The difference is, you can see consistently problems with our teams under White since that season. Basketball is obviously different than other sports in judging coaching, yes, but the continued problems have to be fixed at some point too. The offense has been poor for a few years, player development has been sometimes questionable.
He has good qualities of course too. He recruits very well, his defense is usually very good as well and he has an amazing, likeable personality. The issue is, how long do we wait to see the growth in the lacking areas?
While I do agree he should not be fired right now, and I was wrong being so hard on him before. 9 years is way to long for UF. We are considered by most the second best program in the SEC. We have to start being that on the court more consistently. I think that's fair isnt it?

It has taken him some time to build the teams to what he needs. His coaching style is different from others. He finally has the talent (although all very young) and is developing them as the season is going on.
Imagine when this group has a year under their belt, because we likely only lose Blackshear and Scottie Lewis for the next season. The 3 guys we have coming in should compliment every well and we will have another year of experience.
He’s getting his guys in, grabbing even more talent, and then you fire him with this momentum? Just dumb.
That’s why I think 4 more years.

quote:If we continue to make the tournament every season he's not going to get fired, and I've never argued that point.
Billy Donovan had 5 straight years of 1st and 2nd round exits before figuring it out and building the 04s.
We ran with the fact that he made us runner-ups and it paid off.
Mike White made the elite eight in year two after inheriting a shite team from Billy D.
I just think you guys should lower your expectations a tad. It's not championship or bust, but the occasional year of making the elite eight or final four (and at that point, anything can happen).
Get off your high horse and enjoy the season. You guys are some miserable fricks.
The main concern I have with him is that if this class doesn't produce a few NBA players then the last guy drafted from our program will still have been Bradley Beal almost a decade ago and the negative recruiting against White's development will ramp up to levels that will seriously hurt his ability to recruit.
I'm with you that making the tournament every season (one rebuilding year depending on circumstance is fine every once in awhile, like the post 04s team and the team after the 2013-14 30-in-a-row team) is the baseline expectation for our program with the occasional deep run when things come together. But this year was the year things were supposed to come together, so forgive me for having heightened expectations this season. We still could meet them. But I'm not going to lower them because you say I should.
And, again, it doesn't take nine years to evaluate a coach.

We're ranked #39th in the NET and are pegged as a #9 seed currently.
Basketball season is a rollercoaster, sure. But I will ask you this question: if that result holds, will this season have been a success?

Also, the "White needs a different kind of player" line is bullshite. White made the Elite Eight with Donovan's players. Hopefully that wasn't his peak.

You mean the same players that went 16-17 in Billy D's last season and made the NIT the following year?
Mike White did indeed develop those guys, even if Billy D recruited them.
Sit back and enjoy, this is as good as it gets for us as far as coaching quality. Just hope Mike White continues to learn on the job.

Who yelled fire him now after the Auburn win?

That is definitely the hope.

White also inherited a great PG in Chiozza he has not even come close to recruiting that type of PG until he does his teams will unfortunately hang around the 6 to 10 seed in the tournament and will constantly be 1 win and gone hopefully they can find a way to make a run but highly doubt it there is little to no movement on offense everyone just stands around till someone drives to the paint.
But am still holding out hope the rest of the way

I would like for him to get back to the style of play he had at La Tech and the Cheese / Hill years. I do not like the style of play with Nembhard.
Disclaimer: I did not see the Auburn game.

We are so dangerous when we get out on the break, but the way MW has us crash the boards, I understand why our break chances are limited. I just love to open it up and get our guys being aggressive on offense.

Chiozza was so damn good. Wilbekin as well. Either of them running point this team would dominate.
I think we have started to push the ball inside a lot more and that is paying off. We really don't have many pure shooters but have elite athleticism.

We were really fricking spoiled at PG under Donovan. Four-year PG after four-year PG.
The best college basketball teams are getting older, not younger. Hopefully Nembhard and Mann stick around that long but I think both were sold on going to the NBA early.

Yeah. He was so good at recruiting and developing guards. His issue was always developing bigs and getting the most out of them. When he had a strong big we always made deep runs.

Watching the guard play last night was frustrating. Hopefully it will improve soon!

Yeah. I kind of wish Nembhard just attacked. When we were down at the end, he went hard and scored three straight possessions. The kid can score. He needs to be more aggressive like that. You see flashes from these guys, just need it to be more consistent.

Good news is the offense is definitely making strides.
Bad news is the defense is slipping a little, but some of that may have to do with Nembhard and Blackshear getting ill in the last week.
Big time game on Saturday against Baylor. I think they can pull it off.

I am going to give the team a break about last night vs LSU a little bit. Nembhard had the Flu earlier in the week and obviously that will kill your energy. Who knows if anyone else was feeling it, but we were a step slow for most of the game it seemed. LSU out hustled us and got to most of the 50-50 balls and worked us over in the paint, but my hope is we continue to improve and I think we can be the top 10 team we should be very soon.
