Corona Virus

A few years back the Corona Virus was called SARS. While it spread quickly, we were told that the real at risk group was the elderly because of the risk of developing pneumonia.
Today, I've noticed that the media is very careful to avoid the SARS description and has presented Corona as a much more menacing threat. I'm all for public health and safety, but it seems to me that we are overreacting a bit especially considering our experience with SARS not long ago. Just my opinion.

It's a new virus, not SARS. Having said that, I agree, the run on TP is stupid. Completely cancelling sports is stupid. Suspend things for a bit, be smart to avoid it getting out of control and keep living life.
This dumbass in St. Louis County whose daughter tested positive is a good example. Once you're told to quarantine because of it, fricking quarantine. Don't go to some dance because you're a selfish prick.
I'm not so worried about myself because I'm sure it would just come and go but if I pick it up and bring it home to my 70 year old father in law who just got out of the hospital with lung issues and is staying with us, it will be a death sentence for him. So keep playing the games and if I have a concern for someone I know, I will just not go. Problem is, too many dumbass dance dads out there who don't have the discipline to stay home.
ETA - I should say not the same strain.

I found the quick cancellation of the NCAA stuff to be ridiculous.
Why can spring sports not be played in the Summer when there is literally nothing else going on? Because the kids wouldn't be in school anymore? It's ridiculous.

Sars is Covid2
Corona is Covid19
They are different strains of Corona virus.
Sars (Covid2) is more lethal, in more age groups.
Corana (Covid19) is spreading MUCH faster, but is really only killing off people over 70 (you gotta go sometime). Damn there are a lot of old people in Italy.
The panic is stupid. The run on toilet paper is especially stupid. Shutting things down doesn't work at all unless it's done for months, and even then good hygiene works better (if you believe the CDC).

Better to overreact than under react
People not taking this seriously will be the greatest threat

Social distancing is actually the only thing that works.

SARS covid-2 is the virus
Covid-19 is the disease that results. An upper respiratory disease that can result in pneumonia in elderly and immune compromised individuals.
I find it interesting that the media used the virus name SARS with the original pandemic that originated in Toronto with people returning from China.
But now the media uses the disease name and is really fostering an overreaction imo. I believe if they used the virus name, SARS we would all be saying "so what." The original SARS pandemic passed without much fanfare.

there is a lot of naming going about. They are still two different strains. Technically the viruses themselves are called SARS-CoV (Sars) and SARS-CoV-2 (Corona). The rest is true, SARS-CoV is more lethal on a case by case basis but SARS-CoV-2 is killing more numbers because of how fast it spreads (but they still old).
For comparison measles spreads faster than CoV-2 and is more lethal CoV (on a full case basis) and we didn't freak out about that. We used to have measles parties for kids before vaccinations. And with the anti vaxxer nuts we may again
also SARS-CoV-2 is not a direct descendant of SARS-CoV, and made the jump into humans separately -- probably from bat soup if you believe fox news .

Just watching the scene at O'Hare with people standing in line for hours like sardines (coming back to beat the travel ban) is not going to end well for a lot of them. It's actually a small silver lining for St. Louis that were no longer a hub airport. O'Hare was an incubator yesterday.

That does not sound good. 5 feet of personal space and careful use of hand sanitizer can be quite effective

To all the fellow MU fans on this board - Stay safe. Good luck to you and your families. I wish you all the best.
To those convinced the push for social distancing is overblown, may I present a different way to look at it.
I have 2 people at home who fall in the "immune-suppressed" category. Going through a normal flu season is anxiety time at my house. The flu has put my daughter in the hospital for a week twice.
This coronavirus is more deadly than the flu. Therefore it is a big threat.
My family uses common sense. We practice good hygeine, We are avoiding big crowds. We have cancelled some fun plans (including a visit to our son at college) we had made to avoid big crowds.
That said, I live in an area full of chest beating idiots who are spouting every nonsense line they hear from the TV, radio, or morning coffee with their chest-beating friends. I live in an area full of idiots who send their kids to school sick on a regular basis because they don't want to be inconvenienced.
Please do not tell me and my family we are to trust the discipline and common sense of folks spouting off about how there is no threat, that this is just another cold virus, and that it is stupid to do anything different.
If you choose to believe any of that, fine. Just don't force your choice on other people or tell them there is nothing to worry about. There may be a little early panic thinking going on, yes. But quit arguing there is nothing to worry about, even if that is the case in your community.

I've been anti-social for years and not bc of pandemics but bc of the raging stupids and drama queens.
Do it my way

Good luck and Godspeed to you and your family Tiger97. Hopefully people will laugh at this in a few months and I invite them to tell me I was just paranoid.
The latest word from someone saying its not going to be that bad is 20% of the population gets it and fatal to .6%. That equals 384,000 deaths. Scary shite.
Be safe everyone.

Thanks. Appreciate that.
Life is precious. We need to do what we need to do to save every last person we can.

There should be a guide to good personal hygiene for everyone and it should be given to each person who are the head of the house hold. If none give it to all adults. This is also to tell the parents to teach their children the same thing. It is not that hard to do that and make sure schools in first grade and on to make sure the children are being informed of this guide to good personal hygiene. A simple pamphlet for each children in school as well one for parents. This will help a lot. The only problem is getting everyone to follow it every day.

I'm more concerned with my kids' schools teaching them proper grammar than hygiene.
