Making the Case: Nick Petit-Frere

With National Signing Day right around the corner, several of the nation’s top prospects are nearing final decisions in advance of officially signing their letters-of-intent on Wednesday.

CLASS OF '18 RANKINGS: Rivals250 | Team | State | Position | JUCO

Today, experts from the Rivals.com network examine where five-star Tampa (Fla.) Berkeley Prep offensive tackle will end up playing his college football. The candidates are Florida and Notre Dame.

CLASS OF 2018

UNDECIDED

Petit-Frere’s recruitment has moved along in phases, with several different programs looking like they were in the lead at different junctures. Despite an announcement coming next week, Petit-Frere still has an official visit to Ohio State this weekend. The Buckeyes will join Alabama and Michigan as programs that hosted Petit-Frere and could pull a surprise and land his commitment.

But for today’s exercise we focus on the two programs mentioned most as his future destination: Florida and Notre Dame. Petit-Frere took his official visit to South Bend in the fall and since then the Irish have been major players. Florida remained in the picture despite a coaching change and word is Petit-Frere loved his official visit to Gainesville last weekend. So where will he end up? We asked our team experts to state the case for their respective programs and let National Recruiting Director Mike Farrell issue a verdict.

FLORIDA

“First and foremost, I'm not sure anyone really knows where Petit-Frere will sign at this time, perhaps even Petit-Frere himself. However, I don't believe it is still truly the five-team race that earlier this week Berkley Prep head coach Domminick Ciao made it out to be. He may not come out and say where he stands, but Petit-Frere is too thoughtful of a young man to not have narrowed it down by now after taking all but his final visit this weekend. Because of coaching changes and what he is looking for in terms of academics and athletics, this feels more and more like a two-team race between Florida and Ohio State.” – Mark Wheeler, InsideTheGators.com

NOTRE DAME

“There is really no better match for each other than Notre Dame and Nick Petit-Frere. The five-star OT is serious about academics, and that’s a big reason why the Irish have been a big player for him for a long time. Both Petit-Frere and his mother loved both visits to South Bend, and the Notre Dame coaching staff has made a big impression. Notre Dame has stayed in it, despite the loss of offensive coach Harry Hiestand because offensive coordinator Chip Long and running backs coach/Florida recruiter Autry Denson have put in a ton of effort as well. Notre Dame just sent head coach Brian Kelly, new offensive line coach Jeff Quinn, Long and Denson to Florida for an in-home visit, and feedback from that trip has been positive. With the lack of information out there, there’s no reason to believe Notre Dame can’t pull this one off.” – David McKinney, BlueandGold.com

THE VERDICT

“No one seems to know on this one, so I’ll go with Florida since they are local and have been linked to Petit-Frere the longest. It could be any of his finalists, as he’s not going to make a decision based solely on location. But he has the best connection and comfort level with the Gators.” – Mike Farrell

Emory Jones, Florida

247Sports Composite rank: No. 85 overall, No. 5 dual-threat QB
Height/weight: 6'2.5"/195 pounds
High School: Heard County (Franklin, Ga.)

Had Dan Mullen failed to bring in Jones last month after settling into his new job as Florida’s head coach, he would have been staring down the prospect of entering his inaugural season in Gainesville with an unremarkable crop of players at a position that has produced far more headaches than highlights for the Gators since Tim Tebow left campus. Jones had been committed to Ohio State since July 2016, but he ultimately decided to rescind that pledge in favor of signing with Florida in December. The cupboard isn’t totally bare here: Mullen inherited multiple other quarterbacks from the previous regime, but Jones is the QB he hand-picked to run his system after previously offering Jones his first scholarship back when Mullen was at Mississippi State.

Although there are three other Peach State-based passers in the class of 2018 who are ranked higher than Jones (Lawrence, Fields and Williams), he may have a better shot at instant playing time than all of them. Feleipe Franks is the only signal caller who attempted a pass for Florida last season that will be back in 2018, and his performance over 11 games as a redshirt freshman (1,438 yards with a 54.6% completion rate, nine touchdowns, eight interceptions) didn’t do much to assuage skepticism about the Gators’ quarterback situation at the outset of the Mullen era. Mullen’s history as a quarterback developer should inspire optimism about Jones’s capacity to bloom into a capable starter.

Are some of you all really arguing with State fans on the recruiting board? They have never won anything of significance and have been extremely jilted over the loss of Mullen, but I would even argue they are more upset with Stricklin. It’s not doing any good to entertain the arguments or trolls. Just let them say their pieces, Mullen has proven to be a better recruiter than we all thought, given the last few months. Florida should close with one of the better finishes in the country.

DL Malcolm Lamar is unofficially visiting FSU this weekend. McElwain really fricked Florida on this deal. Borderline miracle the current staff even has Florida in the picture. Taggart did lie to the kid though, so maybe there’s a chance.

Agreed, after hearing so many stories about him being a lazy and/or poor recruiter, it is hard to believe they are talking about the same guy. Mullen has been as active on the trail as I can remember any other coach. Going to pay dividends in 2019 and beyond.

He's been the most active. I think it's kind of when you're on set of an indy film without the money to really run the production of the flick -- then you get actual funders for your next film and it's suddenly much easier and they never tell you ''no'' on one of your side projects; whether it be something like flying cross country to see a particular area of the world for inspiration or even just having extra money for your staff.

Mullen upgraded on the recruiting front (one could say everything from academics all the way through every category) and it's showing by how active and relentless he's been these last few months with Social Media and movement.

He’s probably referring to the fact that Taggart said he was staying at Oregon and obviously did not

Is it a numbers crunch at Auburn? That’s a little surprising but he would make a nasty pass rusher in the 3-4.

They have 3 linebacker commits, 23 total commits.

It’s odd.

Have you heard anything on NPF? Seems to have gone silent since his visit.

This has been the craziest, busiest start to a year in my life and I’m just now getting a chance to really catch up on Florida football stuff. Hopefully I can have the next couple days to peak at recruiting for a little while

No one knows anything about NPF and I think he did that deliberately. As for recruiting, we have like 5 more days until NSD and hopefully Copeland's visit wasn't soured by this basketball showing.

Final stretch, and right now we've done pretty well to fill our positions of need.

There’s nothing good out there within NPF.

I think the general consensus is ''He's going to ND until he's not''. However, we are leading in crystal balls at 64% with everyone else clocking in at 14 and has been rising since January 3rd.

I think people are assuming that location is a bigger factor than he's leading on.

Top Pickers for Alabama: 4 out of 5 to Florida.

Top for Florida: 4 out of 5 to Florida

Top for ND: 2 for Florida, 2 for Alabama.

I like our chances right now.

Nothing good as in nothing reliable or nothing good as in bad news?

I’ve been able to follow along the gist of most of it but I’m just getting back into it.

Looks like we’re looking really good for commits Gouraige, Watkins, McDowell, and targets Copeland, Boykin, Chatfield, and Dorian Gerald

True battles for NPF, Caleb Tannor, Malcolm Lamar (unlikely), Caleb Johnson

And unlikely on Nesta Silvera.

That about right? Anybody else to keep an eye on?

Nothing reliable. He’s played it perfectly, close to the vest.
