From Gatorsports

It’s still early, but heading into the summer, Franks appears to be the slight leader for the starting role in the fall.

If it turns out that Franks wins the job, many among the fan base might be disappointed. But it would be viewed completely different by his teammates, who seem to embrace him because of his leadership traits and his athletic ability.

Franks received a piggyback ride off the field from safety Chauncey Gardner-Johnson after his 60-yard TD run Saturday.

“That’s my quarterback,” Gardner-Johnson said. “He came in with me. He came in early. A lot of people are always throwing negative thoughts and shade at him, but I told him, ‘We’ve got to keep playing because the guys in the pros did the same thing. Somebody else is competing for the same job you’re competing for. You’ve just got to go out and do what you’ve got to do.’

“He’s always been a leader. He’s part of the leadership committee, so obviously our guys see something in him that other people don’t. But they’re not putting on a helmet with us. They’re not playing with us.

“That’s my quarterback. I came in early with him, moved into Keyes with him. That’s my boy. Everybody else outside is negative talking about him, but he’s my quarterback.”

Linebacker David Reese said Franks’ 60-yard run Saturday is an indication of the kind of playmaker he can be.

“Feleipe is probably one of the most athletic players on our whole team,” Reese said. “A guy that big, that strong, that fast, and with an arm like that, he can make a lot of plays happen.”

You can have all of the physical traits in the world, but if you cannot process the game, you cannot play QB efficiently. His size, speed, and leadership mean nothing at QB if he cannot get his own team in the right situations to be successful pre and post snap.

I've been trying to tell guys like Reel this for ages. In year 2.5 he looks the exact same, and this is with a much better QB staff in place.

The biggest flaw: He cannot throw over the middle of the field. His eyes immediately track the line and he tries to scramble on instinct alone which makes the line look like shite when he runs into a sack that he himself caused.

His second biggest flaw: He doesn't understand the game. Pre-snap his line has to pretty much adjust the blocking for him which leads to the next point:

The offense is considerably slower with him at Quarterback, which was cool in a McElwain offense who wanted to slow the game down but isn't great in Mullen's offense where the quarterback must be vigilant and cerebral, change the play and adjust to the defense that's being shown.

Franks is a sweetheart, but Trask is in front of him right now and will continue to be ahead of him in Fall if he doesn't fix those two things.

Straw I was the one telling everyone that Franks wasn't ready last fall and everyone said they didn't want Del Rio to start.

What I saw was high school tape of Franks being too emotional & easily excited in the pocket....something not very desirable in major college football.

But I also saw tremendous potential in Franks with his height and arm strength, but it has to be developed where he is poised in the pocket and not always moving his feet because of the fear of pass rushes. I think he has gained some weight and his jersey has filled out better-if it equates to better pocket presence remains to be seen.

You are on the Trask train but be aware that he has never taken a college game snap and we don't know how that might end up. Experience does have a lot of benefits in the huddle when you are the leader. He might be the answer and can lead us to many Ws.....I could care less who starts---as long as we win games.

I do know we have a lot of talent on our team offense and defense. It wont take much more offense and special teams play to turn things around. The teams attitude is better and they know they must play with effort, so I am anxious to see 2018 unfold.

I said I wanted Del Rio to start as well, one of the only people who said it.

And he hasn't changed one bit. He is exactly the same player day 725 as he was day 1. Trask hasn't taken any snaps, sure. Neither had Grier. Neither had Jake Fromm. Neither had Bentley. Neither had Tua.

All QBs have to start somewhere, and to start Franks because hes a nice guy and has experience of eating big plates of shite every game, including the Spring Scrimmages and O&B Debut isn't going to win me over.

Dude's motor for running is slow, his reads are awful, he can't throw over the middle of the field and has no pocket awareness. Doesn't understand pass protection, doesn't understand defenses and his footwork is among the worst I've ever seen.

Trask needs help, but:

He is more comfortable in the pocket, by a mile.
Sees the field so much better.
Has decent footwork, but it's soething we can work with.
Makes infinitely better decisions.

I'm not saying he's the next Heisman, but he deserves more of a shot than a guy who doesn't look like he's taking it seriously. Franks says what you want, but it's just white noise if he continually looks the same game in and game out.

Man........I love having this conversation without TJ saying all our QBs suck or some UG fan saying that their 3rd string QB is better than anyone at UF. Refreshing!!!

Whoever starts week 1 I'm really hoping they put Emory in often. I think if he continues his development he could end up being the starter before the end of the season. Really excited for the future of the position with the Joneses!!

I think it's better this way, and I kind of hope we get more participation from the rest of the Gator fans. This platform for discussion is really nice, and indeed it is good that we're not consistently having the conversation dragged through the muck.

We are not always going to agree and some of us have different levels of optimism about the program and we will express them as a bunch of Gator fans talking about the team we support and not just throwing grenades into the room. It is important to keep the board active that we all participate. go Gators!

If you want to talk shite, do it in tRant, I do

Center T.J. McCoy on Trask: “I think it’s just his will. He’s a fighter and I believe he’s a great leader, too. Every time we’re in the huddle, he’s like, ‘Hey, come on guys, let’s go get it right.’ He’s really encouraging and he’s a competitor. I think he’s really confident in everything he’s doing with calling the plays.”

quote:

Running back Jordan Scarlett on Trask: “I think he did really well. He had a great spring overall. He had some really good scrimmages and great practices. I like his decision-making; he made some great choices and protected the ball. He made sure he had control over it. That’s what I liked about Kyle.”

For Reel: I will take the Center over Gardner-Johnson, Reese and any other defensive player.

And frick man, can we please stop talking about that embarrassing, humiliating and excruciating 60 yard run by Franks where everyone on the field chased him down like he was running in slow motion and they gifted him the run?

Straw, just don't go out a limb over a particular QB right now because you may have to be supporting one that you may not think will win the job when the season comes around............just sayin'

We all know they let Franks score on that long run, in fact they touched him down at around the 10 yard line. It just added some excitement to the game.

I'm just tired of hyping it -- and as for Franks winning the job, he will not. Listen to the podcasts of guys who actually go to the practices. I just posted one the other day.

20 minutes he talks about Franks.

Gators Breakdown says Trask is ahead.

Jordan Sherit saying Trask will probably win (pre-Spring Game) and how Quarterbacks won't be able to bitch about playcalling because Mullen is running the offense.

Franks is not a good quarterback, guys, and he's not going to beat out Trask. He might play if people are injured, but I'll go as far as to say that this is a Jones and Trask race.

I agree with Straw on this one. Franks looks like exactly the same guy to me that he has always been. He has another summer and Fall to figure it out, but my guess is he doesn't. That leaves Trask or Jones.

Jones could easily start, too, just based on his intangibles. He's just so fast, and you can kind of see the defense during the Spring Game when he's doing the read option go "ooookay, hold on here."

Trask and Jones have a fall camp to figure it out, and I'm confident at least one of them if not both will.

I really like your open mindedness Straws

I've been very busy with fishing tournaments and such lately so haven't been too involved. Cant wait for September to come around.

I defended Driskel and Del Rio, I can't defend Franks. It's not about being open-minded, it's about him just not being where he should be and doesn't seem interested in getting better.

He looks the exact same. His HS coach, McElwain and now Mullen are not his problems, he is simply not a good QB and I'm starting to go into the "he will never be a good QB" side. It's not about not liking him as a person, he just literally doesn't do anything you want from a QB.
