Cuonzo is Barry Odom: Change My Mind

They both viewed coaching as their primary job. Not casting and selling a vision of what the program would be.
They both floundered with recruiting.
They are both uninspiring in a press conference. Bland, monotone answers.
They struggled with assistant hires.
They both were defensive specialists who didn’t figure out how to make an offense work.
They lost fan support.
Both were hired in part because of their connection to the school or area.
Both walked into unappealing positions and didn’t figure their way out of it.

Spot on 808, they were given a shitsandwich and they did not turn it into something palatable for fans, players nor recruits.

In fairness to Odom it was his first real go so you can say well he was a good DC but wasn't ready for the head coach job now (maybe ever, who knows).
There's really nothing to be said about Cuonzo other than the administration was desperate and backed the truck up in hopes it would be different this time. At least the administration said we hear you and are willing to spend the money to make this sport great. They struck out spectacularly in the end, but so is life.

I will still support CM, but my 98 percent support has gone down 50 percent to 48 percent.
Because Mizzou has a tough schedule this year he looks like he is in trouble, but if he turns this around I will still support him all the way. We need a coach like no other coach at Mizzou. A recruiter and a winner.

It's tough being a Mizzou fan. Watching teams like Baylor win championships hurts my soul a bit. They literally had teammates murdering each other and a systematic rape problem in recent memory. Meanwhile our program built a brand new arena and moved to the premier conference in college sports but we have trouble getting 3* kids to come play in Columbia somehow.
But what truly bothers me is how Odom did such an atrocious job recruiting during his tenure. That set us back a decade and erased the 15 years of work Pinkel did to turn our program around. We were putting 60,000+ in Faurot every week during his tenure, and now it feels like a struggle to get 40,000 fans to show up.

Don’t be spoiled. We won a conference championship in basketball as recently as 1994 and a conference championship in football as recently as 1969. Mizzou has had their share of success! Don’t get me started on all the national championships…

I thought Martin was a great hire and sad it has not worked out for him. He can't coach and if the Porter boys did not have the COMO connection he wouldn't have signed them, and likely would not have gotten Tillmon without the Porters. I gave up my 4 season tickets this year due to lack of interest, plus the fact that for most games I could get single game tickets, for as good or better seats, below face and without a donation. Speaking of which, the tickets are too expensive for the product they put out and the poor non-con opponents. The marketing people need to get the locals tickets for a reasonable price; people from KC and STL are just not going to travel for the non-weekend games. I spoke to an AD department official about 6 weeks ago about how season tickets were selling and the response was "we have plenty available". The empty seats tell the story and the AD simply can't financially stick with CM for another year. If there is any good news, the student section has been excellent so far for football and basketball.

While I agree more than I disagree with you. Make no mistake, Odom had a worse situation and while similar they really aren't comparable.
1 - The protests set the football program back further back than the basketball program.
2 - Odom got fired in a shorter period of time. I don't really know why Cuonzo has such a long leash.
3 - While I agree with the assistants, Odom's assistants did him a wrong and the best example - Heupel leaving the team high and dry before the Texas Bowl game. Dooley comes in second for just being a bad college offensive coordinator. Oh yeah, I did not forget the Craig Kuligowski situation, which was poorly handled by everyone, including Pinkel. Imagine, as a coach, starting your first season in the SEC with the entire SEC having your playbook.
4 - Odom didn't recruit well, but he did develop several NFL players that weren't 5 star recruits. I don't think Cuonzo does that well - correct me if I'm wrong.. And Michael Porter does not count.
5 - Speaking of recruits, he landed Kelly Bryant over Auburn but Kelly Bryant ruined the locker room on a stacked team that year. That was not Odom's fault, it was just bad luck.
6 - Odom did have a heated press conference and the team reacted positively after it. I think it was about him "turning around the program and that he was the guy for it".
Lastly, don't let my signature fool you. I don't believe he was perfect. I think he needed to drop his ego and work better with others - notably the administration and his own staff.
