Are we going to regret taking this large of a class?

Very happy with the class, no doubt.

But..

If the payoff for a great season comes a year later, and we're going to abide by that reasonable logic, I'd rather have more spots to give next year.

'15 looks loaded in state, would hate to miss out on some of these guys because they feel there is a logjam at their position.

People say QBs will transfer, but we have a Jr, a So, and two Freshman at the position, plus Zanders. Even if Hosick or Printz transferred we'd have enough without Zanders. It's unlikely any of them would transfer, Printz isn't going leave this year if he begins as number two, and Hosick and Berk aren't leaving. Would have rather left a gap so we could really roll out the red carpet for Lock.

Also, It's good to take guys that we know will pay off down the road. It's good to get a Texas kid, keeps that pipeline going. It's good to take a guy who has a really talented brother, makes it easier to recruit him. Good to take a guy from a hotbed high school or new recruiting area, should pay off down the road. I just feel like we might have taken too many of these kind of guys in one class.

Here is a ray of sunshine to counter the negativity. I have no idea how many scholarships we have for the '15 class, if it's at least 20 then taking a lot this year isn't that big of a deal.

If Mauk starts for the next 3 years, that leaves 3 years for Lock if he picks Mizzou. 2 years if he doesn't redshirt.

There is no logjam for Drew Lock at QB. The logjam blocks Hosick and Printz.

ST, I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought the same thing. Funny thing is, last year I wasn't happy that the class was so small. This year, I wonder if it's too big. I still can't get my head around the numbers because I currently have us way over, pending transfers, those that don't qualify and those processed.

Lock is a must IMO. I can't imagine Mizzou getting in on anyone bigger. Frankly, I could be dead wrong but as far as QB goes, I think Mauk will start the next 3 years. Berk will stay and play back up until he graduates. I think Printz will transfer when it becomes apparent it's Mauk's job because otherwise he will only have one year as starter. Hosick by all accounts wants to stay and wants to play QB. He'll be the next back up after Berkstresser. I love his athleticism but I don't see Zander playing QB. Lock comes in next year, red shirts Mauk's junior year, back up Mauk's senior year and his RS Freshman year and is ready to start his RS SO year. Talk about getting way ahead of myself, but that's how I would see it playing out.

I like MM a lot but the word on the street is our coaches are in love with Printz so I wouldn't necessarily assume that MM has the job for the next 3 yrs. Whoever is QB, we're in damn good shape!

Yep, if Printz is good enough to beat out Mauk, we're in damn good shape.

The backup QB is always everyone's favorite player on the team.

As far as the original question; No, these things always work themselves out. It's better to have too much than too little.

As far as QBs, were in the SEC! It's a meatgrinder. Look around!
USCe, Florida, Miss. St., UT, Mizzou, maybe more, all needed their backup QB and in some cases, their 3rd stringer.

Even if Mauk stays the starter, odds are pretty good Printz will see action.

Exactly, which is why I'm not counting on any transfers, which is why I'm not enamored with the decision to take Zanders in this class.

You always take a qb in every class, or at least that's what I've always been told. Zanders has huge upside, and turned out to be instrumental in recruiting. He's sort of Kim English-esque in his outlook and how he speaks. Seems like a great kid. I have no problems taking him, especially if he's a team player and wants to see the team succeed over personal gain. I do hunk some of these guys may eventually contribute in other positions.

The feeling is if he doesnt move up on the depth chart he would be open to a position change. Can play WR, or learn CB or Safety. He wants to take his shot at QB but will play where needed.

Yeah he does seem like a good kid, good comparison with Kim English, and I think usually you would always want to take a qb in every class, but if there was ever a year to not take one it would be this year, imo.

With 3 underclassmen qbs, a jr that will not transfer, and a must get stud in state qb a year away.

I guess I don't really care, I just really want Lock, as long as we get him it doesn't matter.

I hope he sticks around too but I just keep going back to his recruitment. Didn't he decommit from UCLA because they were bringing in another QB and were no longer telling him that he's the man? Just makes me wonder if he's "not the man" at Mizzou anymore, would he look to go elsewhere where he can "be the man". I could have the whole recruiting thing off though. Either way, it will work itself out and hopefully that includes getting Lock.

If Printz wants to be the starter, he should probably look elsewhere. It does not seem likely that he will beat out Mauk. I am perfectly happy with this scenario, both for Mizzou and for Printz.

It was more that a new coach came in and wanted a different QB, but didn't tell him this until late in the process, from what I remember. I don't think they withdrew his offer, more like suggested he reopen his recruitment and look elsewhere. So I don't think it was about him not being "the man", a much as Mora wanting his own guy.

Printz had a better spring and fall camp last year, plus Mauk doesn't have what I'd call a durable build, especially since being involved in the running game is a significant part of his style.

I'm not as down on Mauk as I used to be, he very well may be the starter, especially to start the season, but to take the stance you've taken omits a lot of relevant info on the matter.

I agree, ST, you make some good points about Mauk. He's a player for sure, but this spring will be very interesting.
