On paper it was a solid hire. I didn’t like it at first but I really want Billy to be the guy. I HATE HC searches every 2-3 yrs.
That said, Billy needs to keep the class together and make some great hires if he hopes to right the ship

He was showing potential as an up-and-coming coach. Definitely had a lot of interest, but from programs like SCar, VT, TCU, Miss State type programs. That is, solid programs but not ones that are aiming to be national title contenders. Auburn was the only really big time program that showed serious interest in him.
Wasn't like Urban or Scott Frost (even though he failed big time) or Dan Lanning now.

True, I suppose any "up-and-comer" type of coach will have doubters.
I do feel the hype around him, Frost, and Lanning now seem to be higher than it was for Napier. Though Napier did have a good amount of hype.

FWIW, Texas insiders aren't totally confident X flips to them.
Apparently they're planning on hiring his HS coach, which is why he's reportedly pushing X to go there.

I sure hope he sticks. If we lose some of these guys that are flirting around we'll drop to what? 15? Not sure how you ever get momentum back after that kind of drop on top of losing key guys in the portal.

It's looking more like the original naysayers might have been right who claimed he was just beating teams with better talent and he had a very basic offensive game plan.

#Florida is getting Penn DL transfer Joey Slackman, one of the best defensive transfers this cycle.
He was the Ivy League defensive player of the year in 2023 w 50 total tackles, 12 TFL and 4 sacks. Immediate help for the #Gators defense
