First of all, thank you for letting me join your board

I have interacted with many of you over the years and you're a good bunch of ppl over here.

Anyways, I need to post on here to ask you a question. It's a how would you feel, what would you do if this happened.

Okay, so school just started for my kids. I ask my son who he plays with/what did learned/new people who he met. The other day he said he played with this kid Bear. I said oh, that's unusual name. Didn't think to ask him if he knew his last name. Anyways, the next day he comes home with a class list. My wife at dinner says, did you play with that Bear Bryant kid again today? I said, excuse me and perked my eyebrow up like Joe Moorhead does. I asked her to repeat it and she said, Bear Bryant. Now I have a huge smile on my face, the laughing kind.

Well, tonight was meet the teacher. Unfortunately, Mr & Mrs Bryant we're not there to get a look - for judgement, which I can't lie about lol.

But yeah, I got to see where Bear Bryant sat in class.

#true story.

*why would someone do this?

*do you think it's Trashy?

*would you be cracking up the same way?

Fwiw I live in rural area in the "north". We do have people here who fly rebel flags as well. & Hopefully you all don't think I'm an idiot for posting this I swear I'm normalish

Yes, I mean I just read a girls name tag the other day at the store and her name was Ammonia. Parents shouldn't name their kids off of niche BS or after cleaning products... but here we are.

Yes it’s trashy but cmon now this is Bama you’re talking about.
All SEC fan bases (other than Vandy prob) are generally pretty similar but there’s just more of Bama because of their success. So I’m not trying to say we are a less trashy fan base I’m just saying there’s more of them so they stand out more.

If i had to name anything after my school it would be a dog.
Not a kid.

You’re right.
I know of a guy who named his kid first name William middle name Brice.

Not really the sharpest tool in the shed , also a complete fricking red neck.

I tried taking a picture of the placard on his desk, but I was too giddy and definitely didn't want to look like an idiot in front of the teacher or other parents.

Welcome to the board.

People have been naming their kids after people they admire for centuries. I went to HS with a kid named Robert Edward Lee and one named Thomas Jonathan Jackson. A guy in my fraternity at SC (Phi Delt) was named James Longstreet Spring. If I had had as many Sons by my first wife as I had daughters I would have named my first Son after my Dad and me and called him Trey, and would have named my second son Rhett Brick (and then my last name.) Ironically, my current and last wife is a Butler, from the old SC Charleston Butler clan of Rhett Butler fame, and we named our Son Butler (middle name) and his first name is the same as my Dad's.

We're an old school Southern Scotch-Irish family who's people settled in this state in the late 17th Century and early 18th Century.

Conversely, one of my good friends is an OBGYN, a John's Hopkins grad, and he always marvels and tells us when we're out to dinner what different names are given to babies he brings into this world. He says they are all over the place but when the football teams are winning it is not unusual for parents to name boys Stephen Orr or William Christopher.

I know there had to be a bunch of boys named Bear Bryant or Paul William in Alabama because I've known more than a few Bama boys named Bear over the years including serving with one at Bragg.

It's not unusual in The South. Football coaches and Confederate Generals are held in high regard by old Southern families ... and for the same reason.

I've got family in both Texas and Tennessee. You'd be amazed at the number of Generals there are in Tennessee and how many Royals there are in Texas.

So your family was Irish and they drank Scotch?

Real southern custom is naming your kids according to family names like Boone Patterson Lincoln and then adding numbers to offspring so by now you may have a Boone Patterson Lincoln IV.

I think my cousin and John Y jr were Phi Delt brothers at UK together and should be close to your age. To be fair, I think it was the Phi Delts or Coo Birds @ Miami that got drunk and started digging a hole in their backyard and 2 weeks later it had gotten so big they decided to make a swimming pool from the original hole. I know it was not the Beta's as back then I think they were the inspiration for these guys a few decades later.
