For what it's worth, it took Dabo Swinney 8.5 years to win a national title at Clemson

We could be in the same boat, or Mullen is the Lloyd Carr type.

for some perspective:

Year Team Overall Conference Standing Bowl/playoffs Coaches# AP°
2008 Clemson 4–3[A 1] 3–2 T–3rd (Atlantic) L Gator <<<<< Took over midseason
2009 Clemson 9–5 6–2 1st (Atlantic) W Music City 24
2010 Clemson 6–7 4–4 T–4th (Atlantic) L Meineke Car Care
2011 Clemson 10–4 6–2 1st (Atlantic) L Orange† 22 22
2012 Clemson 11–2 7–1 T–1st (Atlantic) W Chick-fil-A 9 11
2013 Clemson 11–2 7–1 2nd (Atlantic) W Orange† 7 8
2014 Clemson 10–3 6–2 2nd (Atlantic) W Russell Athletic 15 15
2015 Clemson 14–1 8–0 1st (Atlantic) W Orange†, L CFP NCG† 2 2
2016 Clemson 14–1 7–1 T–1st (Atlantic) W Fiesta†, W CFP NCG† 1 1
2017 Clemson 12–2 7–1 1st (Atlantic) L Sugar† 4 4
2018 Clemson 15–0 8–0 1st (Atlantic) W Cotton†, W CFP NCG† 1 1

we're on track to win it all in 6 years if we can be so patient.

Florida shouldn't take that long to build up. Clemson was no where near the brand UF is prior to Dabo.

Mullen doesn't get 8 years here to put a title worthy team on the field.

it's hard to fire a 10 win consistent coach with no/few titles to show for it. i mean, just look at georgia and richt.

It is. But would you be happy with 10 wins and no titles for 8 years?

I wouldn't be mad if he got to the title game and just barely lost as much. Mullen is good enough to win a title. I believe in the guy. But he has to recruit better. If he doesn't start pushing recruiting more we end up in a very bad position where we are good, but never elite.

Mullen reminds me of Spurrier a lot. Both hate to lose. I think we got us a very good HC. We aren't going to help recruiting by posting negative things about Mullen or his staff. keep that in mind...recruits nowadays are savvy to the world of college football.

2020 is going to be a very good year for us unless we completely flop, but I'm not sure how it will go. We will have a veteran OL with a bit of talent infusion but still: pretty good depth with a lot of experience.

We lose the WRs, RB really doesn't matter because Pierce is doing better right now.

QB will likely be Trask unless he starts to really perform badly -- having played our toughest games already I only expect his numbers to improve.

We will have Toney, Pitts, Copeland and Zipperer to catch for us (among a couple of other guys) so I think we'll be okay on the offensive side of the ball.

Defense...who knows? Maybe having young guys come in might help us a little. Some of our players seem like they've hopped on their own hype bus and you can kind of see it in their effort.

Henderson is a huge example. He has never tackled like he tackles this year, and he obviously is doing so in a manner to try and not get an injury.

Overall, I don't think we'll be in the running to* win a Championship until 2021 -- but I don't mind that we're playing it this close with championship teams who have much better rosters than us even though Mullen has only been here for one full season.

Richt's main problem was that he couldn't beat Florida even when were weren't that good. Mullen losing to top 10 Georgia teams is not a huge deal imo. Georgia has a stacked roster and we can't even fill out the max for team travel without a bunch of walk-ons.

That was also one of Richt's issues.

I’ve heard this defense of a coach somewhere before...
