A little known secret - the blacknblus’ are from Blue Springs, and so far my daughter has applied to the following in-state schools:
Rockhurst (being considered for full ride)
UMKC (being considered for full ride)
Mizzou (Curators Scholarship - $4,500 year)
Missouri State (accepted — no aid offered yet)
Truman State (accepted - 4 k scholarship)
SLU (submitted to purgatory)
(No - we’re not Catholic)
Did any of you go to (or are going to) one of the schools on the list? Are there other schools you would add? My daughter is pretty opposed to S&T (I have no clue why), and would rather go out of State ($$$), so I think we need to work with what we have.
She plans on majoring in Biology (if that matters). Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

What does she want to do?
My daughter is at UMKC. I went to Mizzou.

Keep applying for scholarships. Mizzou has over 100k worth of scholarship money every year that goes unclaimed.

She wants to go to Medical School and be a Doctor. We've hit the UMKC 6 year program pretty hard, but she's worried that she won't like being a doctor -
SO... TL;DR - she really doesn't know

My daughter was offered far better scholarships by every school not named Mizzou, FWIW.

What does she think she wants to do?
Doctor - UMKC or MU
Teaching - Truman
I attended both MSU and MU. My experience says MU Fin Aid will find a lot more help for your daughter.
Only reason to think about S&T is if she wants to be an engineer. That's where my son is going.

My daughter is in the med program there. She’d be happy to text with her or whatever if she wants. It’s certainly not for the faint of heart. (And an academic scholarship doesn’t apply there sadly.)
ETA: a full ride at a state school + med school is still more expensive than UMKC med school with no aid.

She's written more essays in the past month than I think over 2 years of high school. I'm hoping that pays off!

That's really cool of you

I'll bring it up in conversation.

A friend of a friend did it for her. And she’s had several kids from her high school reach out to her after she got in. One of them is a sophomore in the program now. So it can help either way.

I know nothing about UMKC's program, but if the thought is to be a doctor, I'd imagine that SLU has the best med school. At least from a reputation standpoint.
If money is not a factor, I would imagine the best med school in the state is Washington University but it's super expensive.
My philosophy is go wherever you get the best offer of those choices. All good schools. They will all provide a quality education if you put forth the effort. You will get a job regardless of which one you go to as long as you apply yourself. In other words...no wrong answer.

Went to UMKC for grad school (Bloch School of Biz)...not med, but man loved UMKC. Good luck to your daughter.

SLU’s med school has actually had some accreditation issues recently. But it’s probably more administrative than anything.
Any of the med schools in state are good with Wash U being elite. Mizzou is probably slightly better than SLU. UMKC probably has the least impressive reputation, but that’s skewed because of research.

If she actually wants to go the med school route than what Bass says is correct. SLU has had some issues in the recent past.
MU has a little more prestige over UMKC but only because of the research dollars. WashU is head & shoulders above all.
If she just wants to major in Bio than don't go to a non-research school (Truman, MoState, Rockhurst). Again MU is held in higher regards but its goes back to go with where offers more.
Also, not that you asked but I wouldn't just go for a straight Bio degree go into one of the specialities (BioChem, bioengineering, molecular, etc) so as to not limit yourself later in your career.
I got my undergrad and grad degree (BioChem) from Mizzou and then went to a B1G school for post-doc and the programs were very comparable from the class work aspect. The differentiator is the ungodly amount of research dollars they bring in.
Eta: actually I don't know anything about Rockhurst so ignore what I said there.

You can actually differentiate yourself by getting a non-bio undergrad major for med school.
Philosophy is an oddly popular one.

Rockhurst could be fine. Just depends on the student. We have a friend who was pre accepted to SLU med and went to Rockhurst. She’s second year med school now.

take the best financial deal between UMC and UMKC

Lots of different paths, putting in the work is the common element.
Just to clarify most of my comment was if she didn't want to go to med school at all.
My coworkers daughter is finishing up her 5th year at UMKC (6 year program), and she loves it. The hard part is it sounds like they don't get the same time off as the regular students, so she isn't home as much.

If she does the 6-year med, only outside scholarships or bright flight works. UMKC has some need based for med school, but it’s limited to a very few students.
But as I said, even if you get a full ride for undergrad, med school will be around $200k for even Mizzou. 6 year at UMKC is about the same as just Mizzou med.

Brother went the Mizzou route for undergrad and Med School. Fullride undergrad though due to academics and athletics. Double major in Bio and The Classics. He enjoyed his time.
Had a friend who went the 6 year UMKC dental route. Enjoyed it for the most part except for some... issues with the department I won’t mention. I’ll just say they delayed his graduation for reasons that were essentially fabricated..
I’ll just say keep the student debt in the back of your mind. If she’s not completely sold on Med school, it sounds like she needs more exposure first so the most cost effective undergrad decision may be the wisest.
