Or is AI just being a mean-spirited smart arse ?

Based on discussions from early 2026, the primary excuses for Missouri baseball’s struggles in the SEC center on a significant resource gap and challenging competitive circumstances compared to other top-tier schools.

Here are the main factors contributing to the poor performance:

Lowest Budget in the SEC: Missouri consistently has the lowest baseball budget in the conference by a massive margin, leaving them underfunded compared to powerhouse competitors
.
Inadequate Facilities: Taylor Stadium is widely considered to be behind the standard of other SEC baseball venues, making it harder to attract high-level talent.

NIL Disparity: The program lacks the Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) funds available for baseball compared to other SEC programs.
Inconsistent Pitching: In SEC play, the team has struggled significantly on the mound, with low starter innings and a high ERA, particularly in the 2026 season.

Talent Gap: The "rich got richer" phenomenon in college baseball has left programs with fewer resources, like Mizzou, struggling to keep up with top-tier talent.

Competition and Climate: Competing in the deep SEC, combined with Missouri's weather, makes it difficult to consistently produce top-tier results

The program's only hope is that Tony V flames out in SF and returns to college. They need to throw the entire bag at him if he is let go.

Someone posted Arkansas’ Athletic Department’s revenue and expenses by sports.

They lose more in track and field/CC than is imaginable.

They generated like $6M in revenue for baseball and still lost $3-$4M.

There’s no reason for us to try to be competitive in that landscape, IMO. We could spend $2-3M more and not really close the gap at all.

Yep. They can completely shutter the baseball program at this point. I think it’s clear that the fanbase gives zero shits.

Yes, no baseball program makes money anymore spending has gotten so crazy. 5 years ago Arkansas, LSU and the other big dogs all made money (couple million at that), LSU generated $10M in revenue and won a natty last year and lost $11M for $1M in the hole. Miss State was worst in the SEC losing $4.2M. But it's about fan interest MSU and LSU have higher attendance for baseball than men's basketball and sell out every game.

Track at Arkansas sells out every home event and obviously wins a natty most years and produces Olympians.

You can search for Missouri's for every sport too it's all mandatory every year now.

Mizzou:
quote:

Overall, this contributed to the department's $9.1 million operating deficit (revenue ~$181.9M, expenses ~$191M).

Total Operating Revenue (selected sports):
Football: $58.68 million
Men’s basketball: $18.86 million
Volleyball: $0.81 million
Gymnastics: $0.78 million
Softball: $0.50 million
Women’s basketball: $0.38 million
Baseball: $0.32 million
Wrestling: $0.32 million
Soccer: $0.18 million
Women’s golf: $0.14 million

Total Operating Expenses (selected sports):
Football: $49.32 million
Men’s basketball: $14.35 million
Women’s basketball: $5.75 million
Baseball: $4.59 million
Softball: $3.66 million
Volleyball: $3.05 million
Women’s track & field/cross country: $2.84 million
Gymnastics: $2.69 million
Wrestling: $2.65 million
Men’s track & field/cross country: $2.50 million

Mizzou still spends a good chunk on baseball even though it's last in the SEC, but absolutely zero revenue. Kentucky is the closest to Mizzou spending $5.1 so not that far off really and KY has a solid program made Omaha a few years ago and in and out of the top 25 most years including this year so you don't really need to spend some crazy amount more.
