The list is in alphabetical order.

Returnees who need to contribute

quote:

1. RHP Evan Beal: A junior, Beal is still viewed by most professional scouts as the best arm on South Carolina’s team. The problem is, he has been up and down during his first two years on campus sometimes being masterful and other times giving up too many walks and hits. As a freshman, the Lorton, Va. native marked his arrival picking up a victory against Clemson when he struck out five in four innings of work. He retired the first nine hitters he faced in the game.

There were outings his first year on campus where he was hit hard though and finished the year with a 4-4 record and 3.81 earned run average. Opponents hit just .220 against him but he needed to display more consistency as a sophomore. He didn’t. There were dominant games - like the 6.1 innings with 10 strikeouts and a win against Missouri. And not-so-good games, like his starts against Arkansas and Tennessee.

With a 90 mph fastball and mid-80s breaking pitches, much more is expected from Beal. He had a good summer in the Cape Cod League for Cotuit serving primarily as a starting pitcher. He’s likely to start the season in a relief role but he’s going to have to pitch critical innings this season for South Carolina and perform more consistently in 2014 than he did his first two years on campus.

quote:

2. RHP/1B Curt Britt: Now a sophomore, Britt was a centerpiece of the 2012 recruiting class. At one point, he was ranked as a top 20 recruit in the country and was recruited to make an immediate impact both on the mound and at the plate. Last season though, Britt didn’t factor much into the season once SEC play started.

Britt had early success on the mound against Albany and earned a save but his next appearance, a start against Ball State, left a lot to be desired from the coaches’ standpoint. He showed some promise in a relief appearance against Arkansas but never could quite take the next step on the mound. He did suffer through some arm troubles throughout the middle of the season and then injured his right hand during the Georgia series, which is an injury that reoccurred over the summer requiring surgery.

The Laurinburg, N.C. native never really received much of a chance at the plate but didn’t do much in his opportunities either. In his nine at-bats, he managed only two hits - a pair of singles - but also struck out five times, which included an 0-for-4 performance with three strikeouts against Arkansas.

Rebounding from his summer injury this season, Britt is focused primarily on making an impact on the mound. There are other options at first base and designated hitter for the time being and Britt will try to regain the form that saw him become a highly sought after prospect with offers from North Carolina, Clemson and a host of others.

quote:

3. LHP/1B Kyle Martin: The power-hitting lefty had a pretty good year in 2013 but didn’t have a whole lot of opportunities in the field early in the year. Playing behind first baseman LB Dantzler, the Wade Hampton High School product was relegated mainly to a designated hitter role with a few spot starts on the infield.

While it isn’t like Martin had a bad season a year ago, more will be expected from him in 2014. He will take over at first base - as he did during the postseason - and is expected to provide a better defensive ability than his predecessor. The offensive numbers will be hard to match as Dantzler led the team in batting average (.322), home runs (15), RBIs (53) and four other offensive categories.

Martin finished the 2013 season hitting .288 with two doubles and two home runs in 88 at-bats. He will need quite a few more extra-base hits than he had and drive in more runs (10 RBIs) than he had to make for a successful season. Martin does have a good eye for a hitter with so much power potential walking 10 times while striking out 11 but head coach Chad Holbrook would be satisfied with a strikeout to walk ratio that’s more skewed as long as there are more home runs.

quote:

4. 2B Max Schrock: Like Martin, the Chapel Hill, N.C. native didn’t have a bad season his first year on campus for the Gamecocks. Schrock, however, has All-American talent and finished seventh on the team in batting average. He should finish easily in the top three on this team in that category and it wouldn’t be surprising at all if he finished as the team leader.

Schrock hit .288 a year ago with nine doubles and six home runs while chipping in 39 RBIs. He walked 36 times and struck out only 23, which are numbers that are sterling for a freshman. He saw his batting average drop to .212 following the Texas A&M series on March 30. Once the calendar turned April, Schrock hit .336 over the final 34 games of the season.

Schrock will look to put together a complete season in 2014, which could see him hit for an average much higher than .336. He should also challenge for the team lead in home runs and RBIs.

quote:

5. RHP Joel Seddon: Now a junior, Seddon entered as the most highly regarded pitcher nationally in the 2011 class. His first year on campus, the right-hander bounced back and forth between a starting and relief role and couldn’t quite find his niche on the 2012 team. He appeared in nine games with three starts posting a 2-0 record and a 2.75 earned run average. His best outings came as a starter but there wasn’t really an open spot in that role for most of the season. Seddon struggled out of the bullpen.

