I actually think banning regular posters is a bad thing. Ban alters, sure, but banning normal posters for flaming, being offensive, etc... just prevents the board from having a true representation of it's posters

Or shorter timed ban. Sometimes some of us need a break for a day or so.

the last few times I've been banned if i had gotten a pm saying to cool it I would have stopped.

As suggested, make all new posters have at least 100 posts before they are allowed to create a thread. This would help cut down on the number of threads created for unimaginative trolling.
Have an ignore feature that would allow you to basically block seeing the posts of someone that sucks.

There's another board I frequent that has a pretty good method for discouraging new posters, and I think it could work here. Noobs have to enter a bunch of codes before they can submit a post. Like when you're shopping online and you have to match the text in the box.
It gets really annoying and a lot of times a person won't go through the trouble of entering the codes because it's such a hassle, thus preventing a noob post.

yup and has been mentioned with the obvious answer you provided numerous times. it's not rocket science, just common sense.
you'd think these people would realize chicken and his minions have already thought of most, if not all, of the ideas they bring up here. and it has probably been discussed ad nauseum before since this place has been going since 2003

Possibly, but that would throw up a red flag ( a bunch of shite posting) that would allow the admins to ban hammer someone. A lot of message boards use this feature, hell it's worth a shot.

That might work too.
This wouldn't get rid of the current trolls, but it would damn sure discourage new ones and/or people who have been banned and then make a new screenname for the purpose of trolling.
