I get the “our fan base sucks” thing to a point. But, let’s be honest.

Mizzou is not a blue blood blue chip program. That was all fricked years ago. GP put Miz back on the map. That’s all he did. A big, huge accomplishment, but at the end of the day that is where he left the program.

GP took a program and school that was at the bottom to something respectable. There was a shot at something more, but it was missed. I don’t take anything away from 2007 or 2013, but they were missed opportunities to do something more than that.

After GP, it’s been less than expectations for what has happened over the last decade.

The fan base is made up of people who expect nut kicks, and people who expect better. There isn’t an in between.

Those who expect nut kicks are sure it will happen given the last two years, and those who are used to a better program don’t have anything to go on other than the last two years.

Mizzou has to win consistently to change that

What difference about this year and last year? The D was run by Cross and it was changed mid way through the season. This year Missouri will have a full off season with the current defense. Cross defense was bad and it cost Missouri some games. Now I feel Missouri will win 8 games because both the defense and offense will be better this year. Plus a better OC than Jost Heupel based on Josh offense that produced a lot of 3 and out plays. I am seeing a much better team overall this year than last year. Also Josh Heupel did not coach the bowl game and that hurt Missouri big time.

I don't expect great interest in the team to start the year, but my hope is that if we get off to a good start that the fans will respond. This program desperately needs a solid backing at it would be a shame if they didn't get it.

No matter how the season goes the attendance will likely be the lowest in decades.

No offense but how old are you?

I’m on board that there are a lot of positives going into this season. Some consistency on D coaching and scheme goes a long way to being at least consistent on D.

This thread is about excitement for this year, and at this point a lot of the fans need to see it before they believe it.

This year is a great opportunity for Mizzou to show that the can be competitive and win in the sec other than a fluke 1-2 seasons. And I think they have a lot of the pieces to do that. Win 8+ games and give Georgia a scare and that goes a long way with fans. Fans will show up when they think there’s a chance at winning. Starting the season 2-4 won’t do it.

If Mizzou is 3-0 heading into the Georgia game, people will show up

I am so tired of seeing the, "I was a fan in the 80's-90's" whiners on this board. Guess what old timer, you've had two decades of mostly winning seasons, 4 trips to conference championships in two different conferences, and you've seen three of the biggest wins in program history in that time. Quit yer bitchin'!

As far as this season goes. As sad as it is to say I agree with an earlier response that the Purdue game will make or break this season. It is a must win! Being 3-0 heading into the UGA game should be expected. If they make it 1-2 throught the UGA, SC, Bama streach then Mizzou has indeed turned the corner. If we are 3-3 after that streach all is not lost. Mizzou would still be half way to bowl eligibilty. For me personally, barely making it to a bowl would be a failure. Mizzou would have to go 5-1 the second half of the season to have, what I feel, would be a sucessful record (8-4). I think we will flip the UK and Florida games from last season. Memphis, Tenn, Vandy, and Arky are all winnable games. Winning a bowl game and going 9-4 would be an awesome season for ol' BO.

Holy shite. I predicted the team to go 10-2 this year.

I was just trying give an explanation why the fan base can be fickle.

1) The texas bowl loss. That was pathetic.
2) Underwhelming 10th choice OC hire.
3) Last offseason the team regressed terribly. Concern it will happen again.
4) No signs of being competitive on a high level last year. If we had pummeled texas, probably a different story right now.
5) Botched SEZ renovation. If that was done right, I think more would be excited in general but it is going to look terrible when done.
6) Basketball fizzled.
7) Recruiting is going worse than just about anyone could expect. Home state kids just aren't interested.
8) Games will be in a construction site this year. Small crowds are never all that much to look forward to.
9) The AD doesn't seem to have a pulse at all when it comes to being THE state school of Missouri. There is no pride or passion coming out of the AD.
10) Koolaid drinking local media is non-existent.

