Florida recruiting: News & notes from Day 1 of Under Armour All-America week

By Zach Abolverdi SEC Country Staff
December 30, 2017
ORLANDO — Saturday was media day for the 2018 Under Armour All-America Game.

Florida has five commits and several targets competing in Orlando this week. Here are the news and notes from Day 1:

Florida quarterback signee Emory Jones is ready to recruit for the Gators this week. “I take a lot of ownership in that,” he said. “I have to lead the class and bring a lot of guys in that can change the program. I feel like this class will be the class to actually do it.” Jones said his top targets are wide receivers Jacob Copeland, Tommy Bush and Justyn Ross and offensive tackles Nicholas Petit-Frere and Richard Gouraige, a Florida commit. Jones on the receivers: “I know all of them except Tommy. I’ve talked to him over the phone, but I’ve never met him in person. Justyn Ross, I think I have a little time to get with him. I know he’s still with Alabama and Auburn, but I feel like I can talk my talk and get him to Gainesville. Jacob, I was at Alabama with him and a couple camps. I feel very confident in him. I’ve thrown with him and Justyn a couple times.”
Copeland said his final three visits will be to Texas A&M (Jan. 19), Alabama (Jan. 26) and Florida (Feb. 2). He plans to make his decision on National Signing Day and said it’s basically a three-team race at this time. “I know Florida, ‘Bama, Tennessee … it’s really going to come down to those three. I’m going to take a visit to Texas A&M to see things with Jimbo [Fisher] and the new staff.”
Ross said the signing of Jones will help Florida’s chances with him. He’s giving some late consideration to UF and has spoken with coach Dan Mullen and wide receivers coach Billy Gonzales. “I may set up a visit in January with the Gators, but I don’t know for sure yet,” Ross said. His top schools are Alabama, Auburn and Clemson.
Auburn, Florida and Georgia are the finalists for 4-star receiver Anthony Schwartz, who also announces Thursday. Schwartz said he’s already informed the winning school. Florida had been the favorite for the nation’s fastest recruit, but the Tigers became his top team in November and they’re the favorite to land him next week. Despite his upcoming decision, Schwartz said he may visit Florida in January to get a better feel for the new coaches. “It’s just about having a good relationship,” he said when asked what it will take for the Gators to regain their lead. “That’s what I had with the old coaching staff. I knew everyone on staff. When they all got replaced, it just kind of hurts my relationship with Florida and that brings me closer to another school.”
Former Gators wide receiver commit Ja’Marr Chase said he will consider visiting UF next month. However, he doesn’t have a relationship with the staff and admits that Florida isn’t really a factor right now. “On Jan. 26, I’m going to probably [visit] Florida. I want to go up there. I like going up to Florida. It’s a great place to be. I fell in love with it when I committed there. … It’s just about me getting to know the coaches. I’ve got to get comfortable with Coach Mullen.” Chase has trips scheduled to LSU (Jan. 12) and Auburn (Jan. 19). He won’t visit any schools for the final weekend and plans to make his decision on signing day.
Florida tried to land a visit from 4-star receiver Justin Watkins, but he’s content with his final schools. Watkins will decide on Thursday between Alabama and LSU. “Coach Mullen told me he wanted me to stay home. They wanted me to visit, but I’m not. I grew up 20 minutes away. I want to go see something different. I don’t want to be in the same environment. All my family is right there and I don’t want to be distracted by a lot of people.”
Petit-Frere didn’t offer much insight into his recruitment Saturday, but the 5-star offensive tackle hasn’t lost interest in the Gators despite the coaching changes. “It’s still Florida. It’s still a great football program. I’m just researching the new coaches and what’s going on there, what’s changing and what’s the same.” Petit-Frere has three official visits remaining, but doesn’t know where he will go yet. Florida is being considered for one of those trips along with Alabama, Auburn, Florida State, Miami, Ohio State and others. Petit-Frere likely will decide on signing day and already has visited Michigan and Notre Dame.
Florida State offensive tackle commit Christian Meadows took a surprise trip to Florida earlier this month. He was scheduled to return for an official visit on Jan. 20, but will visit UCF instead. Meadows said the Gators are still in it despite the change in his visit plans, but they appear to be on the outside looking in. Meadows will visit Auburn or Louisville on Jan. 13, Miami on Jan. 27 and FSU on Feb. 2.
Florida defensive back signee Trey Dean thinks the Gators have a chance to flip Alabama linebacker commit Quay Walker. They’ve been friends since 10th grade and Dean revealed that Walker will visit UF next month. “Keep this on the low, but we’re going to get Quay Walker. Quay was going to Alabama because I was going to Alabama. Now I’m not going to Alabama, so he’s [iffy]. I’m an early enrollee, so he’s going to visit on [Jan. 12] and I’ll be there to show him around.”
Florida tight end signee Kyle Pitts on Jones: “I like him a lot. He’s a mobile quarterback and can throw the ball. He fits Coach Mullen’s offense and he’s going to help recruiting. The past few years people have been saying that Florida doesn’t have a quarterback, but Coach Mullen came in and got a good one.”

