We are probably related somehow. That whole area, Leopold, Advance, Marble Hill etc is crawling with family. If you have a German last name we are cousins somewhere down the line.

So drive to Memphis Friday after we both get off work. Stay in Memphis. Drive to Jonesboro Sat seems like the best plan of attack at this stage? Heading right back to St Louis after. Rams game and tailgate Sunday.
Anyone else doing the Memphis to Jonesboro drive on Saturday?
Trying to convince the person in charge to make this happen.

Really small world, we are probably the only two people on here that can talk about the Leopold Picnic. Hahahahahah. The last time I was in Leopold was for my grandma's funeral. Like all good Catholics from that area she is buried at St. John's. Elfrinks, Beussinks, Vandeven, Nenniger, Jansen and more that I cannot remember...in some way shape or form I am related to them all. My grandma was Irish, Beel was her maiden name and they are from that area also.

Heh, got damn those picnics were some fun times.Usually hot as frick, but somehoow lived to tell about it the next day.Always run into someone there that I crossed paths with from back in the day.Last one I went to was back in 2013.Those fine folk up there sure know how to cook.No one on this planet can make any better kettled beef or chicken and dumplins.Been to a helluva lot of weddings and receptions up there at the church and KC Hall.Know too many Elfrink, Beussink, Vandeven, Nenniger, Jansen, and Beel to count.

Amen, makes me hungry thinking about it. Drank many many a beer in the KC Hall, have slept under a table at least twice that I can recall. Grandparents were Elfrink's, when I was younger I knew most all of them. Beussink's I know most of, several first cousins are Beussink's once you stray into the rest of them I don't know them as well but know that we are related somehow, some way.

We are headed down from KC. Looks like some fun driving between Springfield and Jonesboro. We are staying about an hour west Friday night. I'm thinking we might not have Memphis atmosphere...

With the late start Saturday we thought we could get a little Memphis going on Friday night. She isnt really keen on staying in and around Jonesboro on Friday, no offense meant. She doesnt go to Rams games with me.
Im starting to think she is wavering though on going at all. Outlook isnt good for this trip and or a road trip at all this year. None "planned" this year so my next pop may be the trip to Knoxville again next year because of family there. Im not giving up hope but its not looking promising.

I hate Memphis. Only good thing is Beale Street and it gets old fast. Let me rephrase that, only thing good about Beale Street is a diver from Silky's. If you like pan handlers and feeling pretty unsafe everywhere you go then Memphis will fill the bill. Even in college Memphis was only worth going to twice a year. For New Years Eve and for Memphis in May. Beyond that, blah...

Really? Havent really every done the Memphis thing. Is it better just to find some spot to lay low around Jonesboro instead? Obviously the Mizzou game is important part but I have to sell the trip a little if you know what I mean.

Honestly it depends on your age. Beale Street if you haven't ever done it can be fun, but do seriously watch out for panhandlers. During the day Memphis is fine, and there is some really good bbq in the city that is certainly worth trying. Mud Island is kind of neat, and they did just open a big ole bass pro shop in the Pyramid. If it was baseball season, or if they made the playoffs, the Redbirds are worth checking out very nice stadium for minor league. I guess maybe I am just cynical and have done the Memphis thing too much and look too much at and for the negative now instead of the good things, and there are really some good things.

I think everyone would be surprised at downtown Jonesboro. It seems like it might be a hick town, but there are 70,000 people and 13,000 college kids. The downtown has been really revitalized and has good eats and drinks. The Brickhouse, Skinny J's, Omars Downtown, the 501, the Italian place that I cannot ever remember the name of (Vino's maybe). All of those places will have decent to good food and drinks and generally a good mix of folks. Some will have live music, some will have DJ all of them should have TV's. If chains are more your thing, Jonesboro basically has them all from Buffalo Wild Wings to Red Lobster to Longhorn. For those staying there it won't be nearly as bad as you think it might be.

Graduated with a Beussink.Aunt married a Vandeven.Stepfather's family is all Jansen and Nenniger.Everybody knows everybody down there.I'm impressed that old store is still open after all these years. When I was a youngster I almost plowed into a cop that pulled out in front of me when I was driving through the hills.Miracously, I wasn't pulled over.Needless to say, my heard skipped a couple beats that night.

I am no Memphis expert, but when we go down to Tunica every so often I would not want to have to stop for gas in Memphis on the way there at night.Would like to go to a Redbirds game sometime though.

Indeed, my cousin always drove since he was a native and I was a flat lander. I am not a nervous person at all, but those damned hills driving 100 in a little old ford fiesta made me want to simultaneously shite myself and puke all over the place.

I wasn't driving 100, but pretty sure I was over the speed limit.Never in a million years would I expect a fricking cop sitting there in someone's field on the other side of one of those hills.Aside from the picnic, that is the only time I have ever seen a cop anywhere near there.Luckily, there wasn't anyone in the other lane or that cop would have been nailed.Driving through those hills on a Sunday morning to church while hungover is something I don't miss.
I knew someone who had a Fiesta.Thank God Ford buried those things.

If it was orange, it was my 1st cousin Andy. That car had to be a one off. He went to school in Leopold and did the basketball thing and all of that.

Thanks for all the advice and info all. Not looking good for my road trip though sadly.
