I'll admit to being part of the "Fire Barry Odom" screaming on Saturday

But taking a step back, it helps to have some perspective.

Record through first 3 seasons:
Odom: 19-19
Pinkel: 17-19

Bowl games through first 3 seasons:
Odom: 2 (loss x2)
Pinkel: 1 (loss)

Fourth season:
Pinkel: 5-6 (including loss @ Troy)
Odom: 0-1/TBD (includes loss @ Wyoming)

Odom is in his fourth season. After four seasons, Pinkel had a 22-25 record, 1 bowl loss, and a 5-6 record in season four with a loss at Troy. But Pinkel would get another chance, and he turned the next 11 seasons into:

96-48 record
9 bowl games (6-3 record)
5 division titles
5 10+ win seasons

So I'm definitely frustrated with Odom, and I'm not saying he's the next Gary Pinkel, but there are some notable parallels between their early careers at Mizzou that I found interesting.

I'm pretty pissed that he continually has his team unprepared, even when he has extra time to prepare.

The loss to Wyoming is completely deflating. Good luck filling the stadium for the next 5 games in a row. It just sucks.

I'm not quite ready to drink from the "fire barry odom" hose, because this season still has a long way to go. But, so does his coaching.

I want odom to be successful here because he has staying power that other coaches wouldn't. But man, losses like these make it really hard to pull for him too.

Fire Walters though. Do it.

When Pinkel came here, our total AD budget was around $15M-$20M. You can’t compare the two.

He was following Larry Smith, who had just shut down.

Ya lose me as soon as you start comparing what BO inherited to what GP inherited. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. The sky is falling crowd will talk about how dire things were after the team supported some dude who gained 20 pounds on a starvation diet, but the reality is that the programs were no where in the same spot.

Having said that, BO ain't getting fired. He'll win over 6 games this year and he'll be back next year.

How did the budget compare to the rest of the Big 12. Mizzou’s AD budget is near the bottom of the SEC.

Budgets have exploded since that time. If you want to make that comparison then it’s only fair to mention where our budget now ranks in the league we play in.

Odom was following a 5 win team that had one of the more detrimental events in our history happen during that season.

Plenty of things to point to here, but comparing their early tenures is fair.

What would be a better comparison is where do they go from here?

Lots of people wanted Pinkel fired at this point. They were wrong. Lots of people want Odom fired now. We’ll see if they are wrong or right.

Yes. But at the time, ours wasn’t even half of a team like Tennessee. We’re much closer to the pack now. And we didn’t lose to our conference this week. We lost to Wyoming.

Understood, but to use our current budget and paint it as advantageous is disingenuous.

Yes though, we should beat Wyoming. No doubt. It’s a terrible, terrible loss that should never happen.

Not much different than Pinkel losing to Troy in year 4. Or Leach losing to FCS teams to start year 4 and 5 at Wazzu

Maybe Odom needs to buy a pirate hat or a motorcycle?

This is dishonest shite. We just put up a $90M football facility and you’re pretending it’s not advantageous.

I agree. This isn't a blind defense of him or anything. I'm still frustrated about the preparation issues (0-7 vs FBS when 2+ weeks to prepare) or defensive issues (stats not needed...just watch them play)

I'm still on the "fire BO" train but I know it wont happen... I hope he proves me wrong so desperately.

A loss like that was deflating to us all, the people that care 10000x over... the average fan just loss interest which is what is really heart breaking. This was an "easy" transformation year where we get over the hump and the stadium starts selling out again... frick

he has time to make us all forget but man you better fricking hurry Odom - you better fricking hurry.

see you all in the stadium Saturday... we are in for a ride. MIZ.

Not sure if serious.....

If you are serious, that project vaulted our football player amenities up to around 9-10th in the SEC.

From the stadium aspect, it didn't really do anything for us. We needed something like what Louisville did for the stadium side. We went below average cheap.

We didn’t lose to Arkansas or Kentucky in the first game.

We lost to Wyoming. And we’ve lost to Purdue. And we’ve lost to Kentucky. And Middle Tennessee State.

You can’t play the “facilities advantage” card on teams we have the advantage over.

One thing to know is Gary Pinkel was not a rookie head coach when he took over the Missouri head coaching job. Barry Odom was a rookie head coach when he took over the Missouri head coach job. Two different coaches. One with experience and the other with no experience.
