Austin Armstrong is replacing Toney as DC. Southern Miss DC last year and just joined Saban as Bama's ILB coach

I would of liked someone more proven but the new DC sounds pretty good.

Armstrong last served as the defensive coordinator at Southern Miss from 2021-22. In his first season, he was the youngest defensive coordinator in the country. The Golden Eagles ranked 42nd nationally in total defense (357.8 ypg), finishing 18 spots higher than the previous season. This past year, the total defense average dropped to 371.5 yards per game, but USM led the Sun Belt in sacks (44) and tackles for loss (109) and was second in interceptions (17).

Per his southern miss profile:

"As the youngest defensive coordinator in the country during his first season of overseeing the Nasty Bunch, the Golden Eagles ranked No. 42 nationally in total defense (385.5) besting their mark by 18 spots in the country from the season before. His defense also ranked in the Top 10 in the country in first downs allowed (No. 2), fumbles recovered (No. 4), red zone defense (No. 6), defensive touchdowns (No. 7) and also ranked No. 15 in turnovers gained and No. 24 in passing yards allowed."

IDK why, but his resume makes me think of Geoff Collins, who did a fine job in 2015-16 as DC. Probably the last truly great defense we've seen.

2018 was okay. 2019 did good against cupcakes and Auburn, but the cracks were starting to show in 2019.

It appears to be a high risk, high reward defense. We will probably give up some big plays but the QBs won't be sitting back and picking us apart.

If we can play some press man and stop a counter, that's improvement.

I believe we have good enough corners to do this, worry a little about the safeties.

Plenty of playing time for all of them.