Last season, Seddon posted a 4.50 earned run average in 11 games with nine of those appearances coming in relief. He walked nine hitters in his 18.0 innings pitched and, again, just couldn’t quite find a role.

This year though, Seddon is going to have to find his place and pitch valuable innings. He had great success over the summer in the Cape Cod League bridging the gap from the starting pitcher to the set-up man and closer. He pitched the middle innings, much like Adam Westmoreland did a year ago for the Gamecocks. Maybe that’s where he will find success for South Carolina this year but Seddon, maybe moreso than any other returning player, will need to contribute more in 2014.

College Baseball Daily & Perfect Game both have SC predicted to win the East. Can't say I blame them with the schedule we have at the moment. Plus all the talent on this team.

CBD:

quote:

2013 record: 43-20 (17-12)
Finish: Super Regionals (eliminated by North Carolina)

Despite head coach Ray Tanner stepping down from head coach to become athletic director, South Carolina didn’t miss a beat in 2013. Chad Holbrook stepped in and led the Gamecocks to the Super Regionals, although they missed going to Omaha (and championship series) for the first time since 2009. The current model program in the SEC with back-to-back NCAA titles in 2010/2011 and many other College World Series appearances, it’s Omaha or bust just about every season and 2014 will be no different.

Replacing 1st baseman LB Dantzler’s power (15 HR, .617 SLG) and eye at the plate (.444 OBP) will be a challenge, but the Gamecocks brought in the #11 recruiting class and will look to shortstop Joey Pankake to lead the way offensively. As always, this group will be right in the middle of the SEC title race and has a great chance at getting back to Omaha.

Four Best Baseball Series

The series are listed in alphabetical order.

quote:

1. at Arkansas: The Razorbacks don’t enter the season ranked as highly as in recent history but they’re still going to have a say in the SEC race this season. Plus, Baum Stadium is one of the nicest but most hostile places the league has to offer. Carolina Stadium was designed with a lot of the features as Baum but in Fayetteville, the outfield seating is all grass and coolers are allowed into the stadium creating a raucous and unique college atmosphere.

Arkansas has some talent as well, including first-team All-American outfielder Brian Anderson, who hit .325 last season with four home runs and 36 RBIs. He had 22 multi-hit games and also appeared on SportsCenter’s Top Plays.

After winning two of three games at Baum Stadium a year ago, the Gamecocks were swept at home last season. The Razorbacks hold a 34-28 record overall but South Carolina has won three of the last four series and taken five of the last six in Fayetteville.

The series will begin on Thursday, April 3 and will be part of the ESPNU package, so the nation will have the opportunity to see Gamecocks. It’s also the fourth conference series of the season, so South Carolina will have a pretty good feel for how it matches up in the conference after the weekend.

quote:

2. Clemson: Regardless of where each team projects nationally, the rivalry will always be one of the best series of the year. The format of the series - a home game for each school and a neutral site game - has worked well since its inception and Greenville seems to be the permanent resting spot for the Saturday game.

South Carolina has not lost the season series since 2006 when Clemson won the four-game series 3-1. The Gamecocks have swung the series in its favor considerably over the last decade and Clemson head coach Jack Leggett now has a losing record all-time against South Carolina 38-48 with a 35-40 mark while at Clemson and 3-8 mark while at Western Carolina.

There will be some added spice to the rivalry this season because of what has transpired in recruiting since the teams last met. South Carolina swiped a former Clemson commitment, current freshman left-handed pitcher John Parke, while the Tigers countered by signing class of 2014 outfielder K.J. Bryant. Of course, what happens on the recruiting trail doesn’t trump the desire to hold state bragging rights.

Connor Bright
Against Clemson last year, right fielder Connor Bright was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs

The Clemson series will be South Carolina’s first true test of the season with three-game series against Bucknell and Eastern Kentucky plus a single game against Presbyterian starting the year. The Friday night starting pitching matchup between South Carolina’s Jordan Montgomery and Daniel Gossett from Clemson will be special.

quote:

3. at Kentucky: The Wildcats had a miserable season in 2013 falling woefully short of expectations. Kentucky was a trendy pick to win the SEC East by some but failed to even make the NCAA Tournament after going one-and-done in the SEC Tournament.

South Carolina played a big role in the failings of Kentucky a season ago as the Gamecocks swept the series at Carolina Stadium. The last trip to Lexington, Ky. though, the Wildcats were the ones doing the sweeping. It was the first conference series of the 2012 season and Kentucky, which went on to have a great year, wasn’t considered among the league’s elite. South Carolina dropped two games 4-3 and the Sunday series finale 6-3 to start a stretch of six losses in eight games.