ORLANDO — Sunday was the first practice for the 2018 Under Armour All-America Game.

Florida has five commits and several targets competing in Orlando this week. Here are the news and notes from Day 2:

Gators quarterback signee Emory Jones is on the same team (Highlight) as Florida WR targets Jacob Copeland and Tommy Bush. He connected with both of them in the passing game and threw a pair of touchdowns in the red zone on Sunday. “I didn’t have any jitters,” Jones said. “I came out here to have fun and that’s what I tried to do. I got a feel for some of the guys I’m going to be playing with this week and hopefully at Florida, too.”

Copeland was one of the top performers at his position. He has recovered from his ankle injury last month and had no trouble getting open against an All-American secondary. “It felt good to be back,” he said. “I was out there bouncing around and running well. Whoever wants it, line it up.” Copeland caught passes from Jones at the Future 50 camp last year and enjoying playing with him Sunday. “It was a good experience once again. He throw a couple good passes that I caught. He’s a great quarterback and I know he wants me to be one of his go-to guys at Florida.”

Bush had one of the best catches of the day and it’s clear why he’s a priority for the UF new staff. The top-200 overall receiver towers over defensive backs and has surprising speed for his size. He runs a sub-4.5 40-yard dash at 6-foot-5, 191 pounds. Bush has two official visits remaining after taking trips to Georgia, Michigan State and Nebraska this fall. Florida is in the running for one of his final visits along with Baylor, Notre Dame and Ole Miss. Bush is considering the Gators because of his relatiosnhip with head coach Dan Mullen, wide receivers coach Billy Gonzales and quarterbacks coach Brian Johnson. “We had been talking to Mississippi State a lot and when they moved to Florida they contacted us immediately. … For that, we had to consider them.”

Gators commit Richard Gouraige and 5-star recruit Nicholas Petit-Frere split reps at left tackle and looked like future SEC starters. They won the majority of their reps and both linemen rebounded after getting beat. The Tampa, Fla., products are priority recruits for Mullen and offensive line coach John Hevesy. Gouraige plans to official visit Auburn and Clemson in January before making a final decision on his recruitment. Florida is one of several schools trying to secure an official vist from Petit-Frere, who will likely commit on National Signing Day.

The Under Armour All-America Game roster features a pair of Gators linebacker targets in Alabama commit Quay Walker and Kentucky commit Xavier Peters. Walker is not doing interviews at this time, but plans to official visit Florida on Jan. 12. Peters plans to visit the following weekend. Walker is Florida’s top target at the position and played well in the opening practice, showing he has the versatility to line up at multiple LB spots.
Florida signee Trey Dean is listed as a safety by every recruiting service. However, the 4-star DB is playing cornerback for Team Highlight and looked impressive on Sunday. Dean had multiple pass breakups and showed that he can guard the likes of Copeland and Bush. At 6-foot-2 and 180 pounds, Dean is a tall corner with great athleticism and ball skills. The early enrollee has the ability to help the Gators with their needs at the position.

