The smarter avenue is to give raises to the staff. They are the guys travelling to the schools and establishing the initial relationships with the players and their coaches. BO can get his raise after next year. Keeping Finley, Haley Elarbee, and Huepel should be the priority.

100% agree. Lock down assistants....Win.. Get above 500. then get a raise based on performance.

It doesn't make more sense to wait, because the extension will be mainly for recruiting purposes. Again, you don't change the buyout. So if you need to cut bait you can still easily do so, but when he goes into a living room and the kids mom says "Coach X told me you were getting fired". He can say "That's not true, I just signed a 4 yr extension"
It's optics more than anything else.

So let's pretend you're BO's agent. And it's your job to get the best deal for your client. You would recommend he sign a contract extension that still allows him to be fired with no additional buyout? Then what good is the extension, if only BO is taking the risk?
How bout BO finishes strong, wins the bowl game and Sterk finds more money to stabilize the assistants before a tough 2018 schedule. Let BO prove he can go through 1 season without losing staff, field a competitive team even with a challenging schedule, and solidify his recruiting chops, then his agent has ammo to negotiate an "earned" extension.

He's not taking any risk. He has a low buyout now.
He can sign an extension this offseason and he can also sign one next offseason.
He's getting one if he stays, which he's going to.

You are talking common sense.

Key word "earned"

How are you not seeing the problem with your proposal. BO signs a 4 year extension worth say 12 million with no additional buyout cost after the current contract. That means Sterk could fire him without cause during that 4 year period and owe him nothing.
The whole point of buyouts is to keep the school vested in the coach. No way in hell does any agent let his client sign an extension without a buyout schedule equal to that extension for him and his assistants.

I didn't say no buyout. I said you don't significantly change what his current buyout is. It's no different than the position he is now. It will be mostly superficial. He signed a show me contract when he was hired, he'd still be on that he just wouldn't be trying to recruit 4 yr players with 2 yrs left on his contract.
Why wouldn't he sign it? What leverage does he have?
I mean, it's going to happen. It's beneficial for everyone.

His buyout schedule is based on his contract. If fired after the season, his buyout should be around 4.7 million. (2 years x 2.35 million). If he is fired in 2018, the buyout should be 2.35 million. If fired in 2019 he is owed nothing. So if he signs an extension into say 2022 with no additional buyout then he works 2020,21,22 with nothing vested by the school. So he could be fired and owed nothing. Again, no agent lets him sign that deal.

Your numbers are off. His buyout is based on the base salary, not the full 2.3 million salary.

He signs an extension with the same buyout terms he has now, which are minuscule.
I'm not sure what you are missing here.
Again, he is going to sign an extension for recruiting purposes. Why in the world would he say no? It doesn't change his position at all.

Sterk will probably kick him some cash for keeping the ship off the reef. Boosting the assistant pool would be my priority. Google the game video and watch those guys on the SL. They are enjoying applying their craft for each other. That kind of cohesion wasn't there at all last year. I still think Finley and Haley have outstanding connections and need to be retained at any cost. Elarbee is going to be getting attention from other places as well.

Right, increasing the assistant pool would be the priority now. Keep the guys we have and we still need to hire two more full time coaches.

I believe Navy is right (although he should change his name to ARMY...)

Extensions are all about recruiting. It’s hard to recruit with less than 3 years left in a contract.