The Wildcats have two preseason All-Americans - outfielder Austin Cousino and DH/LHP A.J. Reed - highlighting a roster that lost the bulk of its pitching staff from a year ago. Cousino really struggled offensively last season but performed well for Team USA and is looking for a rebound season. Reed is one of the top two-way players in the country as a power hitter and late-game reliever.

South Carolina holds an overall series record for 44-32 but will look to return home from Lexington, Ky. with better memories than two seasons ago. It is the second conference series of the year for the Gamecocks against a team that could end up among the top three in the SEC East this season.

quote:

4. at Vanderbilt: The series against the Commodores is the best the Gamecocks have in the conference this year and it just so happens to fall on the final weekend of the regular season. The Thursday-through-Saturday series is likely to determine who wins the SEC East and earns one of the top two seeds in the conference tournament.

Vanderbilt always has one of the best pitching staffs in the country and this year, features two preseason All-Americans with starting pitcher Tyler Beede leading the way followed by reliever Brian Miller. The Commodores lost a half dozen conference star players, including utility man Tony Kemp, LHP Kevin Ziomek, power hitter Conrad Gregor and others.

A year ago, the Commodores won an SEC record 26 conference games, which bested a mark held by South Carolina when the team went 25-5 in 2000. Head coach Tim Corbin’s team bowed out before making it to the College World Series though losing the best-of-three Super Regional to Louisville at home.

The Gamecocks hold an edge in the series 49-26 but the Commodores have won seven of the last 10 games. The last time the series was played in Nashville, South Carolina did come away with a 2-1 series victory, including a 6-4 win in a 13-inning Sunday rubber match.

Who will be the Sunday Guy?

quote:

“There are questions I ask myself daily and I don’t know if I have the right answer,” second-year head coach Chad Holbrook told TheBigSpur.com.

Right-hander Wil Crowe and lefty Josh Reagan currently have a leg up on the competition, which has no shortage of players who want the job.

Crowe was ranked as the No. 58 player in the country by Perfect Game and the third-best player in Tennessee.

“Wil Crowe is going to factor in somewhere,” Holbrook said. “Is he going to factor in as a weekend starter or in a prominent role in the bullpen? That’s a question we’re going to have to answer.”

“Josh Reagan may have been our most consistent pitcher in the fall,” Holbrook said. “How are we going to use him? “Those are two guys, if you look at their numbers with their consistency and how they’ve pitched, they’ll factor in to a starting spot or a prominent role in the bullpen.”

“We’re going to have freshmen in a prominent roles,” Holbrook said. “We don’t have a choice. There’s no hesitancy. Would we like for them to have some experience? Sure, but they’re going to have to learn on the go a little bit. The good news is, we have some older guys who can help.”

There are some older options as well. Junior Joel Seddon was the first player after his two freshmen who Holbrook noted as making a push for the starting role.

“Joel Seddon has some experience,” Holbrook said. “We love the way Joel is throwing in the bullpen right now.”

Holbrook also pointed to Evan Beal as an upperclassmen who could challenge for the starting spot. Beal was actually the starting pitcher for the opening game of SEC play a year ago when he beat Missouri. Last year, he posted a 2-1 record with 4.78 ERA in 13 appearances, which included five starts.

Coach Holbrook Ready for Year 2

quote:

After serving 19 years as an assistant coach at South Carolina and North Carolina, Holbrook got his chance to lead his own program when Ray Tanner stepped down to become athletics director. Even though he had so many years of sitting in the dugout as the number two, everything is more difficult being number one.

“I hope I’m a year wiser and a year better,” Holbrook told TheBigSpur.com. “I learned a lot last year and I hope that makes me make some better decisions in Year 2. At the end of the day though, it comes down to our players. We have some good ones and we need to put them out there in the best position to help us win and perform at the level they’re capable of performing.”

Holbrook has been the top assistant in two of college baseball’s top programs - South Carolina and North Carolina - and learned from two coaching greats - Tanner and Mike Fox.

“You think about this decision or that decision, this personnel move and how would I handle it now,” Holbrook said. “You sit in bed thinking and that’s just part of coaching, whether you’re in your first year or 31st year. There are things in my mind I wish I had back but I can assure you those things that bother me, I’ll go the right way in Year 2.”

Holbrook said there was only one move that he really wanted back from the 2013 season.

In Game 3 of the Super Regional at North Carolina, the Gamecocks put the first two runners of the game on base to lead off the game with Graham Saiko singling and Chase Vergason being hit by a pitch by UNC starting pitcher Benton Moss, who had struggled his previous outings.

