there would have been NO war if slavery wasn't an issue.

I think something else would have triggered it. We're human, and unfortunately fighting seems to be in our nature. Too many people can't coexist with those who don't agree with them.

If you look at history, every major country has had internal disagreements, civil wars, revolts, uprisings - whatever you choose to call it. From the assassination of Julius Caesar to the French Revolution, every country that was a world power has had this problem. Some group gets mad at the ones in charge, decides they're being treated unfairly, and they start a fight about it. It was a growing pain in our country's history. Considering how polarized we are politically an argument could be made that we're on the verge of another one.

If it weren't slavery, it would have been something else. When we're left without an external enemy, we look for internal ones. It's just unfortunately in our nature to need someone or some thing to be "against".

What would have caused the south to secede? That the reason we went to war. I'm just not sure if there was something else in the political climate at that time that had enough weight to trigger this event.

Interesting stuff. The Civil War period is fascinating.

The taxes were raised from 15% to 50% in '59. That was a heck of a trigger.

The south was getting free labor and had a great export/import with Europe. The north did not like this. They clamped down with the taxes to transfer wealth to the industrial north. Economics was the driving factor in all of this, sure there were regular citizens who thought slavery was morally wrong, which is why it was used as an emotional tool to ignite the war. But the men in power could have really cared less, it was all about economics.

War is always about economics. Always. The emotional issues are used to incite the violence, but it's always about money. Even if we get involved for "humanitarian" reasons? There's always money at the root of it, somewhere.