All the things you listed is all inside your own head. Do you realize Barry have turned this team around from a bad start due to DC Cross being bad. Barry got Missouri to a bowl game and yes we did bad against Texas and guess who is to blame for the lack of offense? Josh Heupel that bolted in last minute and took offensive line coach with him and both did not coach the bowl game. That is what hurt Missouri and it also hurt Missouri in recruiting. It was not Barry Odom fault for that. But Barry keep finding a good or better replacement of a hire in Dooley. I really like the Dooley hire. You must not want Barry to succeed and see him fail so that Missouri will hire a coach that probably set Missouri back to losing ways. I am dead serious Barry is the best thing that Missouri could have gotten due to all the problems Missouri went through over the last few years. It was not Barry fault for all of this but he is doing a lot better with all the stuff been going on in the last few years. Right now I am not hearing or seeing any problems at Missouri and that is a very good sign that Missouri is out of it right now.

I don’t know about the Dooley hire. it might work out, he’s taking over a good situation so the offense should be good this season.

Well Barry did say he was blown away what Dooley have shown him during the interview. What does that tell you about that? Barry would not risk his job for something he did not see it as a good hire. That alone is good enough since Barry have hired everyone else and did a very good job so far. Only one that turned out to be a poor hire was the DC Cross. That I can understand why he did hire him. He is a very good friend and they had planned to team up together when the opportunity arise. That however did not workout. I feel that Barry will be better than Garry Pinkel down the road.

I think it's good that everything is quiet. Hopefully this means the team is focused on working and competing. Getting rid of Cross was huge.

I'm excited and I'll watch every game.

Offense should be great, I think 10 wins is very possible.

Anyone remember HC Will Muschamp at Florida? He admit he made some mistakes there. Now at South Carolina and is doing a lot better. I am seeing Barry Odom that made some mistakes early on at Missouri. This year he should get Missouri back on to winnings ways and back to back bowl games. I am impress with his ability to find coaches when he needed them at the most critical times and position. This is why I am glad he is at Missouri and he even said this is his dream job. Would any top tier head coaches would stay at Missouri after being offer a job at other schools that have a better program in football than Missouri? He is the right guy for Missouri to lead to success now and onto the future.

God bless these younger fans, but having a dismissive attitude towards us older fans is pretty laughable to me. They simply do not have much of a perspective yet in life. One thing I've learned, and you can attest to, is change can happen, and happen quickly, sometimes it's good change, but for the most part of a Mizzou fan it hasn't been good.

You younger guys have first hand experience in what we have experienced for yourselves. Remember when Mizzou first came into the SEC and the narrative was we had to pick up our game, we are in a powerhouse conference now and won't be competitive if we don't? So we win a couple of East crowns and things appear to be rolling in the right direction, then bam, the sjw protest erupted and the air was let out and Mizzou has been trying to dig it's way out ever since. The multi level politics of why and how that happens is irrelevant to the point, which is change can happen and happen fast.

Another narrative floating around here (mostly promoted by the originator of this thread) that we somehow hate Odom, want him to fail, and/or fired. That's just so ridiculous and naive. Sure, probably a small bunch would like that to happen, but the vast majority of Mizzou fans of any age wants to see Odom succeed. He is one of us, and wants to be here. It doesn't take a whole lot of sense to realize that Odom succeeding is only for the betterment of Mizzou.

As for me personally about this upcoming year, taking a wait and see attitude. Too many unknowns for me to get excited right now, and I'm not sold on Odom yet. That is a legit concern and criticism, based on what he has done so far and recruiting as a whole. I want the man to succeed here, I will be rooting for that to happen, I want him to relieve those concerns, I want him to prove me wrong.

I disagree with the protest really having a major effect on the team winning.

Mauk, DGB, and a host of recruiting problems is why Pinkel failed in 2015.

Whether it had a major effect on the team winning is a matter of opinion, it certainly had an impact on the perception of Mizzou. Along with Pinkel's health, it was also a factor with him stepping down, which did impact winning due to having to hire a new coach and the toxic atmosphere that existed.

I'm excited for this season. The tigers should be a pretty good team. I kinda have a little 07'or 13' feeling about this team. My main concerns are whether the coaching staff has them prepared for the season right out of the gate or not? And how does Dooley work out as OC? Tough draw playing the 2 best teams in the country, but also a tremendous opportunity to beat the best.

The reason I'm not excited has nothing to do with BO. It is the fact that it means I have to see more of your posts.

Nice troll thread on your own team's board.