Holbrook stated the day before the game that it was important for his team to get a lead and held that same mindset once the first pitch was thrown. He elected to sacrifice bunt three-hole hitter Joey Pankake, who pushed the ball right back to the mound. Saiko was cut down at third base and the Gamecocks didn’t get a run in the inning.

“That’s the one I want back. We had a chance to open up the game, but I wanted to score first,” Holbrook said. “That’s the baseball decision that bothers me the most; I wish I had let our best hitter hit there and not get caught up in the moment as far as getting ahead in the game. I should have let our best player do what he does best.

“That’s the one strategic decision I want back. Most of the other ones, I can sleep decent about.”

Holbrook said there were some travel roster decisions that he sometimes “scratches his head at” but those don’t bother him as much as the decision to take the bat out of Pankake’s hand.

“The thing I’m proud about with last year’s team is we had a lot of adversity thrown our way, we had a lot of injuries through the course of the year and we handled it,” Holbrook said. “We were scrambling. We righted the ship when things could have gone the other way and found a way to win 43 games when things didn’t look so good.”

“All in all, I’m proud of the season we had last year. I don’t like to call it a great season because we didn’t finish playing in the College World Series or win an SEC Championship, but it was a darn good season, considering all that happened to us.”

Greiner Irreplaceable

quote:

“He’s as close to irreplaceable as any player we’ve got,” second-year head coach Chad Holbrook said. “That position is an awfully important position and he’s awfully talented. He’s the heart and soul of our team in many ways.”

Greiner was recently named a second-team All-American by Perfect Game and spent the summer traveling with Team USA. He was the first choice at the catcher position for his defense and he put up strong offensive numbers throughout most of his time wearing the Stars & Stripes.

Known nationally for his defense, Greiner finished as the team’s third-leading hitter at .298 with 16 hits for extra bases, 38 RBIs and 24 walks against 28 strikeouts.

“My first two years, I counted on Dante and knew I was going to get a spell some games,” Greiner said. “As a captain, I want to be out there every game and help this team win. My mindset is to lead the team as far as I can and I think I’ve put my body in a good position to be able to catch the majority of the games.”

Holbrook insists that he is going to do everything he can to keep Greiner healthy throughout the 2014 season, which is going to mean giving him some days off. There will be some games where Greiner may be taken out in the later innings of games as well.

Asked if he thought Holbrook would let him catch every inning, Greiner laughed and responded, “No shot,” but the second-year coach knows he’s going to have to lean on his third-year starter.

“I wouldn’t trade Grayson Greiner for anybody,” Holbrook said. “He knows this program inside and out, handles our pitching staff. Our pitching staff is extremely confident throwing to him. They love throwing to Grayson. He’s a hard worker and tries to catch every bullpen on practice days. He has the ultimate respect of all of our players. That’s why he’s one of our captains.”

One of the captains, and as irreplaceable as any player in the college game.

Scrimmage Impressions from JW On Day 1:

quote:

Montgomery, overall, was very impressive pitching in game action for the first time since the Super Regional win against North Carolina. He looks like a different specimen physically and still has the same confidence about him. Lots of fastball from him today. Not hit hard at all.

Crowe was very impressive as well. He too threw predominately fastballs and has some nice run. He worked some quick innings facing a team full primarily of the starting lineup. He was so quick through the second inning that they kept him out on the mound to hit his pitch count. He faced a total of nine batters, struck out two and allowed one hit.

A couple of other pitchers who stood out to me today were juniors Joel Seddon and freshman Matt Vogel. Seddon was throwing his slider for a strike today and had some sharp break to it. He seemed to throw more breaking balls than some of the other guys.

Vogel threw fastball slider for the most part today and threw some good sliders. He’s going to have to continue to replicate what he’s doing and be consistent.

Looking at position players, the guy who stood out to me most today was freshman Matt Williams. He did good things offensively and defensively. Offensively, he’s been a guy who uses the opposite maybe too much but he did show the ability to turn on the ball tucking an RBI hit inside the first base bag. He also made a nice play at second base. Defensively, Williams looks very comfortable at a variety of positions. He made a nice play at second base today charging and made a difficult play look easy.

I also liked what I saw out of freshman Jordan Gore today both offensively and defensively. He made a nice play behind the bag at second base and turned a double play. Also had a couple of hits, an RBI and scored a run.

