4-star offensive tackle Kai-Leon Herbert.
A gesture by Gators has them in position to flip Michigan OL commit Kai-Leon Herbert

Zach Abolverdi ZACH ABOLVERDI
SEC Country Staff

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Kai-Leon Herbert is an Under Armour All-American, but he wasn’t able to play in this year’s game.

The 4-star offensive tackle from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., was sidelined because of an injury. His recovery process is being aided by Florida, and that gesture has helped put the Gators in position to flip the Michigan commit.

“A lot of people don’t know this,” Herbert said, “but I chipped a piece of bone in my shoulder. The University of Florida has been gracious enough to refer me to doctors. They’re telling me this doesn’t scare them off one bit. They still want me to be part of the family and I can come compete for a starting job.”

Florida was the leader for Herbert early in his recruiting process, but he committed to Michigan on July 6. Despite that decision, Herbert is still high on the Gators and communicates with offensive line coach Mike Summers.

“There wasn’t anything wrong with Florida in the first place,” he said. “The coaching staff, the environment, the campus lifestyle, the students. Everything over there is top notch.

“Coach Summers, he feels the relationship that me and him have built over the past year is really great. He sees me in orange and blue. I can come in and make difference there, I just have to work for what I want.”

Herbert has been solid with the Wolverines and officially visited Ann Arbor in Oct. 22. However, he hasn’t shut down his recruitment just yet.

“Everything about Michigan is just a ‘wow’ factor,” Herbert said. “It really blows you away. I haven’t seen anything like that school. As of right now I’m going to Michigan, but that can change. I am still looking at other schools to see how it’s going to benefit me and my family in the long run.”

Herbert will officially visit Auburn (Jan. 13), Miami (Jan. 20) and Florida (Jan. 27) before making a final decision. Having been to UF several times, this upcoming trip isn’t for him.

“It’s basically for my parents so they can get the feel of what I feel. That’s really important,” Herber said. “This isn’t only my decision, this is a family decision. It basically comes down to if I want my family to see me play or if I’d just rather have them watch me on TV.

“My mom doesn’t want me to go so far away, but my dad wants me to try and get as far away as I can. They see Michigan as a great opportunity for me, but they also haven’t seen any other schools.”

Herbert attends American Heritage High School with UF commits James Houston and Marco Wilson. Another one of his teammates, U.S. Army All-American Tedarrell Slaton, lists the Gators as his leader. Several members of Florida’s class began openly recruiting Herbert on social media last weekend.

Herbert is bracing himself for a hectic month of recruiting, but he’s not stressed about the process. The 6-foot-5, 284-pound lineman knows exactly what he’s looking for in a school.

“You just have to follow where your heart goes and make the best decision for yourself,” Herbert said. “It’s about who’s going to take care of me not only as an athlete and a student, but as a human being.

“All these coaches are really great to me, but I know that when I get to college the switch is going to flip and I’m going to get snapped on. I want a coach who’s going to yell at me, but also a coach who’s going to lift me up.”

He's only arguing because he isn't a Gator fan. He gets really sensitive when you call him out for not being a Gator fan

From 247:

Jan. 13-15: Florida is opening the official visit weekends by hosting a key group of targets. Four uncommitted Top247 prospects highlight the weekend with safety Devon Hunter, defensive end Jarez Parks, wide receiver James Robinson and linebacker Levi Jones. Two new names on the board expected to visit include Maryland defensive tackle commit Cam Spence and three-star cornerback Eric Stokes.

Jan. 20-22: The second official visit weekend will feature many of Florida’s current commits who appear to be locked in on their choice including defensive end Zachary Carter, wide receiver Daquon Green, running back Malik Davis, cornerback Marco Wilson, and offensive tackle T.J. Moore. However, key uncommitted official visitors include a pair of Top247 prospects — cornerback Christopher Henderson and offensive guard/defensive tackle Tedarrell Slaton.

Jan. 27-29: The final visit weekend before National Signing Day is shaping up to be a monster for the Gators. Top defensive line target LaBryan Ray, as well as top safety target Brad Stewart are scheduled to be in town. The Gators will go for late flips that weekend as well with Michigan offensive tackle commit Kai-Leon Herbert, Georgia defensive tackle commit Devonte Wyatt, and Maryland defensive tackle commits Brandon Gaddy and Breyon Gaddy all expected on campus.

