 20/20.
I understand a coach supporting his players, but everything has a limit. A smart coach knows these limits.

Well, Rhoades first mistake as AD was hiring Henson as HC

... Yes you should look at yourself in the mirror before pointing out someone else's problems. No one is perfect. Everyone makes mistakes.

But now since I did that I will say yes the video is very old, yes Maty has been doing everything he can to be a better person and
Scherer clearing up quite a bit.
Dave Matter story seems to confirm what was obvious. He says sources confirm initial suspension was due to failed drug test (meaning they knew about drug use). Sources say video is 2 years old...and teammate says he has cleaned up his act and has been "clean for awhile"
Other teammates are tweeting support for Mauk saying he has cleaned up and gotten better.

Will it matter?

I don't like or dislike the kid. I liked the qb when he first got here. Less and less the more he played. I was done with him when I learned he was allegedly dealing. My views remain the same, even solidified, with the video.
Ever think that his apparent drug use might be a part of his poor play? You wanna do recreational drugs? Cool. I have plenty of friends that have/do. But do it on your dime, not mine as the qb of the team I support with time, energy and money. If he wants to be joe citizen and do it...fine.

Agreed Semo. It effected his play and team chemistry that it was team mates that brought it to coaches

And that's why I'm done and have been since October. Cut the loss, help him get help, and move on.

How would it not matter? He has already been suspended for a failed drug test, he has already been punished, since you don't fail a drug test without... drug use.
To boot him now when he is admittedly on the right track, or they wouldn't have reinstated him, would be wrong IMO.

Oh I see it the same, I think. I realise you don't fail drug tests without...having taken drugs. But that's not what I meant by "will it matter?".
Will it matter is refering to him being clean and still reinstated to the program, but..... Will they just go ahead and cut ties due to the program not wanting the distractions of MM? Whether or not he's clean or dirty testwise. What other things are floating around out there? Like maybe other videos. It's the last thing you need around a team and when you're trying to recruit HS kids. Obviously someone decided to release this video right before national signing day, kind of good or bad timing depending on who you are and what your intentions are releasing a video like this now. I think Odom has to cut MM now. No matter what.

Let's say I rob a house. I'm convicted, do jail time and follow the terms of my parole. Then, a video of that crime is made public. Am I re-arrested?
Maty may have fricked up big time previously, but if he's doing what he's been told to do to stay on the team, I don't see how a two-year old video impacts it.
If Odom lets him go, he's telling his players that his word means nothing.

If you're part of an organization that relies of public perception, then yes, that should be in account. As the program or organizarion who is taking the risk of bad perception, it's within their rights to decide how much of a risk you are and if it is worth the risk keeping you.
MM has been suspended twice. So what arebthe chances of a reoccurrance? Pretty high.
I don't think Odom is sending a bad message by cutting Mauk. He's sending the message that this can't continue. If it does, they will follow procedure. If they push the envelope, they'll be cut. If your a player that has a problem with that, then Mizzou isn't the place for you.

But apparently it isn't continuing...? What message are you sending when you say that you will dictate your behavior and punishments on public perception?

We don't know what Maty copped to when he faced his initial suspension. For all we know, he said,"Yeah, I did X, Y and Z. But I never did blow. No way, man."
