SC's win over Tenn: Game Thoughts

We just beat our first ranked team in 2 years. Last one was the W vs UGA in Sept of 2014. SC has won 33% more games than last year, which is a solid improvement.
Bentley is the truth. He's the best QB we have. We figured that out last week. It was again validated this week. He played incredibly smart for a FR. He protected the ball, didn't take needless sacks, he made plays with his feet, he completed 75% of his passes, he threw TD's and he sustained drives.
Dowdle is the best RB we have (I do feel a little vindicated b/c I called this preseason.) He makes Turner and Williams better, they are coming in fresh and working hard for playing time. This is what we need in the run game; competition and speed.
The OL didn't play awesome, but they had their best game of the season tonight. We opened a lot of wholes in the run game. We didn't have a lot of holding penalties. Pass protection was marginal to decent, but Bentley also helped by not holding the ball for more than 3 seconds.
Samuel got open a lot. The other WR's weren't really getting separated. Hurst dropped too many balls, but Crosby came up huge with the TD.
I thought our offensive play calling was pretty good. We thought we could run better than pass, and we did just that. We mixed up play calling on similar situations. I think we should've gone for more yards to close out the 1st half to see if we could get a field goal though.
Special teams was much improved, except for the botched kickoff where we let Berry Kick6 us. Otherwise as a unit they did well on punts and kicks.
THAT DEFENSE! Wow, it doesn't look anywhere close to what we had last year, and that's GREAT to see. This defense is already playing at a level that will help us contend for the division. Hindsight is 20/20, but I wonder if Bentley had been ready to go Game1, would we have won a couple more games?
Lammons is a tough dude, but has to chill that shite if it's going to get him thrown out. The guys who stepped in for him did really well though. DJ Smith's targeting penalty was bullshite, he shouldn't have been ejected.
We need to make a GIF of Deebo's one-handed catch in the first half. I'm going to play that clip all year.

Have fun with this Knox News blowhard, Gamecocks

Long-term, South Carolina’s decline should make life one-game easier for Tennessee in the SEC East."

Blatant hold that didn't get called imo
I really hope we ditch the McIlwain package and just let Bentley run those plays. He has proven that not only is he capable of running the ball, he can run the ball better than McIlwain and it doesn't telegraph the fact that we are gonna run the zone read by bringing McIlwain in

Huge victory for our program. Nuff said. Beat Missery next and all that stands in our way of us and a bowl game is Western Carolina and Clemsux. We should be able to win at least 2 out of those 3 :P. Seriously, this shot of hope is just what every Gamecock needed.

Yes. blatant, block in the back, hold, or hold in the back whatever you want to call it. They ref was blind on that one. And I agree that I think we have seen the last of the BMac packages for a while. There is no way for him to get in a rhythm. Hopefully they aren't doing too much with BMac and first team reps. It's time everyone else get's treated like the back up. Champ has his QB. He didn't get to have one at UF and now that he has him he will play him full go.

Just stopping by to say Congrats on the big win!
USC is my favorite SEC East team. I got the opportunity to visit Williams-Brice this year. Had a great time and really enjoyed the tailgating and the hospitality of your fans. Looking forward to y'all laying a beatdown on Mizzou and Western Carolina and the eventual bowl game (knock on wood). The Gamecocks are probably the last chance of a Clemson loss too. Wouldn't that be something?

My first thought, Bentley is going to be a star. To me, he's got Garcia's talent with Shaw's head on his shoulders. If we can get our OL shored up and keep some talent around him, he'll end up being possibly the best qb we've ever had.
I was extremely impressed with our defensive effort as well. Far better than the UMass game. Our secondary was expected to be our weak link before the year, and frankly they may be the strength right now. King has improved so much from the first two games it's hard to believe it's the same guy. I'm very excited about our future.
I'm excited to see how we finish this year. After 8 games, I wasn't sure a bowl game was still going to be a real possibility. I think Muschamp has done as well as anyone could have so far in his first year.

It would indeed. I will be at ClemTech in Pickens for the game. One of the best games I have ever seen in my life was the wide left game where that baby faced kicker Jad Dean missed a chip shot. I was sitting right on the 25, opposite the Carolina section and lost it.
I think I prayed every down of that second half. But I would love a similar win in dramatic fashion to ruin the hopes and dreams of all in orange, including my family haha

That was my first @Clemson game. 2006. I sat in the fricking sky on the Clemson side

I think that might have been my first one as well. I'd have to ask my folks

There used to be a video on youtube with a clip of that epic miss and Beyonce's "To the Left" song was the background music. Can't find it now but I remember torturing some taters with that video.

I remember that same one. I loved that video.

Can anybody find the stat for total sacks by Tennessee? Just curious but it felt like there were at least 15 - 20.
Posted on 11/1/16 at 12:08 pm to Mootsman
There were 6 total sacks.
You want to know the crazy part?
1) 5 of those 6 were due to blitzing
2) Derek Barnett beat Mason Zandi ONCE for a sack
I gotta say, the OL play in that game was well above where we have seen it.
Edit: I thought I should put this in here, Barnett did have multiple sacks, they just weren't all against Zandi. Also, I got the Zandi stat from the Locked on the Gamecocks podcast which I HIGHLY recommend. Completely free, on iTunes and Play Store.
