There were smiles all around as Florida’s players left the field Saturday in sweat-soaked orange jerseys and slapped hands with fans. It was only Colorado State, but after the way these same players felt coming off the same field a week ago it was a necessary tonic.

Nobody enjoyed the caffeine-less jolt more than Dan Mullen.

Because it was another game filled with teachable moments, this one not ending in crushing defeat.

That’s really what this season is all about, building through teaching, no matter how painful it can sometimes be.

So even when Feleipe Franks starts 0-for-6 with a pick, Mullen doesn’t give him the quick hook no matter how loud the noise in the system gets.

“He did complete one,” Mullen joked after the game.

While there may have been boos cascading down a baking Swamp after one failed series, it’s pretty clear this is Mullen’s guy sink or swim. The personal foul penalty was dumb, and Mullen let his quarterback have it. But the interception, the missed reads, the poor throws, they are all part of it.

“He doesn’t have a short leash,” Mullen said.

I still don’t think this team is very good or at least as good as I thought it would be. It struggled to run the ball until the fourth quarter except for Jordan Scarlett’s 30-yard score against a blitz. It still has a banged up secondary, and it still misses David Reese terribly.

But you do see little signs of progress.

Like Freddie Swain. The receiver from North Marion High obviously has a knack for running back punts. His 85-yarder was a thing of beauty.

His timing was just a little off. Swain told Mullen near the end of the third quarter he was going to run one back so there was no need to get a play ready. That kick went out of bounds.

The next one was the highlight of a special teams highlight reel Saturday.

“It was actually safe (meaning Florida wasn’t setting up a return and was looking for a possible fake),” Swain said. “You just have to catch the ball and make a move.”

If Franks isn't on a short leash then that tells you what you need to know about what Mullen thinks of Trask

Sorry Straws

Dont bother, man. His twitter is full blown anti Franks and there's no coming back.

Franks could go 21-25 for 275 with 4 tds this Saturday and it would be
1. It's only Tennessee
2. Let's talk about the 4 that he missed
3. It's only a 13 ypp avg

Ive never seen Straws like this. If I didnt know better Id think he caught his girl with a Franks pic in her purse, seems personal.

1. The only two that matter are the top 2.
2. Stats this early in the year are generally hard to assess because of competition.
3. Joe burrow is low on this list but led a come from behind win at auburn. Could franks do that?
4. Qb play is more complex than a stat line. Franks isn’t the 7th best qb in the conference by a wide margin.

Im not sold on Burrows either. LSU wins because of defense. And Usually the run game...but this year it isn't the same except for Brosette (sp)...nothing jumps out at you like years past. But you have to give them credit for winning on the plains...a tough place to travel to and leave with a W.

When was the last time a uf qb won at auburn? Burrows isn’t that good but uf is probably 3-0 if he’s the qb.

Dude stop it. Burrow couldn't have won a game with a absolutely horrendous soft defense and worse OL.

LSU beat AU because of their defense. All Burrows had to do was not lose it. Totally different than our game with UK.

Coming in to do a quick bandit hit and run.

Whew lad. LSU gives up 21 points to Auburn's offense and they win 22 - 21, but they won because of their defense.

Florida gives up 21 points but they LOST because of their defense.

Sounds like bullshite to me, reel.

Reel - I totally disagree on Burrows. The guy was getting very little help from his OL, he was under pressure constantly. He was a man, stepped into the pocket, and especially on that last drive hit some huge plays. He also hit a bunch of big 3rd down conversions early AND late.

LSU loses that game with Franks at QB. I have no problem saying that. 100% believe it.

The long TD pass to Derrick Dillon Franks probably never even attempts because he runs out of the pocket and the two big conversions on 3rd and 4th down in the final drive I'm not sure if Franks makes either of them because it would require him to sit still in the pocket.

Straws -

The LSU defense only gave up 330 yards and 21 points. To Auburn. A good team. You take that performance against a good Auburn team any chance you can get. They certainly helped the team win.

UF on the other hand gave up over 300 yards rushing including a bunch of key 3rd down conversions and over 500 yards of offense to an unranked Kentucky team. The defense came through with some turnovers to keep it close, but the defense did NOT do it's job against Kentucky and is just as much to blame for that loss as Franks.

I never said Franks was the only reason, but do you think the outcome is the same if Burrows and Franks switch places?

I don't.

Of course, the outcome is also different if we change the entire defense.

So what's more practical, changing an entire defense or one player from the offense? I just wanted to show reel how ridiculous it is to blame a defense for 21 points (us) and give them enormous credit for the same amount of points. It's intellectually dishonest.

Straws is a broken record and has gone over the deep end. He thinks he knows more than Mullen and Trask is better. Get over it man.

Franks has 5 of his 9 touchdowns against an FCS.

Let's recheck this thread after he plays MSST, UGA and other difficult teams.

Using his FCS padded stats is kind of a joke while not talking about how he only had 119 yards against a team that on average gives up 300.

We haven't played a real defense yet and he's still passing for less than 50% against FBS teams.

He played Miami and Auburn**.

We played Kentucky and Colorado State.

Do you really think those are comparable? You guys are still drunk on the CHSU game. We're about to go to Tennessee with a QB who has >50% of his passes completed against two of our weaker teams on the schedule.

CHSU
Idaho
FSU
CSU
South Carolina/Missouri/Kentucky/Tennessee/Vanderbilt
LSU
MSST
UGA

If Franks is hitting >50% of his passes against some of the worst FBS defenses we've played, what gives you any semblance of hope for the best?

Exactly, he's played 2 teams with a pulse, has less than 50% completions with 1 td and has only 2 against a team they should steamroll. You bag Franks for this..........