EARLY NOTES ON COACHES HITTING THE ROAD

— Florida wide receivers coach Kerry Dixon will visit four-star wide receiver James Robinson on Thursday, a day before he arrives for his official visit.

— Top-50 defensive lineman LaBryan Ray also expects to get a visit from a Florida assistant on Thursday.

— Michigan offensive tackle commit Kai-Leon Herbert expects visits from a Florida assistant on both Thursday as well as next Monday.

— Look for Florida to go visit four-star safety Devon Hunter on Thursday as well.

NSD ’17 ON THE HORIZON

Scheduled Announcements

January 20: S Devon Hunter

January 30: OL Caleb Chandler

January 31: DT Elijah Conliffe

Currently trending

Florida continues to be in good shape to land four-star cornerback Christopher Henderson, four-star safety Brad Stewart, and four-star offensive guard/defensive tackle Tedarrell Slaton. The 247Sports Crystal Ball continues to favor the Gators for each.

Flip watch

Michigan offensive tackle commit Kai-Leon Herbert continues to be a prospect many feel the Gators will flip in the end. Many feel that if Florida gives the green light to Maryland commits Brandon Gaddy and Breyon Gaddy, the brothers would flip their pledge to the Gators immediately.

Conversely, Florida is trying to fend off Southern California and Nebraska from flipping cornerback commit Elijah Blades. The Gators will host Blades on an official visit this coming weekend with the hopes of shutting down his recruitment.

I'm almost positive that I heard during Auburn's bowl game they said that he has already enrolled, and he was also already practicing with the team for the bowl game.

Who was he supposed to recruit? He brought in two other freshmen who, you and everyone else, said were works in progress?

You're so fricking salty he destroyed Iowa in the bowl game.

UF won 7 games in WM last year. I expect an offensive HC not finish behind the guy that just got fired who had less talent.

You also said that other teams had bad Offensive Lines: That's cool, but what you don't realize is that the entire offense was bad.

The entire offense was neglected. Maybe one good player on the entire offensive roster? Grier? Outside of that, our best players have been freshmen and sophomores.

You guys need to come back to Earth and temper your expectations because you're delusional if you think McElwain is going to come in -- take an offense with no line, no QB, middle-rung halfbacks, one tight-end worth anything and one receiver worth anything and then even be competitive against teams that have had head coaches for five or six years chalk-full of talent and cohesion.

Seriously, you guys are the angriest bunch I've ever seen after a dominating bowl performance. ''Mac hasn't beaten anyone worth any salt'', like LSU? Like Iowa?

Wish Michigan and Honey Harbaugh could say the same.

BTW there is a possibility that Clemson OL Fruhmorgan will transfer to UF...has to sit out a year but will still have two or years left to play. He is from Tampa Plant HS.

Things are going to be better soon all across the board and the negative nellies will be like crickets.

I'm not sure if this belongs in this thread or the hijacked assistant coach rumors thread, but here's something interesting:

Look at the recruits that Greg Nord is visiting.

Cory Durden
Tamorrian Terry
Alex Jackson
Zech Byrd

Byrd is a solid commit and isn't going anywhere. All the others we are either not after hard or have no offer from us.

I'm of the opinion that this is a clear sign that once Nord's contract is up next month, it will not be re-upped. For those of you complaining about why Mac hasn't made staff moves, do you realize that contracts are a real thing? And you can't hire guys to positions that are filled by a coach that's under contract already? Nord and Summers contracts both expire next month. Those guys will be replaced then. But for now, we're waiting on Locksley, who should be made official one way or another in the next 48 hours or so.

Didn't McElwain get boatraced by Harbaugh in their 1st game against each other 41-7?
Harbaugh got smoked his 1st year but gave OSU all they could handle in year 2. Mac 0 offensive TDs vs FSU 2 years in a row. Outscored 58-15.
Harbaugh: 1 SB appearance, 2 orange bowl appearances 1-1, Killed B10 champ PSU 49-10, Top notch recruiter, destroyed McElwain H2H 41-7 in their bowl, 4-3 vs top 25. Improved UM's offense from #115 to #69 to #58.

as a HC in college: excluding San Diego: Harbaugh 49-27
10-10 vs top 25 at Stan/UM

Mac: 2 SECC appearances and a shiny outback bowl ring. Offense declined from #96 to #112 to #116.

41-24 3-9 vs top 25 CSU/UF.

Harbaugh couldn't score more than 14 points, we scored 30.

Harbaugh couldn't hold Iowa under 14, they scored 3 against us.

Herp derp derp.