A new cornerback target for Florida is top-50 overall prospect Olaijah Griffin, who is the son of rap artist Warren G. He recieved an offer from UF on Sunday and has scheduled an official visit for Feb. 2. “I’m interested in Florida,” he said. “I know it’s D.B.U., but I want to go check out the school and see if I like it. I’ve never been there before, so I’m looking forward to visiting.” The former UCLA commit said he will also take trips to Auburn, Michigan and Southern Cal in January.

Jacob Copeland’s bond with Florida QB Emory Jones goes beyond football

January 1, 2018

Join us here on SEC Country for a daily recap of the latest Florida recruiting news, tales from the trail and perspective on what it all means for the Gators.

ORLANDO — Florida quarterback signee Emory Jones decided on the Gators the night before the early signing period.

The first recruit he told?

Top-100 wide receiver Jacob Copeland.

After mulling over his options for two days, Jones said he choose the Gators over Alabama, Florida State and Ohio State around 11 p.m. on Dec. 19. His recruiting efforts began right away.

“The night before signing day, he hit me up and let me know that he was locked into Florida,” Copeland said.

The message from Jones wasn’t his first time communicating with Copeland. They’ve been friends for two years and got to know each other through recruiting.

“He’s a funny dude and cool to be around,” Jones said of Copeland. “We talk about a lot of things off the field that aren’t about football. We’re just friends all together. That translates to the field and that’s a great thing to have between a quarterback and receiver.”

Copeland and Jones visited Alabama together during the process and attended a couple of the same camps, including the Future 50 underclassmen combine on Dec. 31, 2016.

Exactly one year later, Copeland and Jones returned to those same fields at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex as Under Armour All-Americans.

“It was a good experience once again,” Copeland said. “He throw a couple good passes that I caught. He’s a great quarterback and I know he wants me to be one of his go-to guys at Florida.”

Jones threw three touchdown passes to Copeland on Sunday and the top-100 overall recruits hung out all weekend. Their chemistry is evident in the passing game.

“It was a natural connection,” Jones said. “I felt it and hopefully we can keep it going on the next level. Every time I threw the ball to him, he would come back to the huddle and we could dap each other up.”

Jones is the No. 4 dual-threat quarterback and No. 41 overall prospect in the country, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings. Copeland is excited about the possibility of playing with Jones in college, but not because he’s a big-name QB.

“I like Emory just because of who he is,” Copeland said. “I’ve known him for two years now. He’s a great quarterback, but his personality stands out about him. I can relate to him. We’ve both been on the same grind and now we’re UA All-Americans.”

The question now is will they be Florida Gators. Jones is officially part of the program and will enroll early next month. His top target is Copeland, who de-committed from UF on Nov. 25 after the coaching changes.

The Gators are still one of his finalists along with Alabama and Tennessee. Copeland will officially visit Florida on Feb. 2 before making his signing day decision.

“Adding Emory was a good pickup for them,” Copeland said. “I’m going to chat it up with him, see how everything goes and see how the [Florida] coaches are talking. Just because he committed, that doesn’t mean I’ll end up going there.”

It will certainly help Florida’s chances, though. Jones said he’s “very confident” with Copeland and doesn’t have to force the issue with him.

“I don’t bug him about it. We just have regular conversations,” Jones said. “I know he has to make the best decision for him, his family and his future. But I tell him he needs to bring his talent to Gainesville so we can do it big together.”

Mullen has a high success rate of winning guys over once they're on campus.

Copeland's pretty much a done deal, man. Hanging out with Jones and the two of them are killin' it together.

ORLANDO — Quay Walker broke his silence Monday.

The 4-star linebacker from Crisp County High School (Cordele, Ga.) is currently committed to Alabama, but that pledge has been shaky for several months. Walker declined interview requests during his first two days in Orlando for the 2018 Under Armour All-America Game.

