This is a good point about Spurrier, and one that I have also tried to point out even prior to this season starting.
I think this game against South Carolina, and stretch against USC, aTm, and Bama, will tell us a lot about Mullen.
If we win one, and play close games during the stretch I think we can be ok moving forward, with a chance to win the egg bowl as always.
If we lose, and lose bad in those three games, I think that it won't be just a "down year" with "young players".
If we do well for the last 5 games, I think we can still ride Mullen into next year. With next year's schedule I don't see anything less than 8 regular season wins (I actually believe that in year 6 with a good schedule we should be closer to 10) as acceptable.
If we shite the bed for the last 5 games of the season there will be nothing that is acceptable short of firing Mullen.
If we're going to make the jump from mediocre to good or great next year is the year to win 10. Whatever method you chose, keeping Mullen or not, this team next year should be better than a little above average.

He's losing them by the day too.. Already has about 80% women only retweeting him and congratulating on FB after near loss victories..

This is good.
All Dan talked about was raised expectations. He knows more than anyone what the stakes are.

I've heard stories of Mullen forgetting names of people that have given hundreds of thousands and millions to his program while face to face with those people. Probably people that Hud sends Christmas cards already and asks about their kids by name(not even exaggerating on this).
I have no idea how you would know this (Not saying you don't) but if it's true...
ETA:
Engie, with what you are constantly saying about knowing where the money people sit with Mullen, after the offseason you could either look like you are a genius or a ginormous jackass.

I'm close friends with a guy that's got skyboxes for football and baseball. He's not what I would call a Cigar Boy yet -- but he has regular interaction with them, gets invited to the big football social events, is included in their email chain, etc...I'm telling you what I'm being told by him -- which is aligning with what I'm hearing elsewhere. He still supports Mullen as our coach fwiw and is pissed at what he sees as undermining his success...

How so? I haven't made any claims about what's actually going to happen. I'm telling you the opinions of a faction of our decision-makers at this time. Alot can change between now and November. Mullen could beat somebody and get us to 6, etc...
As of right now, Stricklin and Keenum are still 100% behind Mullen and there's a power struggle that's been going on for awhile playing itself out here. Seems to all be coming to a head soon, but that's strictly my opinion...

Cigar boys worry about the product on the field and what is going on around the program. There may be some stories floating around that Mullen isn't good with names, but seriously... WTF.
Let's suppose Saban can't remember the names of all 4,000 people in the box seats at Bryant-Denny. Do you think anyone that supports the program would actually give a frick?

I wish. I still can't even justify the $$ for club level -- have just met and become friends with a few of the right crowd through a variety of dumb luck circumstances.

It's not about remembering 4000. It's about remembering the top 100 or so, and making them think you appreciate their sacrifices and contributions. The head coach is still a salesman at MSU. If Saban can't do this, he's still Saban. If he was underperforming, his shtick would grow old quick too. Mullen is a proven shitty salesman in recruiting -- why wouldn't he be a shitty salesman in what's essentially marketing?
Saban is driving a Ferrari that was already built before he arrived. He's not pinching pennies trying to buy a Corvette, which is what we are doing...

Wilson and Smith and earlier Torbush were all forced out for the most part, everyone else was replaced only because they voluntarily left.

It's Allyn, and I am not a cigar boy, but I do know some of them, and I will ask them if Mullen knows them and remembers their name. That should be fun.
I learned early on in CEO school that you should just introduce yourself anyway and don't just assume that people know who your are.
Hi, Eric Stratton, rush chairman. Damn glad to meet you.

Engie, bro, I'm not disagreeing with you or saying you don't actually know what you're saying you know. However I will say this: If Dan Mullen can't remember the names of the people that are most important to his job then his is a complete dumbass, or one of the most arrogant people on the face of the planet.
Like I've said numerous times before, if Mullen shows life in the last 5 games and doesn't get blown out in them, he stays.
If he shits the bed in all 5 and gets blown out in more than 2, his arse better be fricking grass.

Hard to imagine him being fired after this year unless State loses out. Med school roommate is a big State donor and he is realistic about Mullen as well and thinks he will be around with Dak next year, which will be an important year for him. Mullen's personality definitely doesn't seem to translate well here with the fans, big boosters and sometimes recruits. My friend, myself (grew up State fan) and all our State friends have certainly waned on Mullen due to his crowing and his lack of discipline and development of players. Hope he turns it around..

You are talking about a guy that was shown that an immobile QB WOULD NOT WORK in this offense -- by his mentor who has 2 undefeated seasons to go along with 2 national titles(Brantley/Meyer) -- and he would have still spent 2 years trying to force the issue had Russell stayed healthy. There are numerous other examples saying that he's very likely to be that arrogant.

Agreed. In my "thoughts" here, I'm projecting what I expect to happen. Hence why there are no absolutes -- because he DOES still have time to right the ship. If he plays Carolina and aTm well, shows fight against Bama, beats Arky, and we play well/with heart in the Egg Bowl regardless of outcome, myself and most here will have to double think our positions even if it ultimately leaves us 5-7.
That said, I have only seen relentless effort for 6 halves in the past 20 games(Troy this year, last half of MTSU last year). That's incredibly disconcerting to me -- and I've got no reason to expect sudden change now although I still have hope that it will.

This is my feelings on the last 5 games as well.

quote:Not I. I have met a few by way of where I stay up there. But, the ones I know don't talk about stuff like this except in small groups and probably only with other high dollar givers. But, I have not tried to find out what they are thinking because quite frankly, I wouldn't give a dime toward a buyout and I would not be hypocritical in demanding something that I didn't have enough desire to see it happen as to donate toward it.
