At this point I treat the state theatre being successful like us beating LSU.
There was a giant Main Street fight after some local Hip Hop show there prior to the closure. Crowd brawl. moved all the way up through the intersection in the middle of main street.

ABC has a person in charged and has made the bar owners life a living hell.
Basically said 2013 is the year of the ABC.
So, whoever is under age needs to watch out.
They have even busted bars after closing hours for workers having a beer while cleaning up. That was over 21.

I hardly go out to the bars anymore and when I do I get drunk before I go so I can go in under 21 and not have to worry about anything.
I hate even buying beer in Starkville because I have had some friends buy beer, leave the gas station and the ABC followed them back to their apt and asked for their ID's and gave them MIP's. It is such fricking bullshite

It should have been like this decades ago.

What I wish would happen(but it would take many years) is for us to build up bars on University Drive immediately where campus ends.
This is what needs to happen.

That pos gas station happens to have an honest "shade tree mechanic" type in there.
This is what's wrong with Starkville. I'm sure he's a good guy and does good work. That's not the issue here. We need to build up something special in Starkville, something we obviously lack. The City needs to make better decisions about allowing what goes where, e. g. Title Loan Store where there was Ruby Tuesday's on HWY 12.
He can be that fine, hardworking mechanic one block over. The laundry mat will be fine one block over. Sacrifices need to be made.

Right. There are plenty of empty service buildings along 182 those people could buy for their business and then knock down those eyesores on University and build bars/restaurants.

Couple of things.
No.1, Stagger Inn got caught drinking after hours. This is a stupid rule and it was employees but none the less, after closing time, if you have alcohol out, they'll get you!
2nd. The State Theater location will be very tough to make it work. First the lack of parking, you have space for 800 and parking for 40. Also, over the years, as every new "owner" has leased the space they have renovated and added to the note. In other words, the lease is now too high to actually cash flow. Starkville bars have been in a pricing war for 20 years now. Its very difficult to get more than $3 for well drinks and $2 for a beer. With that being said, from what I understand, the lease payment would be well over $10,000 a month. That means you would have to gross $30,000 per month in sales just to pay the lease. Thats no electricity, staff, bands, security, advertising, licenses, etc... Folks, those kind of sales figures aren't gonna happen in Starkville at $3 a pop. Maybe a few months of the year when we have multiple home football games, but not 12 months a year. So the only way to make it cash flow is if somnebody can afford to pay cash for the space with no debt. Then they would have a fighters chance to at least break even over the first 8-10 years. Understanding that, how many people are willing to risk 1.5 million cash just to break even after 8 years? I'm sure many others will try and lease it over the next several years but in reality they won't make it either.

False. There is an entire main street of closed businesses at night. Park and walk two blocks. shite. A lot of people riding the shuttles as well.
Nice post though. Good info. Thanks.

Correct on basically everything dealing with the lease. That's the part that throws the entire operation into a tailspin.
All it really needs is someone to come in and BUY the joint and start fresh running it themselves. In that business model, it could be incredibly profitable.
You can buy "cheap" beer in Oxford too. But everyone still goes to the Library and spends their life away. There is a reason for that -- and it's an ingenious business model. You realize many of the women that go there regularly are carefully recruited by ownership/management -- they barely pay for drinks and have VIP cards to get in free right? Control the women that control the other women -- and you control the entire market -- and the guys will pay WHATEVER it costs to be in that place...

Truth. And State theatre would make it if they incorporated a good restaurant in it for the day hours and made it a bar at night with good bands and a 5 dollar cover and then good drink specials during the week.
The lack of Mugshots being a bar anymore gives you ample opportunity to take advantage of the downtown area.

I miss the bistro so damn bad. It was a true gem. You could watch sports on the big screen, music in the theatre, grab a table up front, sit at the upstairs bar, sit on the upstairs balcony, sit in the inside balcony with a few friends. It had so many different areas if you didn't wanna be around a certain crowd. I had friends on the staff that would let me in the back/upstairs entrance. It was the best bar I have been to in Starkville. It will never be the same.

I liked Mugshots food, but stopped going because the bar at night made it smell like vomit during the day.