But after Monday’s practice, Walker decided to speak with SEC Country about his recruitment and where things stand.

“I’m still a commit … but right now I’m unsure,” Walker said. “I was looking forward to being coached by Coach [Jeremy] Pruitt. That plays a big role in it. And then sometimes I hear rumors about Coach Derrick Ansley leaving. That’s my main recruiter, so it’s all about coaches that I can trust.”

Walker came close to flipping to Georgia in December and signing early, but couldn’t get his paperwork ready in time. Tennessee is now in the mix with Pruitt becoming the Vols head coach and Auburn also has a shot.

Then there’s Florida.

Walker has always been high on the Gators, but lost some interest in the program after former defensive coordinator Geoff Collins took the Temple job.

“Florida is a school that I’ve been liking,” Walker said. “They offered me back when Coach Collins was there. Florida is my dream school. No one knows that.”

Walker has decided to reconsider the Gators because of the staff changes. New UF coach Dan Mullen and defensive coordinator Todd Grantham have made him a priority and he will officially visit on Jan. 12.

“As soon as Coach Mullen got the job, he hit me up,” Walker said. “That’s going to play a big role in it. I pretty much didn’t like the defense Florida was in before the 3-4. So that’s why I wasn’t considering Florida.”

Mullen and Grantham have some help in their pursuit Walker. He’s close friends with Gators DB signee Trey Dean, who told reporters Saturday that he thinks Florida will flip Walker.

“I don’t know why he’s so confident. I don’t know where I’m going yet,” Walker said. “That’s my brother. I love Trey. That might play a big role in it, too. But at the same time, I gotta do what’s best for me.

“I first met Trey when I went to the Rising Seniors game in Georgia. Me and him just built [a relationship] ever since then. I got his number. We hit each other up and talk on the phone every now and then.”

In addition to Florida, Walker will officially visit UGA on Jan. 19, Auburn on Jan. 26 and either Alabama or Tennessee on Feb. 2. He plans to announce his final decision on National Signing Day.

ORLANDO — Recruits had to brave the elements Monday during the second practice for the 2018 Under Armour All-America Game.

It was a cold, rainy day at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex and the weather worsened over the course of practice.

Florida has five commits and several targets competing in Orlando this week. Here are the news and notes from Day 3:

Florida DB signee Trey Dean was the top performer Monday among the future Gators. He has been the most physical cornerback in Orlando this week and his cover skills are elite. Dean had an interception and was aggressive in the secondary all day. He drove 5-star wide receiver Devon Williams out of bounds on one play and also got into a scuffle with top-100 WR Jalen Preston (see below). “They told me he was too big and strong, so I had to find out,” Dean said of the fight. “It’s a dog-eat-dog mentality and the bigger dog is going to win. That’s what I came here for.”

The weather created issues Monday for most of the quarterbacks, including Gators signee Emory Jones. He and others made some erratic throws and sailed a few balls as the rain and wind picked up in the afternoon. Jones did connect with Florida WR target Jacob Copeland for a 40-yard touchdown and had another potential TD-pass dropped by 4-star tight end Malcolm Epps.
Nicholas Petit-Frere showed why 247Sports has him ranked as the nation’s No. 1 offensive tackle and No. 5 overall recruit. After showing flashes of his mean streak in the opening practice, Petit-Frere took his game to another level Monday and was dominant in drills. He won back-to-back reps against top-100 defensive end Jordan Davis and tossed the Alabama signee to the ground.
Alabama commit Quay Walker had another solid day at linebacker and made a nice stop on a screen play. After practice, Walker discussed his recruitment with SEC Country and revealed his official visit plans. The Gators will host Walker on Jan. 12 and they have a strong shot at flipping him. He is “unsure” about his pledge to the Crimson Tide and called Florida his dream school on Monday. Walker didn’t like Florida’s defense under former coordinator Randy Shannon, but said he’s a fan of Todd Grantham’s 3-4 scheme. “That’s my style of play,” he said. “I run it in high school, so it will be easy to pick up on.” Walker said the determining factor in his recruitment is finding a coach he can trust and talk to about anything, so he wants to spend time with Florida’s new defensive coordinator on his visit. “I text him and he seems pretty cool,” Walker said of Grantham. “I think I’ll understand him better when I get up there and talk to him more. That’s going to play a big role in it.”
Dean wasn’t the only cornerback who impressed Monday. Top-50 overall recruit Olaijah Griffin also had a stellar performance, finishing with an interception and a few pass breakups. He received an offer from the Gators on Sunday night and said he will officially visit Florida on Feb. 2. Griffin spoke with new UF defensive backs coach Charlton Warren and said he was “shocked” by the offer. The former UCLA commit is from Mission Viejo, Calif., and has Southern Cal in his top 5. However, Griffin said proximity to home doesn’t matter to him and he’s willing to leave the West Coast for an SEC school. Tennessee currently leads for him and Auburn is also one of his finalists. “After going to Tennessee and seeing what it’s like out there, I was like, ‘Man, SEC is way different than California.’ I was feeling it.”

