UKAthletics.com Post Game Quotes from Stoops and Players

quote:

COACH STOOPS: Disappointed. Disappointed with the loss. I was proud of our guys' effort. I felt like we fought, played tough at times, had our opportunities. Disappointed that we didn't make the plays when we needed to.

Give credit to Louisville. They made the plays when they needed to. So that's where we're at.

We're going to continue to fight and get better. I thought we made some improvement in certain areas and we need to keep on working and keep on grinding.

quote:

Q. Was it a little shocking to come out and play that well on defense, maybe think it's going to give you a chance to hang around, the offense can't make a play?

COACH STOOPS: I was proud of the stops. I felt like we had a good plan. I felt like our guys were starting to play more aggressive, make them earn their yards. Had a few wrinkles here and there.

But overall, yeah, I was happy with the effort. It was disappointing that we had a couple turnovers. We had the ball down there even at the end of the first half. We had our opportunities. We needed to score. Going into that game, you know you're going to need to score some points.

quote:

Q. Maxwell Smith's status?

COACH STOOPS: I'm not sure of Max's status right now. He got banged up. Banged up his shoulder. We'll see where it's at.

quote:

Q. How would you evaluate Jalen (Whitlow)?

COACH STOOPS: Jalen did some good things and obviously made some critical errors. He's not unlike a lot of our players. It's hard to swallow when you're the quarterback and he's very visible. He can't afford to make those mistakes. We need to get that corrected.

I thought he did some good things. He stepped up. We had to go with him for a good portion of the game. He gave us a chance. Again, we got to play better around him, as well.

Q. Reese (Phillips) was warming up a little bit.

COACH STOOPS: We were into the next guy. If he got banged up, we would have had to go to the next guy.

Q. What would have been the preference there if Max was out?

COACH STOOPS: We would have went with Patrick (Towles).

quote:

#1, Ryan Timmons, WR

On whether there was a reason for more drops this week...
"No, not really. It was just lack of focus. We had a good week of practice. Those dropped balls, we make in practice. Like I said, we have to try to be more consistent from practice into the game."

quote:

#11, Maxwell Smith, QB

On his injury ...
"Well I could throw the ball but I didn't have enough velocity on it. When it happened I threw another pass in the series it just kind of died on me and didn't have velocity. I just felt like I wasn't the best choice for the team"

Also there's a lot of talk about Kentucky's 0-13 on 3rd down. Frankly, that's a damn awful statistic. But I don't think it's necessarily a play-calling issue as much as it's a execution issue. This is basically how they broke down:

3rd and 4: Sanders rushed for three yards.

3rd and 1: Whitlow fumble.

3rd and 10: Max Smith incomplete pass to Sanders.

3rd and 14: George rushed for nine yards.

3rd and 6: Max Smith incomplete pass to Montgomery.

3rd and 1: George rushed for zero yards.

3rd and 3: Sanders rushed for -2 yards. I think this is the one where the lineman just let the guy through into the backfield completely unblocked as well.

3rd and 5: Max Smith incomplete pass to Blue.

3rd and 9: Whitlow pass to Kendrick intercepted.

3rd and 4: Whitlow incomplete pass to Badet.

3rd and 9: Whitlow pass to Shields for seven yards.

3rd and 13: Whitlow incomplete pass to Kemp.

3rd and 10: Whitlow incomplete pass to Shields.

ETA: To go a little further on that, required yardage to achieve the 1st down while on 3rd was almost on average 7 yards. That's a hell of a position to put your offense in after 1st and 2nd down, especially one that's struggling.

Forgot the super glue? Really you guys would have won the game easily if this could have been corrected.

I agree. If we have any offense, and most of these drops were caught, we likely are in the game with a chance to win at the end. UK really did outplay UL overall, but our offensive output was putrid in the 1st 3 quarters.

I watched nearly the entire UK game, and I can't help but be very impressed with how they looked. The record is going to look bad at the end of this year, but as a team, you've definitely already improved, and you're building your program the right way: on defense. The offense will come eventually, but if you don't build around a defense, your program isn't going to go too far. I was very impressed with the defensive positioning yesterday. Stoops seems like he's building a program very similar to the way Franklin is at Vanderbilt. It might not happen next year even, but Kentucky will win some games under Stoops. What happened in the second half is merely an issue of depth and a lack of long-offensive drives. The depth will come only with time, and the offense should improve as you get some players to run the system. Overall, I just have to say congrats- you guys are really looking like you have a good future
