2017:
I thought our pass coverage was pretty good. Especially starting 2 true freshman.
Surprisingly Red Zone offense was really good. 3rd in the nation. However on only 31 attempts.
4th down conversion was top 10 but that is from being shitty on 3rd down
NCAA stats
2018 strengths:
Pass coverage should improve.
If OL improves, UF has a stable of running backs. 6 deep. All talented and worthy of being SEC RBs.
Playmakers on the outside: Toney has proven that he is a dynamic WR and can make defenders miss. Watkins and Copeland appear to be similar but bigger and more durable. Clement may also fit in this role with the log jam at RB. Whoever the QB will be, easy screen passes will help get the ball out of the QBs hands.

Sad thing it is not far off.

They gave up 16 TD vs 14 INT, at 7.96 yards per attempt. They were #73 in PE defense and in the bottom quarter in YPA given up.
We could be nice and call it mediocre instead of a weakness I guess.
Their 30 red zone scores put them in the bottom 25% of the country as well. Their 21 red zone touchdowns was one of the worst in the country as well, although their TD percentage was slightly above average, so there is that I guess.
2018:
I don't know how much the pass coverage will improve. Wilson and CJ are good, but that's only two guys. The safeties are all a liability at this point and they don't have anyone else to place corner. Any injuries to those two and things go downhill quickly.
UF has good running backs. No doubt. If I was listing position groups I would call that a strength. But the OL is shite. They couldn't run block my dead grandmother. If that doesn't change the RB's can only do so much.
Toney can make people miss, but only if you hand him the ball. He isn't the best route runner yet, so your options are throw it to him standing still, hand it off, or snap it to him. The only guy on the roster, currently, who can consistently get open on his own is Cleveland, which is why the offense tanked as soon as he got hurt. The only other decent WR based on recent production is Hammond, and he is much more hit or miss than Cleveland. Hopefully the new additions make an immediate impact.
I think, with the make up of this team though, you will see the return of the Zaunbrecher screen-you-to-death offense.

When we say ''good/bad'', obviously this is when put under the lens of what we think should happen.
The offense was missing (by the Georgia game) at least 13 players with many of them being starters. The defense was missing 9, with the majority of being starters.
By the end of the year, Gardner had improved drastically and the other safeties (backups to the backups) seemed to finally find their head as well.
QB - Awful. Worst position on the team (and that's saying something).
RB - Good, did their job to the best of their ability.
WR - Good until injured. Cleveland and Toney did their job, the other guys were bad.
TE - Neither, didn't get utilized as they should so we don't know.
OL - One could argue that blocking for a blind man limited by predictible playcalling hindered us from actually judging them on quality merits. They were in the right position almost all the time and the QB and subsequent playcalling just crushed them.
DL - Good, but hamstrung by injuries.
LB - Good, but hamstrung by injuries. -- A lot of people will disagree, but when we have 4 guys on scholarship with 3 playing the entire game, fatigue will set on.
CB - Good, best on defense.
Safety - Bad. Just really bad, but to be expected with all of the injuries.
2018
QB - .......Better?
RB - Good
WR - Way better.
TE - Probably good.
OL - Solid, but will be learning a new skillset.
DL - Solid, but no idea how solid.
LB - Better, much better.
CB - About the same, but still DBU level.
Safety - Please god better.
I think the team will be improved head to toe, if only by the experienced gained in 2017 but I think Mullen is far and beyond a better HC than McElwain because he actually has SEC experience and has been coaching a team with infinitely less talent than what he's stumbled into.

Add in returns on punts/kickoffs. A ton of mental and physical errors.
2018 should see improvement in a lot of offensive areas. WRs of course, RBs ditto, OL should be improved. But will we have superior QB play?
Defense should be stout.
Special teams needs to be much better in coverage and returns.

Biggest strengths
Shutting down the other teams top receiver. Marco is a stud. Will be first team all conference.
Running the ball...our RB core is as loaded as it has been in a long time. Scarlett and Davis are a monster 1-2 punch add in a mobile QB in Jones...our run game will be quite nasty
Screens - I bet we run 8-10 WR screens a game to Toney/Watkins/Massey
Pass rushing
Weaknesses
Strong run games will eat us up.
Safety...nightmare position
QB is an obvious unknown. We finally have good QB coaching at least.
The rest is wait and see.

Best thing about us learning a new system is they didn't know much about the last one...

I think we will be a good team, but get beat down by very good teams.
Georgia will shell shock the hell out of us with their Oline and run game.
Luckily...that is literally the only very good team we face next year. We will be in every game other than that.
People forget how much coaching means in CFB. A good coach can bring change quickly.
I think we could be anywhere from 10-2 to 7-5. Just based on roster right now, any strong run game will be a nightmare. But we will also be able to run the ball on most teams. Don't underestimate just how good our running back group is and how valuable the offensive line having a very good developer and a real training program will be. Remember how good Taylor was, then regressed? That's because of coaching. Remember Ivey? He was amazing his first year, then regressed. Both have natural talent, but coaching and developing stopped their growth.
Basically the only success stories were the incredibly hard workers like Bryan and Toney types that defied odds. We have had so many really good players not develop the last few years. I expect improvement from most players simply because of the weight program this year. No way we can be in worse shape than we were in the fourth quarter of games last year.

Watch the videos of the 2006 & 08 teams and you will see some pretty good play calling. Jailhouse screens, flanker reverses, misdirection plays etc etc.
Get blockers in front of our RBs/WRs and let them break some games open. As long as we execute...good things a coming.

This is the key. Blocking down field. Both from the receivers and the Oline getting out. We had such athletic lineman in the Urban days.

I agree with all the above. One thing not mentioned, with Piniero and Townsend leaving, I foresee many more missed FGs and shanked/blocked punts. Hope I’m wrong.
If Scarlett is back, we’re stout in the running game. His yards after contact have to be huge based on the games I saw him in

Strengths by position:
RB, WR, CB, DL
Weaknesses:
QB, LB
Not sure:
OL, TE, Safety, K, P
I expect the team to be better because there’s way more structure in the program now. How much better, I’m not really sure. I do think Dan and his staff are a major upgrade and can get above average results year 1. Too many mysteries at this time, will know more after Spring ball.

We are bringing in the nation's best kicker out of high school and Townsend's brother is supposedly every bit as good as he was....so I don't think we fall back too much in that regard

Austin Hardin was the top kicker out of HS. BIWISI

Yes, even more BIWISI on Townsend's lil bro being as good as him.