Florida recruiting: January to-do list for Gators’ 2018 class

January 2, 2018

Every month, SEC Country will outline three items the Florida coaches need to accomplish on the recruiting trail. At the end of the month, we revisit the list to see if the Gators checked off any boxes.

Here is Florida’s recruiting to-do list for January:

1. Secure more official visitors

Five weeks remain in the 2018 recruiting cycle and the Gators have official visits scheduled for multiple top targets, including wide receiver Jacob Copeland, linebacker Quay Walker (Alabama commit) and junior college defensive linemen Dorian Gerald and Noah Jefferson.

However, several recruits are still on the fence about visiting Florida this month or that first weekend in February. When Gators coach Dan Mullen and his staff return to the recruiting trail, the top priority will be securing trips from their remaining targets.

The players considering an official visit to Florida are cornerback Patrick Surtain Jr., wide receivers Tommy Bush and Justyn Ross and offensive linemen William Barnes, Richard Gouraige (UF commit) and Nicholas Petit-Frere, among others.

A trip by Surtain seems unlikely, but the Gators will get the last official visit from cornerback Olaijah Griffin. Florida is expected to host uncommitted defensive ends Andrew Chatfield and Malcolm Lamar, but their visit plans are unknown at this time.

Defensive tackles Coynis Miller (Auburn commit) and Nesta Silvera (Miami commit) intend to officially visit Florida, but both appear to be firm with their current commitments. Defensive end Malik Langham will take a trip to UF on Jan. 26.

2. Get traction with new targets

Getting recruits on campus is the first step. Then the trip needs to yield results.

Bush, Griffin, Langham and Walker are new targets who weren’t being pursued by the preview staff. All have expressed interest with the new coaches in place, but the Gators still have ground to make up for each prospect.

When they make their way to Gainesville this month, Florida must capitalize on those trips and improve its standing. Mullen and his staff have already shown the ability to get traction with official visitors.

The Gators landed commitments from six of the seven targets who visited UF in December.

3. Set up for a strong finish

The remaining needs for UF are wide receiver, offensive line, defenisve line, linebacker and cornerback.

The majority of Florida’s targets plan to decide on National Signing Day, so the Gators may land only a couple commitments in January.

However, this month will determine how strong Florida finishes. Once the dead period ends on Jan. 12, Mullen and his staff have four weeks to host official visitors and hit the road for in-home visits.

There’s still a few holes in Florida’s 2018 recruiting class, which was once ranked in the top 10. The Gators have a chance to regain that spot, but the coaches must make the most of the contact period.

Florida recruiting: News & notes from Day 4 of Under Armour All-America week

January 2, 2018

ORLANDO — A few future Gators stood out Tuesday during the third practice for the 2018 Under Armour All-America Game.

