So, and I ask this for a reason ... was there something said during Monday's bowl game broadcast by the ESPN announcers about our Civil War history in this state and our need to have two black coordinators to make things right or something?

I was VERY hungover, hadn't slept, so it could have been me thinking different/or not hearing correctly.

But they did say we were one of very few teams in the nation with multiple black coordinators/coaches. They praised it saying it was very progressive for our school, with the history that the state has had.

The way I heard it, I actually thought it was a positive spin for recruiting and that's the way they talked about it.

I understand people don't like when South Carolina's history is brought up (and I think that's why the guy was pissed to be honest), but the way they talked about it, It seemed positive to me and how it could help in our recruiting process

It was a topic of discussion by the group sitting behind us at the basketball game and I couldn't quite get all of it. I know one of the guys and I turned to ask him about it but he was so pissed about it that he just said he was too pissed about it to talk about it but that we were feeling pressure to name BMac OC because of the racial component and what the ESPN announcers had stirred-up ... fearful that it could be used against us in recruiting thanks to ESPN.

I came away so confused. Someone help me out here. I have not had time to watch the DVR'd game yet. What point in the broadcast did it happen?

The ESPN commentators started rambling on about how SC was a slave state and we started the Civil War, which segued into racism and how we were one of three teams with two black coordinators. They implied that we have black coaches for some kind of reparation. It was major bullshite.

The comments came sometime in the 3rd quarter, I think.

I saw somewhere that it was mentioned but when I watch football I watch the game. The broadcasters might as well not even be there so I didn't personally hear it.

I think BMac will make a fine OC btw. He's a smart guy and has earned the chance IMHO. Helluva recruiter, loyal to us and Boom, well-liked by his players.

To your and JM's point, BMac ran Roper's scheme better than Roper, with more tempo and made VERY good half time adjustments. He is a smart guy that will take the advice of the guys around him. Ppl on tos are complaining that we didn't get Briles or a guy who could "innovate". F that. BMac has shown that he can use what he already knows about the scheme that was in place and improve upon it. We don't necessarily need someone to reinvent the wheel, just one that can dial up plays when their needed. Something that I've mentioned ad nauseam on 247 was the fact that Don Brown has been calling Defenses longer than BMac has been alive and has done a good enough job at it to be the 2nd highest paid coach to do so.

This is all veey heady, very strategic, stuff. This is 3D chess with our staff. mUSChamp is reaching out for a lot of advice which is normally out of his wheelhouse.

If we can use the past relationship to get Travis Jones as our DL Coach, I'd seriously cream my pants. Lance is a guy that moves around. He's always done it, from his resume. Jones was Muschamp/Saban's DL coach when they won the Natty at LSU, went with them to the Dolphins as DL coach, and has 2 Superbowl Rings as a DL coach with the Saints and Seahawks. Lance has done a great job, but that rap sheet recruits itself. Again, this is a name that has been mentioned, no word yet on how likely it is to happen.

I don't know, maybe I need to watch it again, but their comments seemed backhanded

I think anyone from SC would feel that so I'm a bit biased?

I'm from NC so I didn't?

The way they sounded to me as if being one of only 3 schools with more than one black Coordinator is a recruiting advantage.

Well damn ... lol. ESPN is so fricked-up.

I can see where it might be viewed both ways I guess. Evidently we're going to try to spin it in a positive manner, especially on the recruiting trail.

The key now is for T-Rob and BMac to make the most of it because ... now it is up to them to erase the racial aspect and make it all about performance, achievement and success.

Interesting how we've immediately got two different takes from you two ... damn interesting. Thanks to both of you for the replies.

So, we're going to have two black coordinators. Wanna know the truth .... until I heard the discussion about it last night at the basketball game and what ESPN made a big deal about ... the thought never crossed my mind that T-Rob and BMac were black. Seriously, they are just good coaches.

None of us look at them and label them "black" coaches and lower our expectations because of their skin color.

ESPN is so full of shite.

Were the announcers black guys or something ... or just more white guilt asshats?

as we should.

It definitely is a HUGE positive in my opinon.

I actually had no idea that we were one of only 3 schools with 2 black coordinators.

I actually find that kinda shocking, especially with the amount of young coaches in the sport today and all the FBS schools out there.
And def with the money now, kids don't always go pro so now going the GA route is actually a good way to end up with a nice chunk of change at the end of the day.

Not sure about the other guy but the main Play by Play guy was Adam Amin (an indian guy)

Agreed. Didn't Clemmy Neg us on the trail about never playing a black QB?

Agreed and no one thinks it's a big deal except ESPN. It was just so odd for them to make those comments during a game. ESPN can't help themselves being political and bringing race up any chance they get

I've heard that before. Their fans definitely like to bring it up.

As for the ESPN comments, I can see why it comes off as unnecessary and annoying to bring up the Civil War during a football game, but I think it was ultimately complimentary to USC for having two black coordinators, which is rare in CFB.

Mixed in with Frank Martin's comments during the NCAA tournament about how USC is actually ahead of the curve in terms of racial relations, it definitely isn't something Clemson or others could use against us on the recruiting trail.

When was this in the 80s?

We had Anthony Wright for how many years as a starter

It was used against Spurrier since he had never had a black quarterback at Florida, not South Carolina as a whole.

WE still recruited and played him!!!

I always used to switch him to be the starter in NCAA because he could run.

Good. Needed to get this done and not linger. Time to get someone in place to plan for spring practices, recruiting, and such.