Back on the pitching front, junior Cody Mincey, who is the frontrunner for the closer’s role, got out of a jam in his first inning of work. He gave up an opposite field double to Grayson Greiner and then walked Connor Bright. He was the beneficiary of a borderline strike three call to Taylor Widener and then got the next two hitters in order to get out of the inning without allowing a run. Showed a little bit of poise and composure, which was good to see. What wasn’t good to see were the walks.

Injury Front:

quote:

Shortstop Marcus Mooney and centerfielder Tanner English collided on a pop fly in shallow center. Mooney hurt his jaw and English didn’t look the same the rest of the game either. Mooney ended up coming out of the game while English kept playing. I’m not sure the extent of either injury at this point but it’s something that I’ll ask about tomorrow.

Designated hitter Brison Celek also appeared to aggravate his back on a swing today, so that may be something to keep an eye on as well.

Yep, pretty much feel like I'm done watching out Basketball team this season. I think next year will be much better. I'm really looking forward to baseball to start and start washing away some of the off season disappointments.

Can't blame you. I'll probably still watch unless it conflicts with one of the baseball games in which I'll be at Carolina Stadium instead or watching it via stream/tv. But, you're right baseball can't get here soon enough.

2013 season records:

Bucknell: 16-33
Presbyterian: 24-32 (one mid-week game)
Eastern Kentucky: 23-34
Clemson: 40-22
Stetson: 26-31
Brown: 7-33
Furman: 32-25 (one mid-week game)

That's every team we play before our conference schedule begins with Ole Miss coming to Carolina Stadium on March 14th. Only Clemson and Furman had winning records last season, and we have owned Clemson in recent years. I actually expect the Clemson series to be a toss-up this season, but we could have a lot of wins by the time the Rebels come into town.

Don't know if we shouldn't have tougher competition than this before conference play begins, but it is what it is....

Scrimmage Impressions from Sunday

quote:

The star of the scrimmage on Sunday was junior Kyle Martin, who had a two-RBI single and a two-run home run in the game. The single came on a two-strike pitch, which was good to see him hitting down in the count. The home run towered to right field. Martin has been a much more aggressive swinger at the plate since he returned from summer ball, which is refreshing to see. Too often in the past he settled for going the other way. A guy his size needs to hit some home runs here at this stadium and now - since the start of the fall - he looks like he’s ready to accomplish that task.

Martin, again, also looked really good defensively. He made a run-saving play fielding a hard-hit shot to his left off the bat of Max Schrock. He hopped up quick and stepped on the bag. He also made another nice play to his left and scooped a throw in the dirt. South Carolina has been good at first base in recent years but not enough balls have been picked out of the dirt. I think Martin will prove to be better at that this year.

I thought sophomore DC Arendas made some nice passes at the baseball today. He didn’t have quite the results to show for it at the plate but thought he looked good. Also had a couple of nice plays defensively.

Senior Brison Celek had a good day at the plate. Looked locked in. Had a hit or two and a couple of walks. I think he starts off the year as the designated hitter and then see what happens from there. He was locked in for about a month last season and they rode him hard for that stretch. We’ll see how long he can hold up this year.

Junior Elliott Caldwell also had a good day at the plate. Shot a double the opposite way. He’s a competitor. He’ll grind for you. I like what he brings to the table. … I also thought that freshman Zack Madden has had some good swings the last couple of days. He had another double today. Also had a strikeout but he’s starting to put it together a little bit after a tough-luck fall.

From a pitching standpoint, I thought starters Josh Reagan and Curt Britt were both really good. Reagan picked up right where he left off in the fall. He threw three innings allowed one hit and struck out two. Nothing was hit overly hard off of him. Arendas served a single the opposite way. He got both of his strikeouts on inside fastballs to right-handed hitters. He froze Tanner English and Jae Roberts. Guess they weren’t expecting those pitches. Reagan doesn’t light up the radar gun but he knows how to pitch.

I thought Britt looked pretty good overall. His work has been limited due to offseason hand surgery but he threw some nice breaking balls. Fastball command wasn’t always there but I thought it was a good outing to build on going into the season given as long as he’s been away from the game.

Freshman Tyler Haswell jumped out at me today for the first time. He didn’t really do much for me in the fall, save a couple of outings, but his fastball seemed to have some life on it today.

Sophomore Jack Wynkoop was the last pitcher to throw. Originally, he wasn’t on the list to throw because of an off-field issue on Saturday. They decided to throw him for an inning extended at the end of the game and he looked sharp. Talent alone, as head coach Chad Holbrook said, he’s definitely a weekend starting pitcher. He may not start opening weekend though. I’ll have some quotes shortly but Holbrook wasn’t a happy camper with Wynkoop and a few other players, who remained nameless.
