That td pass Mauk made in the Cotton Bowl, the one that went just over the db and into our wr's hands was amazing, not that he hadn't done amazing things before that, but I was finally sold that he could be special.

That said, yeah, I'm looking forward to spring because Printz may be really good too and think he's been written off by too many fans.

plus Mauk doesn't have what I'd call a durable build, especially since being involved in the running game is a significant part of his style.
I too am pleased that Mauk is a dual threat QB.

I'm not as down on Mauk as I used to be, he very well may be the starter, especially to start the season,

but to take the stance you've taken omits a lot of relevant info on the matter.
Mauk will be the starter next year. Bookmark it.

I'd guess Mauk will be the starter to begin the season too.

Doesn't change the fact that Printz shouldn't transfer, which is what you suggested.

If I was the number two qb behind Mauk, I'd stay put. Any qb is a hit away from being injured, but with Mauk's build and style he's more susceptible than most.

If I thought I had #1 stuff, I'd go somewhere I would be the #1, but hey that's just me.

If I outplayed a guy in both camps, and felt like he was a high injury risk I'd wait it out and see if I got an opportunity before transferring and having to sit out a year.

All these qb's get to campus a semester early and stay year round, which is why there are more of them graduating at the end of their red shirt sophomore year and transferring without needing to miss a year. It's likely Printz will stay until the end of his red shirt sophomore year regardless of who is named starter next fall.

Let's consider his options at that point.

1. Mauk goes pro after his junior season. Printz is likely the next guy in line unless the Tigers get a Drew Lock type recruit. Lock would have taken a red shirt and would have 4 years of eligibility left. Printz would be down to 2.

2. Mauk stays for his senior season. Printz is relegated to back up during his junior season. Lock, if he is on the team, is groomed to take over after Mauk graduates. Lock will have 3 years of eligibility left. Printz is down to 1.

If Mauk is going to go pro after his junior year, then I can see Printz staying. If Mauk sticks around for his senior year (a much more likely scenario), I can't see Printz burning another year of eligibility to play backup just to lose the starting position next year to Drew Lock. But hey, maybe Printz doesn't actually have the competitive drive that I've heard he has.

Eeeee..

This was an odd exchange.

I have no idea where that last response came from.

You seem to think Printz is going to be content to play backup to the Maty Mauk show for the next 3 years. I think Printz will transfer out.

Printz good (or so I've been told, I don't know that anyone has actually seen him play college football yet) but let's not make him out to be the next Daniel just yet.

You seem really passionate about this issue, and down on Printz. People don't have to have the same opinions, and it doesn't mean someone is wrong.

I'm not down on Printz. I'm being realistic. Printz has never played a down of college football. He threw maybe 3 passes in the spring game.

Mauk won 3 games in the SEC this year. He threw a touchdown in the SEC championship game.

Mauk is going to win the starting job, and it might not be because he's better. It might just be because he's more experienced.

I think Printz will end up beating out Mauk at some point next year, the fact he outplayed him in both camps last year helps me come to that conclusion. That's beside the point, though.

You seem to have missed two parts.

One, Mauk is a high injury risk player with his body type and play style in the SEC. Printz remaining his back up would be wiser than transferring, it has nothing to do with being content or lacking competitiveness.

Two, it doesn't make a ton of sense to transfer if you're the number 2 qb, especially under the conditions I just explained. It makes more sense to wait it out and see if you get an opportunity and transfer after your RS SO year when you can play immediately. With these qb's getting on campus a semester early and staying year round it's becoming more the norm for them to graduate after their RS SO year making them eligible to transfer without a penalty.

You keep saying this. But the funny thing is, this is not how I remember the reporting during camp time.

I just explained how I think he will transfer after his redshirt sophomore season (Mauk's junior season) because he won't want to play backup to Mauk for another season.

I can agree with this. Experience is a key piece here.

That said, I don't think he'll walk away with the job easily, and that's good. I think we want healthy competition there. Bottom line, Pinkel has said it's an open competition this spring, so we'll get to see it play out.

It's irrelevant because this isn't about who's better, Printz or Mauk. It's about why Printz should't transfer even if Mauk is named starter in the fall. But back to camp stats, the way I remember it is Printz was almost perfect with his completion rate, while Mauk was making turnovers in the air and with fumbles, and we saw that side of Mauk in the games he played.

I've already said I expect Mauk to begin the season as the starter, the reasons you mentioned are why I agree he'll likely start.