Florida has five commits and several targets competing in Orlando this week. Here are the news and notes from Day 4:

For the second consecutive day, a Florida commit was involved in a fight after winning a 1-on-1 battle. Top-100 offensive tackle Richard Gouraige went up against 4-star defensive end Devin O’Rourke on Tuesday and easily won his rep against the Northwestern signee. They continued to shove each other after the whistle as linemen from both sides of the ball surrounded them near the sideline. Multiple players fell on top of Gouraige and banged up his shoulder, but he was able to return to practice. However, the coaches ended the 1-on-1 drills after the scuffle. Gators defensive back signee Trey Dean took down top-100 wide receiver Jalen Preston on Monday (watch).
Nicholas Petit-Frere had another stellar showing on Tuesday and won the strength competition. The 5-star tackle has been the top offensive linemen in practice this week. “Competing at this level with some of the best talent in the country is an amazing experience,” he said. “The coaches are telling me I’m working good, but I’m trying to get better each day with my technique and hand placement.” Florida is considered a top school for Petit-Frere and he has spoken with Gators quarterback signee Emory Jones in Orlando. “I think he’s a great quarterback. He’s doing really well and having an amazing week. We’ve had a chance to talk briefly and I’m going to look into him a little bit. I don’t try to base my decision on [other players], but it is cool to know guys who are going to certain schools and getting a chance to talk to them.”

Jones is also recruiting 4-star wide receiver Tommy Bush to join him at Florida. The top-200 overall prospect received an offer from the Gators last month. Bush and Jones are on the same team (Hightlight) this week. “I’ve been throwing to him a lot. He’s pretty good,” Jones said of Bush. “He’s a long, tall, fast receiver. I can throw it to him and he’ll go get it at any time.” Bush has already visited Georgia, Nebraska and Michigan State. Florida is trying to land one of his final trips along with Baylor, Notre Dame and Ole Miss. Jones believes the in-state Bears are the team to beat for Bush. “I think it’s going to be hard to get him out of Texas, but I’m working on it,” Jones said. “I’ve been talking to him and he said he would love to play with me. He feels like I’m a great quarterback.”
Auburn defensive tackle commit Coynis Miller is scheduled to officially visit Florida on Feb. 2. He recently set up the trip with new Gators coach Dan Mullen and assistant Ja’Juan Seider. “My interest in Florida is high,” Miller said. “They were one of my top schools previously. Coach Mullen and Coach Seider hit me up and just asked me to come down for a visit. I’m still committed to Auburn, but I’m just giving other schools a shot.” The nation’s No. 13-ranked DT will also visit Auburn (Jan. 12), Oregon (Jan. 19) and Tennessee (Jan. 26) this month. Miller said he speaks with Mullen on a regular basis. “We talk a lot. He’s just a great head coach,” Miller said of Mullen. “He treats his players like they’re his sons. I’m looking forward to my visit. I’ve been when Coach [Jim] McElwain was there and I want see how things have changed with Coach Mullen.”
Gators tight end signee Kyle Pitts caught a touchdown pass during red-zone work on Tuesday and has performed well throughout the week. “It’s just a blessing. I’m getting to show my talent around these top athletes. Not many players get this opportunity,” Pitts said. Florida has a handful of commits in Orlando and Pitts is enjoying the time with his future teammates. “It’s a good time. We’re having fun out here together,” Pitts said. “I’ve been getting close to those guys and we’re trying to recruit some others to join the class.”
UF signee Evan McPherson tied for first place in the kicking competition Tuesday, making all seven field-goal attempts and connecting on a 55-yarder (see below). “I just wanted to compete and show everybody what I can do. I feel like I did that,” McPherson said. “All the players got real pumped when I hit the long field goal, so that was pretty cool.”

McPherson looked good. He hooked a few kicks (they still went through) but he is solid from 50 easy. He's exactly what we need after Eddie.

I didn't get to see anything other than that, watching all the highlights right now, and it's a blast. Anyone else going to watch on Thursday?

And I ain't happy with Copeland talkin' shite about Florida on his Twitter.

It's probably Alabama, but I'd wager a lot that it'd never be Tennessee (although they feel strongly they'll land him).
