A bad coaching hire in the early 90s is not close to giving a guy in 2012 the keys to the entire athletic program (which is worth millions of dollars) with literally NO experience

In 2012 with where college athletics is
And what college athletics Is
Tanner was and is far worse
Also wasn’t Dixon the AD when we got asked to join the SEC?
And just kind of forced into it to do damage control or something?

I just can't wrap my head around the buyout clause. Do you think the agent lobbied for it, like stuck it in and wait to see if they'd bite? Or did Tanner have it drawn up and thought it was reasonable. Who in the actual fawk was he worried about coming calling?

Of course he did , and his agent is Jimmy Sexton who’s believed to be the best in the business (among CFB coaches agents)
He was also able to get Jimbo and Gus all that money too, as well as reps Saban
Any type of contract negotiations I would assume go through the agent and I think this is one thing where Tanner’s lack of experience comes in
One thing I did see was very weird:
He was signed by Florida after many years as a successful DC
5 year contract making him $2.75mm a year. Pretty average but whatever it’s 2011 not nearly as crazy (but still crazy) as it is today. Goes 7-6 that first year, gets an extension but 0 raise. Next year goes 11-1, has a share of the East and makes the sugar bowl (gets smoked in that game) but has a very good season so then give him another one year extension and he gets a 250k raise. Next year 4-8, no extension no raise. Following year 6-5 and gets fired. His buyout is $6.8mm
South Carolina then hires him in 2015. We give him a little over 3mm for 5 years. First year goes 6-7, extension. Then wins 9 games (and IMO a weak 9) and gets a $1mm raise
How come we are throwing more money at this guy than a program like Florida
Jimmy Sexton probably just came in with the highest offers and Tanner said “sure”

I agree they pulled a fast one on Ray which is another reason why he needs to step down.

So Eddie Floyd, one of IF not the most powerful BOT, is wanting Brad Edwards as AD.

I would like that
He has experience, although maybe would want someone with experience at a school with football.
Not like we are stealing from a P5 program but even a G5 football school
But rooster said he had some baggage that wasn’t answered, what did he do?

I have nothing but great memories of brad edwards.
If he doesnt take the job I will always have great memories.
If he takes the job and fails in will want his arse gone.
You cant ever take the 2 trophies from ray and I respect him as coach tanner.
But I loathe him as a.d.

I don't want to hire a guy because he was a great player for us. Brad does have experience as a AD but with small school only.

TBS has a fluff piece about Tanner
Ray Tanner is South Carolina's rising tide
At first I thought it was funny, but now I think it's pathetic. It's also concerning because Tanner might be more difficult to get rid of than I thought.

The South Carolina athletics department, under Tanner’s direction, has never been healthier than it is right now.

The Muschamp hire, Tanner’s first football hire as athletics director, didn’t go as planned. His top two targets, Tom Herman and Kirby Smart, ended up taking jobs at college football powerhouses before leaving Tanner with Muschamp and several other secondary targets to choose from. Muschamp promised sweeping changes and that he learned valuable lessons from his tenure at Florida, but those didn’t come to fruition as he hired multiple recycled staff members, including a failed offensive coordinator who ran a failed offense with the Gators.
Tanner did, however, oversee the start of the sand volleyball program

Well sand volleyball is reason enough to give Tanner an extension. I loved playing sand volleyball inside the Red Square bar in Tijuana ( spent most of the games face down in the sand)

I wonder if Tanner actually has some shite on the school. No way were that stupid to hire him. That whole process was very peculiar

I've been highly critical of Ray Tanner for a couple years now, but he doesn't deserve what is happening with BOT members making it public they want another AD. BOT Flying in Brad Edwards & Chris Massaro for games behind his back is not necessary.Tanner deserves better than that

I don't think Brad Edwards would be a terrible hire, that said we need to go after a bigger name if we want to be serious. George Mason doesn't even have a football team, and to me, this smells like more "good ole' boy" crap that has gotten us in trouble so many times at this school. I don't know. Honestly, I think we need to reform the BoT, but that isn't going to happen. From an outsiders perspective, it just seems we need more people who actually care about the direction of the school, and not political appointees (essentially). We have some pretty successful alumni that should be on the BoT IMO (and no, I am not just talking about Moore).

While I agree, at this point I'm just excited to see they're making moves at all. Given, however, that it is OUR BoT we're talking about, I'm certain they will find a way to BoTch the hire.
