Non-sports/Missouri question

I'm in my first year living in Missouri (in CoMo). My wife and I have a 5yo son and are looking for something to get us out of the house this weekend.
We had a great fall here with apple orchards, pumpkin patches, etc. And hey, the Cardinals were a lot of fun too. Lately, we're getting cabin fever. It's supposed to be pretty warm this weekend.
I would love to see the Churchill museum or all of the Mark Twain stuff (lake, cave, birthplace, Hannibal), but none of that's going to do anything for my kid. I'd take him back to Fantastic Caverns, but I am hoping to stay closer than Springfield.
Ideas, anyone?!? Thank you.

Are you willing to drive to KC or STL or are you wanting to stay around CoMo?
I noticed you said you wanted to stay closer than Springfield, but that's 3 hours from CoMo compared to 2 hours to KC or STL.

KC or STL would be fine ...

The Science Center at Union Station (itself an attraction) in KC is excellent. While in KC, you can also go the Plaza for shopping and eating in a beautiful Spanish architectural setting.
There is the nation's national World War 1 museum right by Union Station, and plenty of hotels nearby.
Here is two websites for more ideas:

For the adults there is incredible food (not just barbecue) made by nationally recognized James Beard award winning chefs (KC has 4 winners) all of them with reasonable cost approachable menus and more art museums and galleries than you can shake a stick at. Most attractions for kids are low cost or free.
Let me know if you have more questions
At least this is a start.

Can only speak on St Louis. For kids, St Louis City Museum, Magic House and Zoo are all fun. Some of the kid activities at City Museum have minimum age or height requirements without adult supervision, but friends have taken 4 and 5 year old kids and they had fun. The zoo is one of the better ones in the country.
Hope you find some fun activities to get out and enjoy.

Agreed. OP, your kid would LOVE science city at union station. We took many field trips there when I was a kid...it's a lot of fun especially for the kids.
Also if you have any interest in college basketball, the College Basketball Experience (CBE) at Sprint Center is also very cool. It houses the NCAA Basketball hall of fame as well as lots of interactive basketball games, and basketball courts.

The Kansas City Zoo is also pretty good as well as the botanical gardens.

Crown Center is a great shopping/entertainment place downtown with an outdoor Ice Rink. Sea Life aquarium is cool at Crown Center, as well as Kaleidoscope. Actually, Kaleidoscope and Science City would be my top 2 recommendations for things your son would enjoy. It's impossible for a kid not to have fun at either of those places.

Also, MizzouJim's links above are very helpful
I can't speak as much for STL, but I hear good things about the City Museum, zoo, and Blues games.

The Science Center in St. Louis is very cool too. It's off Highway 40, across the highway from Forest Park. There is a cool elevated walkway over the highway that connects the Science Center and the Planetarium in Forest Park. The Magic House is also very cool, but if it's warm I'd do the Science Center and the Zoo. The Zoo in Forest Park is free, and one of the best zoos I've ever been to.

Stl Science Center is overrated. Just my opinion and all of my friends.

Add Grant's Farm in St. Louis for the kids. Think they still keep the AB Clydesdales there.

There's AB Clydesdales in Boonville, I know.

The City Museum is way better than the science center. Also don't forgot about Magic House in Kirkwood.

Thanks to everyone for their advice! As the rain/snow never stopped yesterday in CoMo, we stayed in town. I promised my kid that I would take him to this museum just east of CoMo, which, despite the active website, apparently closed almost three years ago.
We wound up going to Going BONKERS. He ran around in this huge, multi-story playground for a solid hour. He is now totally gassed. Excellent afternoon!
