Breakdown Of The AU Game

Ok, here is my take after watching three full games of AUs and a partial view of Kent State and Tulane (not a real bad team, but awful QB).
On defense the best players wear # 3 and # 5. Those numbers belong to Marlon Davidson and Derrick Brown...soon to be very wealthy as pros. These two DL are almost unblockable and you cant double team both. Brown for his size is quick as a cat...325 lbs that can run down RBs & QBs. I have watched him quite a bit and he has stamina for such a large dude....wont come out much.
AU lost every starter at LBer from last year. Wooten is probably their best backer. The secondary returns every starter...3 of which are seniors. Dinson is a good S but prone to PI at times.
The defense plays well because of the DL...period. They chew and spit out offenses. Again the quickness of Brown is alarming. Our OL cannot stop Brown with double teams, he will just drag them into the backfield. Forsythe is David up against Godzilla. Hevesy and staff will be up late trying to figure ways to negate him some.
On offense they have Whitlow at RB who isn't a homerun threat unless its clear sailing. At WR the real threat is Seth Williams at WR who is hard to cover and has a tendency to push off DBs with subtle moves to avoid flags. Bo Nix is a true frosh with talent (just wish someone would get him some acne medicine). He can and will run. My guess is that he will run against us at least 15 times or more. He can throw long and is best at the 15 yard range variety. Schwartz is a track star and isn't used as a WR but as a jet sweep runner with after burners.
What we bring to the table is an offense throwing a wide host of receivers that have talent. Kitts is a beast and fights like hell for the ball. I expect AU to really squeeze him at the line of scrimmage to prevent him being open...he will most likely be covered by a LBer who match up size with him. Between Jefferson, Hammond, Grimes and Cleveland we have playmakers. The REAL problem is keeping Trask clean and that's why Pitts is so important. We have to throw quick passes and then use max protect schemes to give Trask time to throw longer.
At RB we have talent and everyone with eyesight can see Pierce is our best option. OL is just not ready for prime time yet. Gouriage btw, played RG and LG yesterday.
But we brought in White and it was a disaster....Towson took his lunch money. So we are stuck with six OL right now and God forbid an injury to our OL and then we are down to five. Gouriage is crucial in that he can play every spot except center. I still think we should use six OL sets and lose 1 WR. First, it helps the run game and secondly it can help keep Trask upright.
Special teams is about even except for punt return yardage.
My opinion is that we have to double team Williams and keep baby nix from running free up the middle and guard against the jet sweep. We are going to double team Brown a lot and lets hope the heat on the east side is cooking to help wear them down some in the 4th qt.
We need to score first and keep the Swamp rocking.

I think we will uses Jones to try and get some rushing yards and let him throw a deep pass to surprise them. Some jet sweeps could help us get some rushing yards too. If we win this game then we become a real contender in the east .

We better not try to run behind the right side of our OL. If we do, I may or may not have a very bad melt.

Color me not a fan of Emory coming in...first, he is not great at even getting snaps in his hands and his scrambling could make us lose 10-12 yds. No thanks.

I’m generally a homer and very optimistic but if our O line doesn't play much better, we don’t have a shot. I am giving D line and D backs a pass based on what I saw Saturday based on injuries.

Our Dline will be fine. Big key is also Trask feeling pressure better and protecting the ball when he feels it. Cant have fumbles.

Lol

We will attack the middle all game. I'd bet if I could Pitts has the most targets this game.

I get that but given out OL, I don’t think Trask will have much time.

Rewatch Miss State last year. That kind of passing game will be what we likely do this year. If they press we put a sixth blocker and look for Jefferson. Kid has such an amazing first move if they get to close he will burn them.

There is nothing that I have seen from Emory Jones that makes me think he is even remotely ready to be QB1 at this moment.
That aside: What we haven't talked about is the speed of the game.
Auburn's hurry up offense may work against them, since our team is built to last -- we are a second half team. If they gas their team out and don't put up a bunch of points, we might just score at will in the 4th quarter, which is what I hope.

Agreed on Jones. Dont see him playing much. I wish we had Toney for the wildcat though. Really needed him during this slate sucks he is out.
Mullen has to be creative to run. I just pray we dont suck into his QB draw on key third downs and shite...cause it doesnt work lol

Straws u are right we have been a second half team the problem is we are not a first half team we start slow and we have been able to be a score or 2 ahead or down a score playing mediocre teams we get down 14 to 17 or more against aubbie going into halftime and we are not coming back.

No matter the HC, what are we doing wrong? It seems our QBs take longer to be ready while other teams throw Frosh QBs out there game one and do well...

If we are down 14-17 at half I agree. It would be very hard to make up that point difference.
If we get the ball to start the second half and score at least a fig then…
Best option if we trail is to get the ball, score, take the lead to start the second half. We play much better defensively I feel after we make adjustments.

I agree Bbobalou we do make adjustments at halftime and do well after that but we can not afford to start as slow as we have all season in the first half we have to come out start fast and put the pressure on them if it is the other way around Auburn comes out and bam bam bam and its 21 - 3 it's not gonna be a good evening

I mean, one thing I’ve noticed is that Trask scores a TD on his first drives. Can we say the for Franks?

I don't necessarily think Mullen did anything wrong, but last year was a transition year so he was just looking for someone other than Matt Corral, who he really never liked at any point. Matt Corral was ready to play the moment he was on campus, but just isn't the type of QB that Mullen likes.
The types of QBs he likes are bigger, stronger and faster. They have mobility and size -- so they probably need a lot more refining.
Similarly, I think a deeper problem is the supporting cast. It's very easy when you're Jake Fromm and you come in behind a 5-star line with two senior 5-star running backs and your entire career is basically throwing to the checkdown and occasionally airing it out.
Same with Lawrence, same with Tua. They have extremely strong running games, whereas ours has been above average at best (before this year) and downright atrocious at worst (this year).
------------------
If we go into half down by two possessions, I actually still like our chances -- as long as Zuniga and Henderson are in the game. We will need them to help get some turnovers.
In the end, we will need to immediately pressure Bo Nix and force him to beat us with his arm -- if he does it, then he does it. Sometimes it happens. But I really like our chances if we're down by 7 - 10 going into half, or up by a score.
Their defense will gas if they don't pace their offense.
